Safety is one of the biggest challenges facing warehouse managers

Top 10 Challenges Facing Warehouse Managers

Challenge #1: Keeping Your Staff Safe:

pedestrian-safety.png

It is important for pedestrians and equipment operators to be aware of safety guidelines - Source: Global Industrial

The number one priority of a plant manager is to keep your staff safe and do all that you can to prevent injuries.

No one wants to see a worker injured. A worker who has been injured needs to be replaced, which means extra wages, training time, and possible downtime until the new person is ready.

Warehouses also have the difficult situation of forklifts and other material handling machinery and pedestrians moving around and working in close proximity.

Solution:

Encourage safe working practices among your employees. Provide training such as WHMIS and follow guidelines for handling hazardous materials.

You can also purchase forklift equipment that is ergonomically designed for the safety of your workers who are using it for long periods of time.

Make sure you also provide pedestrian awareness programs so that everyone is aware of the safe practices that need to be followed when people are walking around close to moving machinery.

Challenge #2: Reducing the Number and Severity of Accidents in Your Warehouse

Accidents are going to happen in your warehouse. One of the greatest challenges facing warehouse managers is reducing accidents and their severity.

This helps ensure that fewer injuries occur, less money is spent on covering damages caused by accidents, and less downtime is experienced due to accidents.

Solution:

Proper training on the safe operation of your material handling equipment can help to greatly reduce the number of accidents.

Providing incentives to employees for going "accident free," such as a bonus system could also be implemented.

Challenge #3: Optimizing Your Warehouse Space and Layout

Clean-warehouse-floor.png

Make the most of your warehouse layout

Another challenge facing warehouse managers is making the best and most efficient use of the warehouse space that you have.

This includes finding the optimum layout so that product can be moved and orders fulfilled in the least possible time.

Solution:

Managers need to enhance their "storage systems as well as racking and pallet patterns."

Pay special attention to your receiving areas to ensure that they have enough space for speedy deliveries.

You also may need to change the width of your aisles depending on the size and type of forklift equipment you use.

Challenge #4: Purchasing the Best Equipment

Selecting the best equipment that is ergonomically designed, has great safety features, is economical to purchase and operate, and will provide you with the most efficient operations is a real challenge.

Combine all this with the fact that you are probably on a very tight budget and you will have a very difficult task.

Solution:

Get advice on what your best choices are from a supplier that you can trust. For example, a propane forklift may be more cheaper to purchase up front, but a similar electric one will probably have a much lower total cost of ownership.

You can also ask for advice on the latest ergonomic devices and safety equipment such as lift tables, forklift spotter lights, bollard and guard rails. These devices installed in your facility can decrease the number and severity of any accidents.

Challenge #5: Accurately Controlling and Tracking Inventory

forklift.jpg

Accurately controlling and tracking inventory is another challenge

Another one of the big challenges facing warehouse managers is being able to accurately control and track your inventory.

Your product must always be placed in its designated location and be easy to identify. If information is manually being recorded, then there is a greater chance for mistakes, such as incorrect receipts and purchase orders.

Solution:

Implementing an online warehouse management software system can help to reduce these errors in inventory control. If you still must use manual tracking, then make sure that it is double-checked for accuracy.

Challenge #6: Making the Most of Your Product Picking Process

Time is of the essence in any warehouse system and, as a manager, you will be constantly faced with the pressure from customers to get their orders to them in the least amount of time possible. This is why optimizing your product picking is vital.

Solution:

Scanning SKU's or using an image capture instead of manually entering them will increase both accuracy and speed. Since pick paths account for 50% or more of your warehouse operations, create optimal ones so that product can be moved through your facility with the greatest efficiency.

Challenge #7: Dealing with Increasing and Decreasing Demand

Forklift_dealers[1].jpg

Consider renting equipment for your busier seasons

One of the trickiest challenges facing warehouse managers is dealing with fluctuations in demand. Different times of the year, the state of the economy, and even the weather can affect how busy your warehouse is.

Solution:

Use timely and accurate information to try and forecast what your future demand will be. Rent extra equipment for your known busier seasons instead of buying to save on capital costs.

Challenge #8: Controlling and Limiting Product Damages

As we have said before, accidents will happen and as a result, product will get damaged. This can become very expensive and really cut into your bottom line.

Solution:

Regularly inspect your pallets to make sure that there are no damaged parts that will make them unstable and break.

Train your employees on the proper way to load and wrap product. Install rack safety netting, pallet rack column protectors, steel guarding, etc. to protect both your product and your staff.

Challenge #9: Training

Another one of the constant challenges facing warehouse managers is to get your workforce properly trained for the jobs that they are doing.

Not only do you need to provide them with training to give them the particular skills they need to do their job, but also you need to provide them with general safety training.

Solution:

If you don't have the time or expertise to provide your staff with the safety training they require, you can hire professional trainers to do that for you.

Challenge #10: Knowing What Your Customers Want

80% of your profits will come from only 20% of your product

Most businesses work under the 80/20 rule or Pareto Principle, where 80% of your profits will come from only 20% of your product.

The challenge for the warehouse manager is to figure out what consumers are buying and ensuring your warehouse isn’t full of product that is just sitting there.

Solution:

Take a close look at the remaining 80% of your stock and try to determine what products are not in demand. You can get rid of the things that are not moving, and replace them with products that are in demand instead.

There are many challenges facing plant managers today

Challenges Facing Plant Managers

1. Reducing Accidents

Challenge: The fact is that accidents will happen in the workplace. One of the greatest challenges facing plant managers is reducing accidents so that fewer injuries occur, less money is spent on covering damages caused by accidents, and less downtime is experienced due to accidents.

Solution: If you don't have the time or expertise to provide your staff with the safety training they require, you can hire professional trainers to do that for you.

4. Staying on Top of Changes in Regulations

Challenge: It is important that as a plant manager, you stay on top of all of the latest regulations. The government is constantly updating and bringing out new regulations involving important issues such as:

Solution: Make sure you stay informed by checking government regulations frequently.

Plant managers need to keep up to date of government regulations

5. Having the Right Safety Equipment

Challenge: Having the right safety equipment will not only keep your employees safe and healthy, but it can also increase your productivity.

Using equipment that isn't ergonomically designed will increase the chances of worker injuries and downtime due to having to train replacement staff.

Solution: Having safety equipment such as lift tables, forklift spotter lights, bollards and guard rails installed in your facility can decrease the number and severity of any accidents.

6. Keeping Your Information Safe

Challenge: Another one of the challenges facing plant managers today is keeping your important information safe from cyber theft or hacking.

Every industry relies on computers to some extent and when you use the internet, you also run the risk of having your system tapped into or tampered with.

Solution: Make sure you have security measures in place to protect your sensitive data, such as installing firewalls, using complex passwords, having reliable antivirus software, and using encryption. It is also helpful to train your staff in safe computing practices.

Install safety equipment such as guardrails for extra protection

7. Team Building

Challenge: One of the difficult challenges facing plant managers is getting your staff to work as a team. Often, workers will decide to do things their own way. focusing on their own needs and objectives. The challenge is to get your staff to buy into the plant objectives and work together as a team.

Solution: Open communication and accountability are key to team building as well as making decisions as a management team and being consistent with carrying out your decisions. Sometimes it is even helpful to incorporate team-building workshops or training to bring your workforce together.

8. Maintaining Morale

Challenge: It is so important to maintain morale in your workplace. Low morale can result in lower productivity and quality of work, as well as a higher employee turnover rate.

Solution: Let your employees feel like their work is more than just a job. Take time to celebrate employee accomplishments in creative ways.

Give employees time off to pursue projects they are passionate about. Show them you actually care about them by doing things like recognizing their birthdays.

communication.jpg

Communication is key for effective team building

9. Being Pulled in Different Directions

Challenge: One of the very real challenges facing plant managers is feeling like they are being pulled in multiple directions and not having the time to lead effectively.

Solution: Be a leader, not a dictator. Learn to delegate tasks and help your employees take ownership of their tasks. Trust them to do the small things that you don't need to be doing.

Make your employees feel like they are part of achieving the goals of the company. Demonstrate your own commitment to these goals and encourage others to get on board.

10. Constantly Putting out Fires

Challenge: Often plant managers become “firefighters,” constantly putting out the same fires (solving the same problems over and over again).

Solution: If you are finding that you are always fixing the same problems, take the time to take a closer look at what is the actual cause of the problem. Then, try to put in place a system, procedure, or practice that will actually eliminate that problem so that it doesn't come up again.

The Ontario government has several laws or acts that relate to waste disposal and recycling that you need to be familiar with and follow. They include:

1. General - Waste Management: Environmental Protection Act

2. The Environmental Protection Act (EPA)

3. Waste Audit and Reduction Workplan Regulation

4. Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Source Separation Programs

5. The Environmental Assessment Act

6. The Planning Act

1. General - Waste Management: Environmental Protection Act R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 347

  • Dust suppressants

  • Processed organic waste

  • Used tires that have not been refurbished for road use

  • Refrigerant waste

  • Residue from an industrial, manufacturing or commercial process or operation

  • Construction site materials

  • Used lubricating oil, and many more.

3. Waste Audit and Reduction Work plan Regulations

The waste disposal regulations outlined in these next regulations deal with waste reduction work plans to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste.

When developing these work plans, reduction of waste is your first priority. If reduction is not possible, then reusing waste is your next priority, followed by recycling.

The Waste Audit and Reduction Work Plans outline regulations that specifically relate to:

  • Retail shopping establishments and shopping complexes

  • Large construction and demolition projects

  • Office buildings and restaurants

  • Hotels and motels

  • Hospitals and educational institutions

  • Large manufacturing establishments

  • Aluminum

  • Cardboard (corrugated)

  • Fine paper

  • Glass

  • Newsprint

  • Polyethylene (high density) jugs, pails, crates, totes and drums and (linear low density and low density) film

  • Polystyrene (expanded) foam, trays, reels and spools

Total Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric

Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric: Even though a propane forklift is cheaper to purchase than an electric one, the electric model will end up costing you much less over the time that you own it. Find out why.

The following comparison chart shows you how an electric forklift can cost you much less than a propane one over time.

Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric

ic forklift operating costs2.png
electric forklift operating costs.png

In our Total Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric article, we'll break down the total cost of purchasing and maintaining these two types of forklifts.

We have over 40 years in the forklift business, and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you so that you get the perfect forklift for your needs.

In our Total Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric article, will show you how even though a propane forklift is cheaper to purchase than an electric one, the electric model will end up costing you much less over the time that you own it. Let's show you why.

Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric

Electric forklifts have a much lower total cost of ownership than their propane counterparts. Let's take a closer look at the above example to prove our point.

Propane (LPG) forklifts have an internal combustion (IC) engine and will cost you much less to purchase new than a comparable electric one.

In our chart above, Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric, the New Komatsu IC FG25ST (LPG) costs $23,000 to purchase where the New Komatsu Electric FB25SH cost $34,000 to purchase.

That's $11,000 more. However, the electric forklift will actually cost you $7,120 less to own and operate after only 5 years. How can that be?

Here's why.

Komatsu-FH45-Series-Pic-1.png

An electric forklift will have a lower cost of ownership than a propane one

Electric Forklifts Cost Much Less to Operate

When you factor in both maintenance and fuel costs that you will incur over the time that you own your forklift, an electric one will actually cost you less.

Maintenance Costs

You will spend much less in maintenance costs for your electric forklift over a comparable propane model. We do the math below to show you how this is possible!

LPG Fuel (liquid petroleum gas):

On average, a propane forklift will cost you about $1.15 per hour that it’s in service to keep it properly maintained. Therefore, in our example where our forklifts are used for 120 hours per month, the cost to maintain the propane forklift would be about $138.

120 hours in service x $1.15 maintenance cost per hour = $138
per month

Electric Forklift:

On average, an electric forklift will cost about $0.90 per hour that it’s used to keep it properly maintained. So, if we look again at our example electric forklift that is used for 120 in a month, the total cost to maintain it would be $108.

120 hours in service x $0.90 maintenance cost per hour = $108
per month

fuel-maintenance-costs2.png

An electric forklift will have lower monthly fuel and maintenance costs

Fuel Costs

You will spend much less in fuel costs for your electric forklift over a similar propane one. Let's take another look at our above example to discover why.

LPG Fuel (liquid petroleum gas):

Petroleum costs about $2.00 per gallon to purchase (prices fluctuate - for the current average price per city in Canada, click here).

Our propane forklift in the above example has an 8 gallon tank. After 120 hours of operation in a month, this forklift will go through about 20 tanks per month. Each tank of fuel will cost $16.00, so the total cost of fuel for this forklift will be $320.

20 tanks x $16.00 per tank = $320.00

Electric Battery: An average electric forklift battery will use 4 Kilowatts to charge it after each hour it is used.

The average cost of electricity is about $0.10 per Kilowatt hour. This forklift is used for 120 hours in one month. Therefore the cost to charge its batter each month would be about $48.00.

120 hours x 4 Kilowatts x $0.10 = $48.00

Therefore, your fuel costs to run an electric forklift will be about $272 less every month.

total-monthly-expense2.png

The above graph shows total maintenance, fuel and purchase price costs per month

Total Monthly Expenses

As you can see from the above graph and following chart, the electric forklift costs much less, $302 less, to operate per month than the propane unit.

Even when you factor in the higher purchase price of the electric unit, spread over 60 months, the electric forklift will still cost you $118.66 per month less than the propane one.

Spread over the entire 60 months of ownership, your savings will be an incredible $7,120. If you own your forklift longer than 60 months, your savings will be even greater!

Importance of Food Process Safety

If you are in the food business in Canada, it is important that you understand the proper and safe way to handle food.

Whether your are a large or small food business, you and your employees need to understand and be properly trained on regulations and safe practices.

This includes practices involving importing, exporting, manufacturing, processing, treating, preserving, grading, packaging, or labeling food so that it is not compromised.

It Is a Legal Requirement: The Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) became law in Canada in November of 2012, and fully came into force on January 15, 2019 when it was adopted.

The SFCR is a consolidation of 14 separate sets of existing food regulations. By combining them into one, the government hopes to have more consistency in its rules. As a food business, you are legally required to follow these regulations.

It Can Help Prevent Food-borne Illness Outbreaks: The main goal of food process safety is to keep consumers safe and decrease the number of food-borne illness outbreaks.

It Can Help Build Public Trust: If your business is following these regulations, your customers will feel more confident and will trust you and your products. Consumer confidence is always good for business.

It Can Help Prevent Costly Recalls: Food process safety not only keeps the population safe but it can also save your business a lot of money. Recalls are costly and they are often hard to recover from.

Safely handling food can cut down on the number of food-borne illnesses

Food Process Safety Guidelines and Summary

The SFCR outlines a general set of requirements that applies to a wide range of different foods. You can access those regulations here.

Some food categories have very specific guidelines and are discussed in separate segments of the SFCR. These include:

Dairy Products:

The guide gives you rules regarding raw milk or raw cream used to prepare dairy products. You will probably also want to consult the National Dairy Code to learn the requirements for handling and transporting bulk milk and the criteria for raw milk.

Eggs:

Shell eggs can contain health risks. If you are importing eggs, you need to make sure that the eggs you are bringing in meet the same requirements as the eggs produced in Canada.

The guidelines also help to restrict the movement of eggs that contain cracked or dirty shells and ensure that eggs are sent to the proper facilities for grading and processing.

eggs.jpg

You must discard any inedible eggs and not use them in any food processing

Processed Egg Products:

In the guidelines you will find that you can only process and treat eggs if they are

  • Edible

  • Do not have an abnormal odour

  • Are not mouldy

  • Have not been in an incubator

  • Do not have an internal defect

  • Are not leaking

  • Are free from dirt and other foreign matter

You must discard any eggs that are inedible and they must not be used to prepare processed egg products.

Fish:

The regulations will outline which types of fish are not permitted for import, such as live freshwater mitten crab. It also gives guidelines for safely importing live or raw shellfish.

Fresh Fruits or Vegetables:

The regulations will cover topics such as:

  • Grade and certification requirements for apples, potatoes, onions and other fresh fruits and vegetables imported from the U.S and other countries

  • Rules regarding when small shipments of imported fruits and vegetables are exempt from certification

  • Regulations surrounding in-transit shipments of fresh fruits or vegetables from the U.S.

Importers must follow the rules regarding the certification of fruits and vegetables

Meat Products and Food Animals:

This section will outline rules regarding topics such as:

  • Edible meat products

  • The humane treatment of animals

  • Ante and post-mortem examination and inspections

  • Slaughtering and dressing

  • Food animal information documents and document keeping

  • Importing and exporting of food animals

Food Packaging

The SFCR outlines general packaging requirements that include:

  • Packages must be clean

  • Packages must be suitable for its intended use

  • Packaged must be free from odour that might affect the food

  • Packages must include the weight or volume requirements referred to in the SFCR.

food packaging.jpg

Food packaging must be clean an free from harmful odours

Preventative Food Safety Controls

Preventative food safety controls help to cut down on potential food safety hazards and help to reduce the chance of contaminated food entering the market.

As a food business, you are responsible for preparing, exporting, and importing safe food. It is important that you address potential hazards in areas such as:

  • Sanitation and pest control

  • Treatments and processes

  • Equipment

  • Maintenance and operation of establishments

  • Unloading, loading and storing food

  • Employee competence, health, and hygiene

  • Complaints and recalls

Sign Up for WHMIS Training from Wayco Today

Wayco offers WHMIS training for you and your employees at our Kitchener facility at 30 Adam Ferrie Place, Kitchener, ON. Our highly trained instructors will teach you everything you need to know about WHMIS so you and your staff can work safely. Contact us today to sign up.

What Is WHMIS?

WHMIS stands for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a "comprehensive national system for safe management of hazardous chemicals" and is legislated by three levels of government: federal, provincial, and territorial.

WHMIS is a Canada-wide law that was made to ensure that chemicals and hazardous substances are safely handled in the workplace. The law deals with 3 basic parts:

  • Labelling

  • Material Safety Data Sheets

  • Worker Education and Training

The History of WHMIS

In some workplaces, employees are exposed to flammable, toxic, and other harmful or deadly substances. Sometimes these products are not properly labeled.

Younger workers are especially at risk of being harmed by these hazardous substances if they are working with them without proper supervision, experience, and training.

WHMIS was instated to help protect workers by ensuring that these harmful substances are all labeled correctly and that workers are trained in the proper ways of handling dangerous substances.

WHMIS is quite unique in that it is a combined effort where a consensus was reached by labour, industry, and government stakeholders.

It makes sure that Canadian workers have easy access to health and safety information that relates to hazardous products that are used in the workplace.

hazardous materials.jpg

WHMIS makes sure that Canadian workers have easy access to health and safety information relating to hazardous products

Under WHMIS, workers:

  • Have the right to be informed about any hazardous products that they might come in contact with in their workplace

  • Can use this information to prevent any injuries or dangerous outcomes that might happen because of these hazardous products

  • Will hopefully have a reduction in injuries and diseases related to hazardous materials found in the workplace.

Most Recent Updates to WHMIS Came in 2015

WHMIS began in 1988, but was updated in 2015. The 2015 updates now reflect the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) that was developed by the United Nations .

This symbol indicates that there is a hazardous substance

Main Updates from WHMIS 2015

More Comprehensive Hazard Classification Criteria

In WHMIS 2015, hazardous products are now divided into two major groups: health hazards and physical hazards.

These two groups are then divided again into different classes of hazards. Some of the classes are further divided into subcategories.

Each class has its own pictogram that represents the hazards in that class. Each pictogram is recognizable by its red, diamond shaped border.

800px-GHS-pictogram-flamme.svg.png

New WHMIS Supplier Label Requirements

The labels placed on hazardous products play a very important part in helping workers identify hazards associated with the products, and what precautionary measures they need to take when handling them.

WHMIS 2015 has standardized the wording of hazards and labeling order so that both follow a certain format.

This means that when your workers see one of these standardized labels, they will be easily able to recognize what it means.

All flammable and other potentially dangerous substances have to have proper labels on them.

corrosive-substances.png

Pictogram warning that the substance is corrosive

Safety Data Sheets Are Now Standardized

Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) have also been standardized under WHMIS 2015. SDSs give detailed information about hazards and the precautionary measures your workers need to take for hazardous products in the workplace.

SDSs now have to follow a standardized 16-section format with specific information requirements and standardized language.

They need to cover proper handling and protection against overexposure, the health effects of overexposure, and emergency procedures. These sheets must appear on each hazardous substance in your workplace and be available for your workers.

gas-bottles.png

This pictogram lets workers know that there are gas bottles inside

WHMIS Education and Training Programs

Under WHMIS regulations, employers must educate and train their workers on how to work with and around hazardous products.

This means that as a plant manager, you need to make sure that your employees are aware of how WHMIS functions, what the hazards of the products they encounter in the workplace are, and the safe work procedures that they need to follow.

At a local level, you need to provide training for your employees so that they know how to access and understand SDSs. This training must take place before your employees handle any hazardous substances.

Not only do you need to train your employees who will come in contact with hazardous materials, whether they are moving them with forklift equipment or lifting them by hand, but you also need to train those who are even somewhat likely to be exposed to these hazards during work.

toxic.png

Toxic substances should carry this pictogram on their label

Additional Requirements from WHMIS 2015

In addition to the above guidelines, WHMIS 2015 also requires that physical hazard criteria are aligned with the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations .

Forklift Repairs - How Long Should They Take?

Forklift repairs can be costly both in downtime and in money. Learn how long they should take and how to reduce the wait time.

Are forklift repairs costing you too much time? Some simpler repairs can be completed in a few hours, while others can take a few days or even weeks to finish depending on the company that you choose to do the repair. Book your forklift service now.

Forklift Repairs - How Long Should They Take?

The time for each repair will vary depending on the extent of the damage, the complexity of the job, and the availability of the parts needed.

Common forklift repairs include fixing your brakes, repairing damage to your forklift chains, and fixing battery problems such as not holding a charge.

Read on to learn how long forklift repairs should take and how to reduce your wait time.

How to Lower the Time It Takes for Forklift Repairs

If you are in the material handling business or any other business that relies on forklifts, you will understand how costly downtime is! You don't have the time to wait for lengthy repairs to be completed. The following are some tips to help you reduce the time it takes for forklift repairs.

forklift maintenance.jpg

Regular maintenance costs less than full scale forklift repairs

To Speed Up Your Forklift Repairs, Keep Your Equipment Well Maintained

You've probably heard it said that ‘the best offence is a good defence.’ Well, this is true for forklift repairs as well. A well-maintained forklift is going to spend less time being repaired than one that has been neglected.

Keeping your forklift equipment well maintained will not only save you time on repairs, but will also save you money. On average, it is about 4 times more expensive to repair a forklift than to keep one properly maintained in the first place.

Regular maintenance is much more affordable than big costly repairs.

Take, for example, your forklift brakes. If you have your brakes serviced regularly, you can avoid costly repairs or replacements. About every 250 hours you should have the brake dust blown out.

The drums should be inspected every 2,000 hours, and the brake shoes should be replaced every 5,000 - 7,000 hours.

If you don't, dust and debris can get caught inside, creating ridges on the brake shoes. If you don't get them serviced, the ridges will be transferred to the brake drums.

If you have to replace your brake drums, it could cost you about $1,650 for two new drums. This repair could've been easily avoided with regular maintenance.

For safety reasons, regular maintenance on your forklift brakes should be done by a trained professional.

Regular maintenance can save you from costly repairs

Set Up a Regular Maintenance Schedule

Some forklift repair companies will also set up a regular maintenance schedule for you and remind you when maintenance is due. This can be another great time saver, as you don't have to worry about keeping track of the maintenance schedule for each one of your machines; they will do it for you.

Choose a Company with a Fully Stocked Parts Department

The company you choose to do the repair will affect the time it takes to get done. A company that has its own fully stocked parts department with parts for all forklift brands is going to be able to do your repairs much faster than one that has to order the parts that they need for your repair.

You should also find out if they partner with the top parts suppliers and if they offer same day shipping within Canada for special parts that may not be in stock.

parts.png

A service company that has a fully stocked parts department can finish your repairs faster

Choose a Company that Is Open When You Need Them

If your forklift breaks down on a weekend and you are on a deadline, you can't afford to wait for Monday morning to get it repaired.

Find a forklift service department, like Wayco, that is open when you need them to be, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Some companies can even have their service tech at your location within 2 - 3 hours. Some guarantee same day service.

Choose a Company that Offers Replacement Rentals

If you really can't afford any downtime due to unexpected forklift repairs, look for a forklift service department that offers rental forklifts for you to use while yours is being repaired. Some reliable companies will even offer you reduced rental rates while your forklift equipment is being serviced.

used-walkie-pallett.png

Renting replacement equipment while yours is being repaired can help you limit downtime

It Pays to Become a Regular Customer with a Service Department You Trust

The most reliable forklift service companies, like Wayco, will even tailor their inventory of parts to their regular clients. They will even offer discounts on over-the-counter parts to their regulars.

Choose a Service and Parts Department with Great Warranties

If you want peace of mind when it comes to your forklift repairs, go with a company that offers you hassle-free warranties. Look for 30 day - 2 year warranties on your forklift parts, as well as a comprehensive repair and exchange programs for engine transmissions and other parts.

Can You Save Time by Doing Repairs Yourself?

Most forklift repairs are best done by professional technicians because they are highly specialized, and many of the parts require computer programming.

Doing a repair incorrectly could end up costing you much more downtime and money than it would have if you simply take it to an expert.

However, you can usually do simple tasks such as topping up your various fluids and changing your filters yourself. The following video shows how to change the oil and filters on a basic diesel engine forklift.

Forklift Oil Leaks

If you think forklift oil leaks are mere nuisances that can be dealt with at some time in the future, think again. Learn why you should repair oil leaks now.

1. Oil that Has Leaked Out Can Catch on Fire

Oil and hydraulic fluids are combustible liquids, which means they ignite easily and burn with extreme rapidity.

If you have forklift oil leaks, then the liquid can spill out onto paper, employees' clothing, or wrapping that is lying around on your warehouse flooring. These items can easily ignite and burst into flames with just the slightest spark or ignition.

If operators or pedestrians smoke close to a forklift that has an oil leak, then they are also in danger of igniting a fire.

paper-fire.jpg

Oil that spills out onto paper on your facility floor can easily catch on fire

2. Oil Spills Can Create Safety Concerns

Oil that leaks out onto your facility floor is dangerous for both pedestrians and equipment. Oil is very slippery and can be the cause of slips and falls for your workers, and the loss of control for a forklift operator driving a vehicle over it. This could result in serious injuries and possible high compensation claims.

Another safety concern comes from the oil that escapes through a leak in a hydraulic system. The hydraulic fluid in these types of systems can reach temperatures up to 3000F and can cause severe burns if it comes in contact with anyone.

3. An Oil Leak Can Be an Indicator of a Bigger Problem

Forklift oil leaks are often a sign that there is a bigger problem than a simple leak. A leak will often happen before you have a serious breakdown, that is why it is important to find out the cause of the leak and have it looked after before you are faced with a bigger and probably much more costly repair.

If there is a problem with your transmission, axle, differential or steering gears then you will probably see a thick black or tan oil leak. If you require any of theses types of repairs, you should contact an experienced technician.

forklift maintenance.jpg

It is a good idea to get your forklift oil leak seen to right away before it becomes a more serious problem

4. Forklift Oil Leaks Can Cause Overheating

Overheating can easily destroy the more expensive parts of your forklift such as your pumps. The purpose of your oil is to cool the various moving components of your forklift.

Most forklifts have 4 or 5 extra gallons in reserve. This extra oil is used to cool its moving parts. A continuous leak will deplete these reserves and soon your vehicle will not have enough oil to keep its parts properly cooled.

Just because your mast continues to move up and down its full length doesn't mean that your engine has enough oil. That is why it is a good idea to regularly check your oil levels to make sure that they are topped up.

5. Oil Leaks Can Lead to Exposure to Other Harmful Contaminants

Excess heat is not the only thing that can ruin your engine. Dirt and contaminants can also do a lot of harm.

If you notice oil leaking out of your vehicle, that also means that dirt and other contaminants are able to get into your engine at the spot where the oil is leaking out. This is not a good thing!

These contaminants can clog up your oil filters as well as your spool valves, which will make the clutch packs slip. Contaminated oil will eventually damage your engine as well as other parts of your forklift.

hands-on-forklift-training.png

Contaminants can enter into your engine where your oil is leaking and cause serious damage

6. Forklift Oil Leaks Will Cost You Money

If your forklift is leaking oil, you may be tempted just to keep topping it up to keep your vehicle running.

This is only a temporary fix, and if you do this for for an extended period of time, you will be wasting a lot of money in replacing the leaking oil.

It usually costs much more to keep filling up your forklift with oil than to actually fix the cause of the leak.

7. Ignoring Oil Leaks Can Cause You Costly Downtime

If you decide not to repair forklift oil leaks, you will have to periodically stop your forklift, let it cool down, and then refill the oil.

This may not seem like a lot of time, but having to do this day after day can add up in a considerable amount of downtime. If ignoring the leak results in a much bigger repair, your downtime could be much longer.

Making the necessary repair to your forklift as soon as you detect a leak will save you from downtime right from the start.

If you are on too tight of a schedule and can't afford any downtime for repairs, you could consider renting a replacement forklift to use while yours is being repaired.

A reputable service company will rent you a replacement at a reduced rate while they are performing the necessary servicing.

What to Do if You Are Being Over Charged for Your Forklift Repairs

Don't be overcharged on forklift repairs. Get multiple estimates, check out reviews and ask how much the parts actually cost.

what-to-do-if-you-are-being-overcharged.png

Think You Are Currently Being Over Charged on Forklift Repairs? Here's What to Do

1. Get multiple estimates on the same repair

A great way to find out if you are being overcharged on your forklift repairs is to get an estimate from several different places, including the one that you normally deal with, to find out whether or not they are being competitive.

A trustworthy repair company should be willing to give you an estimate up front. Comparing estimates will let you see which facility has the best prices.

2. Ask to see the cost of the parts

Getting a breakdown of your estimate, including seeing the actual cost of the parts instead of just getting a total price, will help you to get a better picture of what you are being charged for. Ask if it is possible or a good idea to use a refurbished part for your repair instead of a brand new one.

Ask to see how much the parts for the repair actually cost

3. Read reviews for the service provider

Reading reviews from current customers for the service provider you are dealing with or the ones you are considering switching to can give you a great idea as to whether or not they are competitive with their pricing, while still giving excellent customer service and performing high quality work.

Importance of Finding a Forklift Repair Service Team You Can Trust

Your forklift was a large investment and one that you want to last as long as possible. That's why taking proper care of it is so important. You don't want to trust the care of your investment to inexperienced technicians.

You should look for a forklift repair service team that employs only highly trained professionals who know what they are doing.

Also, look for a service provider that has been in the business for a long time. Companies can only stay in business for a long time if they are doing their job right.

Trust your forklifts to a company that will provide you with the best-in-class customer service and that has experienced, knowledgeable, and properly trained technicians.

Forklift Repairs: Signs that You Need Them

Your Mast Is not Lifting or Lowering Properly

If you find that your mast (the frame that controls the lifting and lowering of your forklift) is not lifting your load quickly enough, or is jerking around rather than smoothly lifting and lowering, then you may need to have it repaired.

Before calling someone, though, check your hydraulic fluid levels to make sure that they are topped up.

But, if you see that any part of your mast has become stretched, rusty, bent, cracked, twisted, or misaligned, it's time to get it repaired.

Remember that a small issue can quickly become a bigger, more costly one if not seen to as soon as you notice it.

You Are Having Trouble Steering Your Forklift

If you are having difficulty steering your forklift, you should do something about it, as it is not only harder for you to operate, but it is also unsafe.

Make sure that your steering fluids are topped up. If they look thick and gunky, then it's time to have them changed. If the problem still persists, then your gears may be worn out. Repairing the gears is a forklift repair that needs to be handled by a trained professional.

If you are having trouble steering your forklift, it could affect your safety

Your Battery Is No Longer Holding a Charge

If you have an electric forklift, one of your biggest repair costs will probably involve your battery. But just because it isn't holding a charge doesn't necessarily mean that you have to buy a brand new battery.

Contact a qualified forklift repairs technician that you trust. They can take a look at your battery and let you know about any possible options that are more cost-effective such as:

Your Battery Has a Strong Rotten Egg Odour

If you smell a strong rotten egg odour coming from your battery, that is a sign that your forklift battery has suffered an impact to the cell containers and it must be repaired. You will need to take it to a professional.

Battery-Main-Image-1.png

If your battery has a strong rotten egg smell or swollen cables, you should get it looked at

Your Battery Has Swollen Cables:

If you see that your battery cables are swollen, especially at the connection points to the battery, then this is a good indication that you may need to repair or replace your battery.

Your Forklift Is Overheating

There are a number of things that could be causing your forklift to overheat. These include:

  • Broken fan or fan belt

  • Low coolant levels

  • Clogged filters

  • Damaged radiator

  • Over-use in hot temperatures

Just like your employees, your forklifts need frequent breaks and their fluids topped up, especially in the summer heat.

If your forklift's temperature gauge is in the "Red Zone" stop it, tag it out of service, and have it looked at by a trained professional to avoid any serious problems.

My Forklift Is Overheating, What Should I Do?

If your forklift is overheating, don’t ignore it. Get it looked at. Possible causes include a broken fan, damaged hoses, clogged filter, low coolant levels and others.

Find out what you should do if your forklift is overheating. Book your service appointment today.

If Your Forklift Is Overheating (in the "Red Zone") - Stop and Tag It

If you see that your forklift is overheating or "running hot," and your temperature gauge is reading in the "red zone," stop using it immediately so that you won't cause any damage to the key components. Tag it as ‘out of daily production’ until it can be looked at and the problem addressed.

Possible Causes of a Forklift Engine Overheating

Your Fan or Fan Belt May Be Broken

A broken fan or fan belt can cause your forklift engine to overheat. Your forklift's fan is located underneath your seat, near the back of your truck. Sometimes, items fall through the cracks under the hood and get caught in the fan or the fan belt causing damage.

Papers that are placed behind the operator's seat can easily slip through the crack and get caught in the fan. Other materials that are picked up from the warehouse floor can also get tangled up inside your fan and break it or cause it to corrode.

If your fan isn't totally broken, but is wearing out, it could still be causing your forklift to overheat. A worn-out fan cannot properly cool down your lift truck, so it will need to be repaired or replaced.

Solution: Keep your warehouse floor as clean as possible; free from dust and dirt as well as loose debris such as pieces of paper and pallet wrap.

Clean-warehouse-floor.png

It’s important to keep your warehouse floor clean and free from debris that could damage your forklift

Your Radiator Has Debris or Is Damaged

You radiator can also be affected by debris that is picked up off of your facility's floor or off the ground if you are working outside. You need to have this debris cleaned out from time to time to make sure that your radiator is functioning properly.

Solution: You should have your radiator regularly checked and cleaned out to make sure that debris is removed and that there are no leaks in it. In addition, keep your facility floor clear of dust and debris as much as possible.

You Coolant Levels Are Too Low

If your forklift's coolant levels are low then it may overheat. Make sure your fluid levels are topped up, especially during the summer months when the increased temperatures can cause forklifts to overheat faster than in the cooler temperatures.

Solution: Plan out a regular maintenance schedule for your forklifts and make sure that the coolant levels are checked during this service.

Your Water Pump May Be Damaged

Your water pump's job is to pull coolant through the radiator to help cool your engine. If your pump has a leak or a crack, it won't be able to do it job properly, and you may experience overheating.

Solution: Get your water pump inspected for any damage during regular maintenance. Catching a problem early is important to prevent more serious damage, especially to your engine.

forklift maintenance.jpg

Get your radiator, water pump, and coolant levels checked during regularly scheduled maintenance

Your Hoses Are Damaged or Worn

If the hoses in your engine are wearing out or are damaged, then they could be leaking fluids. This means that your engine may not be getting cooled as it should.

Solution: Make sure that worn out or damaged hoses are replaced during regular maintenance.

Your Filters May Be Clogged

The filters in your engine clear out the dirt in the air and prevent this dirt from getting into your engine and choking it. Loose debris on your warehouse floor can clog up your filters. Clogged filters may mean that your forklift is trying to operate on thick, dusty air. This will cause your engine to work harder and possibly overheat.

Solution: Have your filters changed regularly.

The Outside Temperatures May Be Too High

If you are working outside in hot temperatures, you may find that your forklift is overheating.

Solution: Give your forklifts frequent breaks when the temperature outside is especially high.

outdoor-forklift.png

Excessive outside temperatures could make your forklift overheat

You Are Using the Forklift Above Its Capacity Level

Each forklift has a maximum load capacity rating. If your forklift is being used to lift loads above its recommended capacity level then it may overheat. Working a forklift above its ability may not only do serious damage to the equipment, but it can also be dangerous.

Solution: Only use your forklifts to lift loads that are within their load capacity.

Your Forklift Is Being Driven at Top Speeds

Constantly driving your forklift at maximum speeds can also cause it to overheat.

Solution: Train your operators on the proper way to drive and operate their forklifts.

Make sure you forklifts are handling loads within their load capacity rating

Following a regular maintenance schedule and having your vehicles serviced properly will mean that your forklifts are much more fuel efficient. Planning out your lift truck maintenance schedule will ensure that repairs and tune ups are done on time.

If your forklift if regularly maintained and properly tuned, it will actually run more efficiently and save you money on fuel costs.

According to a report from the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries, a forklift that emits 5% CO will waste about 375 more gallons (1,420) of propane per year running a single daily 8-hour shift as opposed to a forklift that emits 0.5% CO.

If you consider that the average propane costs equal to about $0.89 per litre, then if your forklift is emitting 5% CO, you could be wasting about $1,264 of propane every year. If that same lift truck is running double shifts, it could be wasting as much as $2,528 per year!

Regular forklift maintenance and tuning will save you
money on fuel costs

Test Your Forklifts Regularly for CO Emissions to Know When They Need a Tune-up

Regular carbon monoxide emission testing during your forklift maintenance will let you know when your trucks need a tune-up and in turn will help you increase your fuel efficiency and lower harmful emissions. The CO concentration level of your forkifts should be 1% or less. If the level is greater than 1% your forklift should get a tune-up.

Routine CO Checks Will Save You Money

You can perform routine CO checks on your forklifts by purchasing a convenient and easy-to-use, hand-held CO exhaust gas analyzer. These devices are relatively inexpensive, about $2,000+ to purchase and use in-house. Considering the fuel costs, they can save you a lot over a short amount of time.

forklift facility.png

The way your facility it laid out will also affect your forklift operating costs

Other Factors that Affect Your Operating Costs

In addition to regular forklift maintenance, the following factors will also affect your operating costs:

Facility Layout: The way that your facility is laid out can also add to your operating costs. Both racking heights and forklift routes can increase fuel consumption. The higher your racks are, the harder your lift trucks will need to work to move product, and the more fuel they will consume in lifting to the higher heights. If your drop off points are highly congested, then your operators may have longer waiting times. This in turn means more fuel consumption.

The Condition of Your Tires: Worn out or damaged tires mean that your forklift has to work harder. This extra effort on your engine will increase your fuel consumption. Make sure you replace or repair damaged tires.

The Size of Your Forklift: The larger your lift truck, generally the more fuel it will use. Also, the size of the loads that you are carrying will affect how much fuel you use. Larger loads require more effort from your engine and therefore more fuel.

forklift.png

The size of your forklift and type of work it does will also affect costs

How to Calculate the Average Fuel Cost of Your Forklifts

You can perform a drive test on each of your forklifts to help you figure out the average fuel cost of your vehicles. The following steps will guide you through the process:

  • Step 1: Tell your operators to log the hour meter readings on their forklifts any time a fuel tank is replaced.

  • Step 2: Record the start and finish readings to the tenth digit in a log onboard the forklift so it can be easily located.

  • Step 3: Multiply the price per gallon of fuel by the number of gallons in the fuel tank.

  • Step 4: Divide the number that you get from Step 3 by the number of hours that your fuel tank was operated (You will get this number from the log book hours you have recorded in Step 2)

Here's an example to help you out.

  • Start Hour in Log Book: 730

  • End Hour in Log Book: 752

  • Total Hours Fuel Tank Lasted: 22

  • Cost per Fuel Tank = $25

  • Fuel Cost per Hour = Cost per LP Tank / Hours of use = $25 / 22 = $1.14

Therefore, in the above example, your forklift costs you $1.14 in fuel every hour it is in operation.

It’s helpful to calculate the average fuel cost of each of your lift trucks

Operating Cost Cutting Solutions

The following are some ways that you can help cut down on your forklift operating costs.

Change Your Layout: Take a look around your warehouse to see if there are ways in which you can cut down on higher traffic areas. You may need to change the layout of your facility to make this possible.

Ask Your Operators: It a good idea to ask your operators to get their input for any suggestions to help increase efficiency. They can be a good source of information about their daily challenges, and together, you can come up with possible solutions.

Test Alternate Routes: Make time to get your operators to test alternate routes around your facility to find out which ones are the most time efficient.

Train Your Operators: Train your operators in best practices for balancing fuel efficiency and productivity. It is a good idea to have drivers use gradual acceleration instead of "flooring it" to save on fuel.

In addition, get your operators to turn off their engines when they are not in use to save on fuel costs. An idling forklift will waste fuel and produce a large amount of harmful CO. If you are waiting for more than 10 seconds, it is better to turn off your engine and re-start it again than to let it idle.

Forklift Blue Light Meaning: Keeping Employees Safe

Forklift Blue Light Meaning: If you see a blue light on the floor in front of you need to stop because a forklift is approaching. Stay safe and learn what safety lights mean.

Forklift Blue Light Meaning: If you see a blue light on the floor in front of you, Stop! A forklift is coming through. Get your forklift safety lights now.

Forklift Blue Light Meaning Keeping Employees Safe.png

What Are Forklift Safety Lights?

Forklift safety lights are special, usually coloured lights that are installed on the rear, front, or sides or your forklift. Their purpose is to warn pedestrians or other nearby forklifts that you are coming close to them.

forklift-blue-light.png

A forklift blue safety light can indicate exactly where your forklift is to an approaching pedestrian or other operator - Images Source: Ideal Warehouse

Forklift Blue Light Meaning

The forklift blue safety light is usually installed on the rear of your forklift, although you may also install it on the front. This is probably the most common safety light that you will see on a forklift.

It a common safety feature because it shines an intense blue light 10 to 20 feet behind your vehicle onto the floor of the warehouse. The intensity, colour, and movement of the light will easily alert everyone that your vehicle is coming.

When backing up your forklift, it is especially difficult to see what is behind you as your view is very restricted in the rear. This means that it is harder for you to see pedestrians and other moving forklifts.

The forklift blue light will warn an approaching pedestrian or other forklift driver that you are coming, and it will show them exactly where you are coming from. This will give them plenty of time to stop or change their direction and avoid a possible collision.

red-safety-lights.png

Side spotters shine a red beam on either side of your forklift to shoe the safe distance that pedestrians and other vehicles need to keep

Forklift Red Light Meaning

Red is usually the choice for forklift side safety lights. The side spotters will emit an intense red beam onto the floor 10 to 20 ft on either side of your forklift thus indicating the safe distance that pedestrians and other vehicles need to keep between themselves and you.

This is especially helpful when a forklift has a rear end swing. Rear end swings commonly happen when forklifts are idling. The red side light will indicate to a pedestrian the safe distance for them to stand to avoid having their feet run over if your forklift unexpectedly swings around from the rear!

The following video will show how effective red side safety lights can be.

Red side safety lights can protect pedestrians from forklift rear end swings

Forklift White Safety Light Meaning

Often a bright white spotter light is installed on the front of forklifts. This bright white light can help alert both pedestrians and other equipment operators that you are approaching. The bright light is also very helpful when you are operating your forklift in darker, less lit areas of your warehouse.

Why Forklift Safety Lights Are Important for Employee Safety

Forklift Safety Lights Can Save a Pedestrian's Life

A warehouse can be a very dangerous place, especially for a pedestrian. The OSHA estimates that there are an average of 101 deaths and 97,570 forklift-related injuries each year with the number one cause of death coming from a pedestrian being hit by an oncoming fork truck.

Pedestrians in warehouses are often referring to documents on clipboards as they are walking from aisle to aisle, or they may be distracted by having to answer their cell phone. In addition, if the warehouse noise level is high, they may also be wearing protection noise reducing head gear. All of these distractions mean that pedestrians are not always aware of approaching forklifts.

Safety lights shining onto the warehouse floor have proven to be an effective method of warning pedestrians of oncoming lift trucks. Even if they can't hear the truck and are looking down, they will still be able to see the intense light on the floor in front of them. The light shines far enough ahead of the path of the oncoming forklift so that there is plenty of time for the pedestrian to stop and avoid getting hit.

Watch how the following video demonstrates how forklift safety lights can effectively warn a pedestrian and prevent a disastrous accident.

Forklift safety lights can help to prevent accidents and save lives

Forklift Safety Lights Can Help You Avoid Collisions with Other Forklifts

Forklift safety lights can also help you avoid or reduce the number of collisions with another forklift. The safety zone emitted by a front white light, side red lights, and rear blue light is an effective indicator for each operator to know not to enter that space. The lights are helpful in areas where there are blind spots, and in the intersections of your warehouse.

Forklift safety lights have been found to be more effective than warning alarms. Sounds in a large space such as a warehouse can be misleading as they blend into the other surrounding noises, and they can't indicate the precise location of another forklift the same way that the safety lights can.

How Forklift Safety Lights Work

Forklift safety lights project an intense blue or red beam of light onto the floor in front, behind, or to the side of your forklift's path.

This spot of light will effectively warn any pedestrians of your approaching forklift and which direction it is coming from. When a pedestrian sees the light, they can can safely stop before the forklift hits them.

forklift-blue-light.png

Even if the pedestrian is distracted looking down at a clipboard or cellphone, the intensity of the light will be enough to catch their attention and give them plenty of time to get out of the way.

Not only do forklift safety lights, also known as a blue warning forklift light, warn pedestrians of nearby forklifts, but they can also warn you about another forklift close to you.

When you see the light, you can tell which direction another driver is coming from, helping you to avoid a collision. this is especially helpful when you are working in tight spaces and around corners where visibility is limited.

The majority of forklift injuries and fatalities occur when a forklift hits a pedestrian

Why Forklift Safety Lights Are Important for Protecting Your Employees

Pedestrian Safety

The OSHA estimates that there are an average of 101 deaths and 97,570 forklift-related injuries each year, with the number one cause of death coming from a pedestrian being hit by a fork truck.

Forklift safety lights can effectively warn pedestrians of approaching forklifts. Lights can be more effective than warning sounds, especially if you are wearing protective headphones.

As well, lights can more accurately indicate the precise location and direction of the oncoming forklift than a warning alarm, as sounds can be misleading as to where they are coming from.

Collision Prevention

Forklift safety lights can also help cut down the number of collisions between your lifting devices. The lights can give other operators an accurate guide by indicating a safe working perimeter with other vehicles.

Front and Rear Blue LED Spotter Lights

The blue LED Spotter lights can be installed on the front and/or back or your forklifts. A forklift spotter light will project a bright blue beam of light 10 to 20 feet onto the floor in front of or behind your forklift.

This eye-catching beam will alert both pedestrians and other fork trucks that you are coming, and that they need to stop or move out of the way. Both the intensity, colour, and movement of the light will easily alert everyone in your vicinity what direction you are going in. This is especially helpful in the blind spots and intersections of your facility.

Many forklift accidents occur while you are backing up. This is particularly true because of your reduced visibility when you are going backwards, so it is helpful to install a rear blue spotter light.

safety zone.png

A white light in the front, red on the side, and blue in the rear will give you a complete safety light perimeter

Front Spotter Lights

You can also choose to install a bright white spotter light in the front of your forklifts. The bright white light is especially effective for use in darker areas of your warehouse because not only will it let others know that your forklift is nearby, but it will also help you better see where you are going.

Side Spotter Lights

A forklift side spotter light will shine an intense red beam onto the floor 10 to 20 feet to the side of your forklift.

The red glow will indicate to pedestrians and other lifting device operators the safe distance that they need to keep between themselves and your forklift.

If pedestrians and other lifts remain outside of this perimeter, they will be safe from collisions or possible foot injuries.

Vehicles that Could Benefit from Forklift Safety Lights

All types of lifting equipment in your warehouse could benefit from forklift safety lights. It is helpful to install them on:

  • Rider forklifts

  • Order pickers

  • Pallet jacks

  • Stand-up reach trucks

  • Tow tractors

2021 Guide to Forklift Inspection

You are required by law to carry out a regular forklift inspection on all your power lifting devices, from fork trucks to pallet jacks; whether they are gas, electric, propane or diesel

Remember, you are required by law to carry out a regular forklift inspection on all your power lifting devices, from fork trucks to pallet jacks; whether they are gas, electric, propane or diesel, to ensure their safety. Book your inspection today with Wayco's competent inspection personnel.

If You Own a Forklift, You Must Get It Inspected

As a forklift or lifting device owner, it is your responsibility to make sure that you get all of the inspections done that are required by law. Lifting devices include equipment such as forklift trucks, cranes, hoists, lifts, and elevating platforms.

It is a good idea to establish procedures that will ensure the regular inspection and repair of your lift trucks, and make sure that these inspections get carried out in a timely fashion.

There Are Two Types of Forklift Inspections: Load-Handling Capacity & General Safety and Maintenance

Load-Handling Capacity Inspections

The load-handling capacity inspection is done to find out whether or not your lifting device is capable of handling its maximum rated load. For example, if a device has a maximum load capacity of 3,000 lbs., then the inspector will determine if that piece of equipment is indeed capable of safely lifting 3,000 lbs.

The following is a forklift inspection checklist of all the areas that should be examined during a load-handling capacity inspection:

General Safety and Maintenance Inspections

The guidelines set out by the government of Ontario for the general safety and maintenance of lifting devices are fairly general.

They require that "any equipment is maintained in good condition" as well it needs to be "constructed and equipped in a way to adequately ensure the safety of all workers."

They do, however, provide a checklist of areas that should be examined as part of a general safety and maintenance forklift inspection:

Checklist D: The General Safety of the Powered Lift Truck

  1. Transmission

  2. Tires

  3. Steering

  4. Overhead Guard

  5. Propane Equipment

You need to do an initial inspection before you use your forklift for the first time

An Initial Forklift Inspection Must Be Done When You Purchase a Forklift

You are required to have your lifting devices inspected by a "competent" person before you use it for the first time. You need to make sure that its lifting capacity is what the manufacturer says it is.

New Lifting Devices: Any new forklift equipment that you purchase needs to be examined before you use it for the first time.

The purchaser - not the seller - is responsible for making sure that this takes place. this is because a forklift dealer could make modifications to the forklift that alter the manufacturer's specifications and make them invalid.

Used Lifting Devices: When you purchase a used forklift device, you also have to make sure that the lifting capacity matches the manufacturer's specifications. You have to have this done by a "competent" person before you use it for the first time.

Leased Lifting Devices: Unlike new and used purchases, it is the responsibility of the company supplying the leased lift truck to carry out the initial inspection of the load capacity. You, the purchaser, are responsible for any ongoing inspections.

Ongoing Inspections Must Be Done at Least Annually

According to clause 51(1)(b) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, you need to do a forklift inspection "as often as necessary but not less frequently than recommended by the manufacturer and in any case at least once a year."

If you use your forklift for single shifts, which equals about 2,000 hours, then once a year will meet this requirement. If you use your forklift more often than this, then you should have it inspected after every 2,000 hours of use.

You should also have it examined more often if you are operating your devices in severe environmental conditions, such as in areas that are extremely hot or in corrosive environments.

forklift fuel efficiency.jpg

You should have it inspected after every 2,000 hours of use.

A Pre Shift Inspection Must Be Done Before Each Use

A pre-shift inspection must be carried out before you operate your forklift every time. At the beginning of each shift, you need to carefully inspect your lifting device.

During your daily maintenance check, you should take a careful look at the following:

  • Forks - look for weld breaks, raise and lower the forks with and without a load

  • Tires - check to see if there are any chunks of rubber missing

  • Piston - check to make sure there are no leaks or drips

  • Hydraulic hoses - look for any punctures or cuts in the hoses

  • Chain - make sure that the tension on the chain is tight

  • Carriage - look for any weld breaks

  • Seat belt - make sure it is in good repair

  • Propane tank (if it has one) - make sure it isn't loose

  • Radiator - make sure that there isn't any debris or trash caught in it

  • Emergency brake and accelerator - make sure that they are functioning properly

  • Controls - ensure that they are all in good repair

  • Safety lights, battery, alarms, & horn - make sure they are all functioning properly

  • Fluid levels - check your engine oil, fuel, radiator water, and hydraulic fluid levels

If you find that during your inspection any of the above items are unsafe or need to be repaired, your forklift needs to be taken out of service, red-tagged, and repaired before you use it again. The following video will demonstrate how to effectively carry out a pre-shift inspection.

Find out how to perform a pre shift inspection

Here's What to Expect When You Have a Government Inspection

From time to time, your lifting devices may be inspected by a government forklift safety inspector.

If you follow the recommended guidelines for having your equipment inspected annually and you perform all of the required maintenance and service, then your inspection should go well.

The following video produced by the Ontario Ministry of Labour will give you a good idea about how a government inspection is carried out and what areas they will be looking at.

Follow the recommended guidelines for having your equipment inspected annually and perform all of the required maintenance and service, and your government inspection should go well

A Forklift Inspection Needs to Be Done By a "Competent" Person

You will need to get someone who is considered "competent" by the OHSA (Ontario Health and Safety Association) According to the OHSA a "competent" person is one who has "knowledge, training, and experience to organize the work and its performance." If you have the following knowledge and skills, you should be qualified to carry out these inspections:

  • A knowledge of the personal safety practices required to carry out routine and periodic inspections of lift trucks currently in use

  • Familiarity with the terms used by the Ontario Ministry of Labour's Guideline, of the documents mentioned in the Guideline, as well as industry terminology

  • The ability to understand lift truck manuals, manufacturer's specifications, drawings, and parts lists

  • A good knowledge of the purpose and function of all the devices, accessories, and components usually found on powered lift trucks and being able to inspect them to determine whether or not they are working properly

  • A working knowledge of electrical and electronic control circuit principles

  • A working knowledge of mechanical principles of structures, machines, mechanisms, etc.

  • A working knowledge, if applicable, of pneumatic principles

Please Note: It usually takes about 5 years of experience in field service work to acquire these qualifications.

Forklift Safety Products For Safe Handling

Spotter Lights

Collisions between workers and machines can be catastrophic. Pedestrians in facilities with forklifts are in danger, especially when using hearing protection, distracted by mobile device use, or in poorly lit areas.

Here’s what you need to add to forklifts when it comes to spotter lights:

  • Front: Creates a safer environment by emitting a bright, white light in front of the forklift.

  • Rear: Projects a bright blue beam of light onto the floor behind the forklift, alerting pedestrians of the approaching vehicle well in advance. Especially useful at blind intersections and rack aisles.

  • Side: Emits a red beam onto the floor on either side of the forklift. The red glow is a visual indicator of the safe distance pedestrians should keep between themselves and the forklift.

  • Arrow: Projects a large, bright blue or red arrow on the ground, 10 to 20 feet away in front of or behind your forklift. Alerts pedestrians that there is a forklift operating nearby and shows the pedestrian in which direction the lift truck is moving.

daylight-doorway-forklift-1267327.jpg

Help others know where you are by adding lights to your forklift.

Mirrors

Forklift operators need to know what is going on all around them at all times. Mirrors give a high range of visibility, allowing the operator to perform a quick safety check before travelling.

Options include:

  • Magnetic Dome Mirror or Tape Dome Mirror: Offers a 180° view and can be installed in seconds with double-sided tape or a magnetic arm.

  • Side Magnetic Mirror: Provides a side-view of the operator’s surroundings for safety and can mount anywhere in the operator’s compartment in seconds using the magnetic arm attachment.

  • Wide Magnetic Mirror: Gives the driver a wide angle view of the operator’s surroundings for safety and is ideal for travelling in reverse. Can mount on the overhead guard in seconds using the magnetic arm attachment.

Get a better view of your surroundings with forklift mirrors.

Checklists and Logs

Forklift safety involves constant checks and reminders. This is where these next two products prove to be invaluable.

First, there’s the Lift Truck Log, a daily forklift checklist system for operators. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety reminds us that all forklifts must be inspected before the beginning of each shift. The lift truck log provides 624 daily forklift checklists (over two years) in one complete kit.

Another feature is the forklift repair request form that can be filled out to alert management of any issues that need attention. All information is stored in the log to keep a history of the mechanical condition of the truck.

In the event that the forklift does not pass inspection, the lift truck log contains a lock-out tag to tag-out the equipment for safety.

The lift truck log comes in a highly durable and visible storage case that can be easily mounted anywhere on the forklift with double sided tape. Four different forklift safety checklists are available: propane counterbalance, electric counterbalance, electric pallet truck, and reach truck inspection forms.

On a smaller scale, a Checklist Caddy comes with a pad with 75 inspection carbon copy sheets and a pen attached with wire. They’re self-contained in a 4 1/2” x 7” polyethylene envelope with double sided tape for easy mounting. 624 events can be recorded per log.

  5. Why Following Forklift Certification Requirements in Ontario Is Important

Even though you don't get an actual license to drive a forklift like you do to drive a car, you do have to provide proof that you have received the proper training that meets the OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act) guidelines.

If you are looking for a forklift operator training course that meets the standards set out by the CSA (Canadian Standards Association), the Ontario Ministry of Labour and the OHSA, contact Forklifthub today.

Forklift License Requirements in Ontario

Forklifts are used in thousands of workplaces all across Ontario. They are found in manufacturing, mining, retail, wholesale, hospitality, hospitals, construction, and other large institutions.

If you currently operate a forklift, or if you would like to get a job operating one, you need to get the proper training that meets the federal and provincial safety standards.

forklift training.jpg

You need to be considered “competent” in order to operate a forklift in Ontario

According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, you must be deemed "competent" in order to operate a lifting device. This means that you need to have the training, knowledge and experience necessary to operate the particular forklift or lifting device that you are working with. In order to become "competent," you should do the following:

  1. Choose a Recognized Forklift Operator Training Course:

You should select a forklift training course that meets the standards laid out by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

Make sure that the course you choose covers the particular type of equipment that you will be working on.

The course should also give you written confirmation that you have successfully completed it. Usually. this means that you will be given a certificate at the end of the training.

2. Choose a Course that Offers Both In-Class and Practical Training:

You want to take a course that will give you theoretical as well as practical training.

In-Class Training

The in-class portion of your training should include topics such as:

Following your in-class training, you should be given a written test to determine whether or not you understand the principles of operating a forklift, including best safety practices.

hands-on-forklift-training.png

The more practice time you get, the better your skills will become - image source: Rashtriya Technical Institute

Practical Training:

Your practical training should allow you to have plenty of time actually operating the type of equipment that you will be using in your job.

Just like driving a car, operating a forklift will improve with practice. You will want to get that practice under the guidance of a professional trainer - not on your own.

Sometimes training will be done at your place of work, or if this is not possible, there are training facilities that allow you to come there to do your training on their equipment.

At the end of your practical training, you should be given a practical test to make sure that you are fully competent.

3. Keep Your Training Up-to-Date:

It is a good idea to complete a practical retraining course every 18 months. The Canadian Safety Association requires you to renew your certification every 3 years. This means taking a refresher course to keep your skills up-to-date.

4. Get Training if You Switch Forklift Types:

Not all forklifts are the same. Because of this you need to enroll in a course that will teach you to properly operate the specific type of lift truck that you will be operating.

If your company buys new equipment that is different from the equipment that you have previously used or if your change jobs and are working on different equipment, then you will need training on these new devices.

There are 8 basic classifications of forklifts/lift trucks. The vehicle's classification is determined by two main factors: the type of fuel used to power it and the type of work or purpose it is used for. To learn more about these different classifications, click here.

types-of-forklifts.png

You need to be trained on the particular type of forklift you will be operating

5. Why Following Forklift Certification Requirements in Ontario Is Important

It's the Law: Unlike driving a car, you don’t need an actual license to operate a forklift in Ontario. It is extremely important, however, that you know and follow forklift certification requirements in Ontario because it is the law. If you do not have the proper training and certification required to operate a forklift, then you are not legally allowed to do so.

It Can Save Your Life or Someone Else's: A forklift can be an extremely dangerous piece of equipment. If you haven't been properly trained in the correct safety procedures of operating a lifting device, you run the risk of getting into an accident that can either cause bodily harm or cause fatal injuries for yourself or your co-workers.

It Can Make You a More Efficient and Effective Worker: Proper training will help you become a better forklift operator. You will learn how to work more efficiently and effectively while still being safe. This type of training will make you a more valuable employee for your company.

The Advantages & Disadvantages of a Pre-Owned Forklift

A pre-owned forklift may give you more bang for your buck than purchasing a new one. especially if you are going to be using it for less than four hours a day. Find out why a pre-owned forklift is a wise investment.

Advantages-Disadvantages-of-pre-owned-forklift.png

Purchasing a pre-owned forklift may give you more bang for your buck than purchasing a new one. Most experts agree that you are better off buying a used forklift if you are going to be using it for less than four hours a day. There are other situations when a pre-owned forklift is a wise investment - read on to find out why.

Need some expert advice choosing the best pre-owned forklift equipment? Contact the experts at Wayco. You can trust Wayco to help you find the perfect, high quality, used forklift for your particular needs at a price you can afford.

pre-owned-forklift-advantages-disadvantages-chart.png

Advantages of a Pre-Owned Forklift

Savings - You Can Often Pay half the Price for a Pre-Owned Forklift

Purchasing a brand new forklift is a large investment. If your funds are limited, then going with a pre-owned forklift may be the best option for you. Often, you can find a quality used vehicle for about half the price of a new one.

Your Buying Power Increases When Purchasing Used

If you have a limited amount of money that you can spend on a forklift, then you may be limited in your choices if you purchase new. You may have to settle for a forklift that is of a lower quality than you would like. The same amount of money could get you a pre-owned forklift that is actually better in terms of performance and quality .

fork-lift-truck.jpg

By purchasing used, your money will go further, so
you may get a better quality forklift

You Can Choose a Forklift that Your Operators Are Familiar with

Newer models of forklifts often come with a new design and different features. While this is usually a good thing, the unfamiliar design may mean that you have to spend extra time and money to train your operators on the new equipment.

Change doesn't come easy to many people, and your operators may not welcome the idea of re-training. Purchasing a pre-owned model that they are already familiar with means that they will be comfortable with your choice and can get to work right away.

You Will Probably Find It Easier to Get Parts for a Pre-Owned Forklift

Because they have been around longer, you will probably find it easier to find parts for used forklifts. Newer models may be too new to have a good supply of parts available. Having said that, because a new forklift is new, it shouldn't need parts right away.

pre-owned-forklift.jpg

You may find it easier to get parts for a pre-owned forklift

Disadvantage of a Pre-Owned Forklift

You May Get a Limited Warranty or No Warranty at All

In general, a new forklift will come with a longer and more comprehensive warranty than a pre-owned one. However, if you work with a reputable dealer, you will find certified pre-owned forklifts that are backed by exceptional warranties to help ease any worries you might have. Find a dealer you can trust; one that carefully inspects and certifies all of the pre-owned forklifts that they sell.

A Pre-Owned Forklift Will Show Visible Signs of Wear and Tear

Just like buying a used car, a used forklift is not going to look perfect. It will have visible signs of wear and tear. It is a good idea to ask for a detailed report of any maintenance issues that the vehicle has had before you decide to purchase it.

Find out how long the forklift has been in use and how many hours per day it was used. A lift truck that is 4 years old and has been used less than 4 hours a day is going to have more life left in it than one of the same age but was used 8 hours a day.

used-walkie-pallett.png

A pre-owned forklift will show signs of wear and tear

A Pre-Owned Forklift May Not Have the Ergonomic Features You Need

Forklift technology is always improving, especially in the area of ergonomics. An older, used model may not come with the type of features that will keep your workers comfortable and healthy during their long shifts.

A Pre-Owned Forklift May Not Come with the Same Financing Options as New Ones

You may find it difficult to get the same financing options when you purchase a used forklift as you do with a new one, especially if you are doing a private sale. Some reputable forklift dealers will, however, offer financing for both new and used purchases. Find one that will take your old model as a trade in to save even more.

Everything You Need To Know About Your Forklift Battery

Your forklift battery is a vital and costly part of your electric forklift. Taking proper care of your forklift battery will help you to protect that investment by extending its lifespan.

Your forklift battery is a vital and costly part of your electric forklift; without it, you aren't doing anything. Taking proper care of your forklift battery will help you to protect that investment by extending its lifespan. If you are using and operating electric forklifts on a daily basis, then you should know and understand all that you can about their proper care and handling.

Click on each section below to learn more:

  1. Forklift Battery Safety Is Important

  2. How to Properly Handle a Forklift Battery

  3. How to Properly Charge a Forklift Battery

To learn more about proper battery care and handling, contact the experts at Forklift Hub.

Forklift Battery Safety Is Important

A forklift battery is extremely heavy - about the weight of a car or mini van. Therefore, they can be dangerous if not handled correctly. According to the Canadian Safety Association, your employees must be trained to safely handle and move batteries using the proper equipment. The following is a breakdown of how to safely handle and charge a forklift battery. Practical hands-on training is important to learn how to do it right.

1. How to Properly Handle a Forklift Battery

Always Use Specially Designed Equipment to Move Your Battery: Forklift batteries are extremely heavy, so you should never try to move them yourself. You should always use special equipment such as a walkie pallet jack that has been equipped with a transfer carriage to move a battery.

walkie pallet jack.gif

Always use special equipment such as a walkie pallet jack to move or lift your battery.

Set Up an Eye and Hand Washing Station: Batteries contain hazardous liquid, such as sulfuric acid in lead-acid batteries, so you don't want this liquid to come into contact with your hands or eyes. If contact does occur, your facility should have an eye and hand washing station located close to where you will be handling and recharging your forklift batteries so that it can be removed as soon as possible.

Wear Protective Clothing: It is important to wear chemical-resistant protective gear, including gloves and glasses, when you are handling a forklift battery. These will help prevent any hazardous liquids from the battery getting onto your hands or in your eyes.

Wear Steel Toe Shoes or Boots: Because of the extreme weight of the forklift batteries, make sure that you protect yourself by wearing steel toe footwear when handling them.

Don't Wear Metallic Jewelry: Take off any metallic jewelry that you are wearing when you are handling or charging a forklift battery. Even if they are disconnected, a battery can be an electrical hazard, so you don't want to be wearing any conductive materials.

safety goggles.jpg

You should wear protective equipment such as safety
goggles when handling a forklift battery.

2. How to Properly Charge a Forklift Battery

Set Up a Battery Charging Area: It is a good idea to set up a special area in your warehouse or facility for battery charging.

Charge Your Lead Acid Batteries When They Are at 80% Discharge: The optimum time to charge your forklift battery is when it has discharged 80%, or in other words, when it only has 20% of a charge left.

If you charge it before this time, you may reduce your batteries lift depending on the type of battery. If you allow your battery to discharge more than 80%, you can also do damage to it.

Rinse off a Battery the Has Overflown: If your battery has an overflow, then you should rinse it off to help prevent it from corroding.

Don't Overcharge Your Battery: Overcharging can decrease the life of your battery. Some batteries are designed with systems that prevent them from being overcharged. If yours doesn't have this, then you need to be careful not to overcharge it.

forklift.jpg

Once your forklift battery is at 80% discharge, you
should charge it again.

Make Sure Your Charger Is Compatible with Your Battery: You need to make sure that the charger you are using matches the voltage and amperage of your battery. To help prevent connecting your battery to the wrong charger, it is a good idea to colour code your connectors and clearly mark your chargers so that it is clear which connectors go where. Getting proper training on how to safely charge your batteries will keep you safe and will also protect your batteries.

Turn Off the Charger before Connecting and Disconnecting: Make sure that your battery charger is turned off before you connect your battery to it. You also need to turn it off before you try disconnecting your battery.

Charge Your Battery in the Proper Temperature: If you charge your forklift batteries in extreme heat or cold, it can cause reduced service life. You should contact your battery manufacturer to find out their recommended charging temperature, as this varies among different types of batteries.

Use only pure or distilled water to fill up your forklift battery.

Add Water if Needed after Charging: Never add water to a wet-cell battery before you charge it. After the charging is complete, add pure or distilled water to bring the electrolytes to the right level.

Note: Most industrial batteries will last for about 1,500 charging cycles. If you notice that the battery won't charge fully the way it used to, then it probably has reached its limit.
