Here are the top reasons why Hangcha has the best environmentally friendly forklifts on the market. Click on each reason to learn more.

Hangcha has some of the top environmentally friendly forklifts on the market

Hangcha’s Environmentally Friendly Forklifts

1. No Harmful Emissions:

Lithium-ion batteries do not release harmful emissions into the environment as fossil fuel-powered forklifts do. This makes them safe to use indoors.

Propane is a relatively clean-burning fuel that doesn't emit wastes such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, or methane. However, it does emit low levels of carbon dioxide. It can be hazardous if you breathe it in or swallow it as it will take the place of oxygen in your lungs, making it difficult to breathe.

Electric forklifts on the other hand do not have any harmful emissions, so they are completely safe to use indoors.

2. Longer Lifespan:

Hangcha lithium batteries can last up to twice as long as a lead acid battery

Lithium-ion forklifts have twice the service life as compared to lead-acid powered electric forklifts. Lead-acid batteries typically last between 1,000 and 1,500 cycles. That means that if you charge your forklift once a day, then your battery will last 1,000 to 1,500 days.

Lithium-ion forklifts manufactured by Hangcha can last up to 20,000 hours, so if you use it 8 hours a day it will last 2,500 days.

Hangcha’s lithium-ion battery packs are designed to last a long time. Because of this, Hangcha offers up to a 10-year or 20,000-hour warranty on their Lithium-Ion Phosphate (LiPO4) battery packs.

In addition, the battery packs will retain at least 80% residual capacity over 4,000 full charges.

3. No Acid:

Lithium batteries are lead-free making them environmentally friendly forklifts

Lithium batteries don't contain acid. The acid in a lead-acid battery is made up of both sulfuric acid and lead. Both of these substances can be harmful to the environment as they can contaminate groundwater if the battery has not been properly disposed of. In addition, sulfuric acid is highly corrosive and lead can cause adverse health effects, especially in children.

4. Constant Voltage Level During Discharge:

Lithium-ion batteries keep a constant voltage level during the entire discharge cycle. This means that you can save as much as 50% in energy costs compared to lead-acid batteries further adding to the fact that they are environmentally friendly forklifts.

5. High Energy Density:

Hangcha’s environmentally friendly forklifts will give you longer run times.

Hangcha’s lithium-ion battery packs have DOUBLE the energy density of a lead-acid battery of the same dimensions. The voltage supply is also stable throughout the energy discharge giving you longer run times. This means that you won’t have to charge your forklift as often which is another energy saver.

6. Battery Management System:

Hangcha’s battery management system is designed to continually monitor the lithium-ion cells and other vital components in your battery.

This innovative system provides you with:

  • Overcharge/over-discharge protection

  • Fault monitoring, battery health estimates

  • Battery current/voltage detection

  • A low cost/low power consumption feature.

All of these features contribute to the reason why Hangcha has some of the best environmentally friendly forklifts.

7. Faster Charging Speeds:

Hangcha’s lithium batteries can charge in only 2 hours

Lithium-ion forklift batteries can be fully charged in as little as 2 hours and don't need to cool down after charging which again means further energy savings.

It can take 8 to 10 hours to charge a lead-acid battery plus another 8 hours to cool down. If you run consecutive shifts, you will probably need to purchase extra lead-acid batteries for each forklift to avoid downtime.

8. More Efficient Charging:

Not only do Hangcha batteries charge faster than lead-acid, but they are also substantially more efficient when charging and discharging. In addition, they are completely recyclable adding to their environmental friendliness.

9. Never Need Watering:

You don’t have to water lithium-ion batteries

Lithium batteries never need watering so you won’t be using as much water or spending time on this maintenance task. However, if you have a lead-acid battery, forklift, you need to keep the right amount of water in it for it to work at its full capacity.

10. No Equalization Charging:

Lithium batteries do not need equalization charging. Most lead-acid batteries do. Equalization overcharges your battery to correct some of the cells which may only be holding a half-charge.

To do this you need to charge your battery for an additional 3 or more hours at a low stream of power which uses even more energy. Your battery will also need additional cooling time after the equalization charging.

No equalization charging adds up to more energy savings.

11. Quieter:

Electric forklifts are extremely quiet when running, unlike fossil fuel engine forklifts which are extremely loud especially in indoor applications. Therefore, using electric forklifts mean less noise pollution.

No Battery Watering

Lithium batteries are easier to maintain

Lithium batteries never need watering! However, if you have a lead-acid battery, you need to keep the right amount of water in it in order for it to work properly.

No Battery Cleaning

Lithium batteries never need cleaning or need to have their acid level checked. They are virtually maintenance-free.

No Equalization Charging

Most lead-acid battery manufacturers recommend that you do an equalization charge each week. Lithium batteries never need this done.

Faster Charging Speeds

Lithium-ion forklift batteries can be fully charged in as little as 2 hours and don't need to cool down after charging. It can take 8 to 10 hours to charge a lead-acid battery, plus another 8 hours for cooling.

Easier to Charge

Lithium-ion batteries are easier to charge and they charge faster

Lead acid batteries are heavy and need to be taken to a special charging area to charge. Lithium-ion battery forklifts are much lighter, often come with on-board charging, and don't require a special charging area.

Save Energy

Lithium-ion batteries keep a constant voltage level during the entire discharge cycle, which means you can save as much as 50% in energy costs compared to lead-acid.

Battery Management System

Enjoy overcharge/over-discharge protection, fault monitoring, battery health estimates, battery current/voltage detection, and a low cost/low power consumption feature.

Specific Classes of Hangcha Forklifts

Mini Pallet Jack

Hangcha forklift warranty: 90 days on labor, 6 months on parts and 1 year on the frame and the transmission

A mini pallet jack is perfect if you need to move product in a very small space such as a retail location or grocery store.

Manual Pallet Jack

Hangcha forklift warranty: 2 years on the pump and chassis

Manual pallet jacks do not have an electric motor; they are operated by hand. This type of pallet jack is larger than the mini version and can lift heavier loads.

Class 1: Electric Motor Rider Forklifts

Hangcha forklift warranty: 2 years or 4,000 hours bumper to bumper

Electric motor rider forklifts are probably the most common type of forklift. They have an electric motor powered by an industrial battery that is either lead-acid or lithium-ion.

They are ideal for using indoors as they don't give off any harmful fumes. They usually have cushion tires, which are great for smooth surfaces, but they can also be equipped with pneumatic tires to use outdoors.

Class 2: Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Forklifts

Hangcha forklift warranty: 1 year or 2,000 hours bumper to bumper and 2 years or 4,000 hours on the powertrain

Electric motor narrow aisle forklifts are great for smaller work environments as well as those hard-to-reach areas.

A narrow aisle forklift will allow you to maximize your storage space. Popular models include reach trucks and order pickers.

Class 3: Electric Motor Hand or Hand-Rider Forklifts

Hangcha forklift warranty: 6 months or 1,000 hours bumper to bumper and 1 year or 2,000 hours on the powertrain

These types of forklifts include walkie pallet jacks or rider models. They have an electric motor that can be powered by either a lead-acid or lithium-ion battery.

They are a great choice for loading and unloading delivery trucks and are best used for shorter distances.

Class 4: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks with Cushion Tires

Hangcha forklift warranty: 2 years or 4,000 hours bumper to bumper

IC cushion forklifts are usually used indoors so they are most often propane powered because propane gives off fewer harmful contaminants.

They are less expensive to purchase than an electric forklift and they can also be used outdoors if the terrain is smooth.

Class 5: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks with Pneumatic Tires

Hangcha forklift warranty: 2 years or 4000 hours bumper to bumper

Internal combustion (IC) forklifts run on fossil fuels such as propane or diesel. This category of forklift is equipped with pneumatic tires, which make them a good choice for outdoor applications that have uneven surfaces.

Class 7: Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks

Hangcha forklift warranty: 1 year or 2,000 hours bumper to bumper and 2 years or 4,000 hours on the powertrain

Rough terrain forklifts are designed to handle extremely rough and rugged surfaces like those found on construction sites, railroad yards, and shipyards.

They usually have higher lifting capacities as well.

Hangcha Pricing Advantage

Hangcha pricing is the lowest in the industry

Here are some excellent reasons to choose a Hangcha forklift over other manufacturers:

1. Hangcha Forklifts Are Priced Significantly Lower Than Other Brands

It will surprise you to see how much you will save when you purchase a Hangcha forklift! In fact, buying a new Hangcha forklift could make more sense than buying a used forklift. Contact us today for an incredibly low quote.

2. Hangcha Forklifts are Just As Good If Not Better Than Other Brands

Learn more about Hancha

Because Hangcha is relatively new to the North American market, you might be wondering about the quality of their forklifts. Hangcha has been engineering and manufacturing high-quality forklifts since 1956 and you'll find that their forklifts match or even exceed the quality of other top brands.

Hangcha knows how to make a forklift that will last, and they are among the top 8 forklift manufacturers in the world.

3. Hangcha's incredible warranty adds to their value

Hangcha offers up to a 10 year or 20,000 hour warranty on their Lithium Ion Phosphate (LiPO4) battery packs. These battery packs will retain at least 80% residual capacity over 4,000 full charges. Receiving such a great warranty makes Hangcha pricing even more attractive.

Pallet Jacks / Stackers: $

Pallet jacks are the smallest and least expensive type of forklift

Pallet jacks and stackers are the smallest types of forklifts you can purchase. Their size and lifting capacity make them the least expensive to purchase.

They are the perfect choice for smaller spaces where you need to move heavy products, but you don't have a lot of room to maneuver.

They work well for smaller warehouses and retail settings. They are also narrow enough so that your customers will not be bothered by them if you need to put out merchandise during opening hours.

Lead-Acid Electric Forklifts: $$$-$$$$

Electric forklifts give you a lower total cost of ownership over IC forklifts

Even though electric forklifts cost more to purchase initially, their operating costs are much lower and they generally have a longer lifespan than internal combustion (IC) forklifts powered by propane or diesel. This means that you will have a lower total cost of ownership.

This is because the cost for fossil-fuels is much higher than the cost of electricity to charge your batteries. If you would like to see how much you could save by buying an electric forklift over an internal combustion one, check out our total cost of ownership calculator.

Lithium-Ion Electric Forklifts: $$$$-$$$$$

Lithium-ion forklifts are one of your best buys

Even though lithium-ion electric forklifts are a bit more expensive to purchase than lead-acid battery forklifts, they will give you a lower total cost of ownership, making them a better investment for you.

Here are some of the reasons why lithium-ion batteries will give you a lower total cost of ownership than a lead-acid battery forklift:

  • They have a longer lifespan than lead-acid batteries, so you don't have to replace them as often

  • They last longer and use less energy so you save on energy costs

  • They are virtually maintenance-free so you save on servicing costs

  • They have faster charging speeds and don't need to cool down after charging so you save on downtime costs

  • They are much easier to charge so you save on labour costs

To learn more about the great advantages of lithium over lead-acid, download our free pdf: 13 Reasons Why Every Forklift Fleet Should Be Switched to Lithium.

Internal Combustion Cushion Forklifts: $$-$$$$

Hangcha pricing: Propane forklifts are usually the least expensive

Internal combustion (IC) forklifts run on fossil fuels such as propane or diesel. IC cushion forklifts are usually used indoors, so they are most often propane powered because propane gives off fewer harmful contaminants.

Propane forklifts are less expensive to purchase than diesel. In addition, cushion tire forklifts are usually smaller than pneumatic forklifts because they need to operate in tighter spaces, which also makes them less expensive.

Internal Combustion Pneumatic Forklifts: $$$-$$$$$

Hangcha pricing: Diesel forklifts are more expensive than propane

IC Pneumatic forklifts are larger and more rugged than IC cushion forklifts which make them more expensive to purchase. If they run on diesel, they will also be more expensive than a propane model.

How Capacity Affects Hangcha Pricing

Capacity refers to the maximum size of load a forklift is able to move. The capacity of a forklift is one of the largest factors in determining the price that you pay. The larger the capacity, the higher the price.

However, you want to make sure that you purchase a forklift that has the capacity to lift the loads that you need it to.

Purchasing one that has a lower capacity than you need can be dangerous to your operators and to your equipment as it could become unstable and tip over.

Lifting more than the maximum capacity could also cause damage to your forklift causing it to wear out faster or causing your forks to break.

Buying a new Hangcha forklift vs buying used means that you will be getting a much longer and more comprehensive warranty on your forklift than you could ever hope to get if you buy a used model.

The best used forklift dealers will offer you a maximum of a 30-day warranty on your used forklift. However, you will get a much longer warranty on a new forklift purchase.

For example, Hangcha offers up to a 10 year or 20,000 hour warranty on their Lithium Ion Phosphate (LiPO4) battery packs. These battery packs will retain at least 80% residual capacity over 4,000 full charges.

4. You Will Have No Worries about Whether It Was Properly Maintained

Buying a new Hangcha forklift vs buying used means you get a forklift in top shape

Another great advantage of buying a new Hangcha forklift vs buying used is that you won't have to worry whether or not the forklift was properly maintained. There are a lot of unknowns when you buy any type of used equipment, such as whether the previous owner:

  • Kept up with all the recommended maintenance schedules

  • Operated the forklift with care such as not driving it too fast

  • Didn't lift loads above the recommended capacity

When you purchase new equipment, you are getting a clean slate and you know that you are starting out with a forklift that is in top shape and is going to last.

5. If You Switch to a Lithium Electric Model, You Will Save Even More

Switching to lithium-ion will save you money and help the environment

Lithium-ion gives you many incredible advantages over lead-acid such as:

  • More environmentally friendly

  • They have a longer lifespan

  • They last longer and use less energy

  • They are virtually maintenance-free

  • They have faster charging speeds and don't need to cool down after charging

Forklift Buying Guide

1. Should you buy new or used?

There are pros and cons to purchasing new or used forklifts depending on your particular situation. Here are some factors to consider when you trying to decide which would be better for you.

Budget:

Buying a used forklift can be a very wise move if you are on a tighter budget as long as you do your homework and make sure you are getting a quality vehicle.

If you can afford it, a new forklift will come with a longer warranty and you can be sure that it will be in better condition than a used one.

In addition, some new forklifts, like Hangcha's, are priced so incredibly low that you might find that buying a new forklift is a better option than purchasing a used one.

Whether you buy new or used will depend on your budget

Depreciation:

A brand new forklift will depreciate in value the moment you start using it, similar to a car, so buying used often makes more sense.

Timing:

You can usually get a used forklift much faster than ordering a new one. This will allow you to start using your equipment right away. However, some forklift dealers will have new models in stock that you can also get right away.

Buying new usually means you can get the exact model that you need

Selection:

When purchasing a new forklift, you can order exactly what you need. If you choose to purchase a used model, you may have to settle for something that isn't exactly what you need simply because there isn't a pre-owned one for sale when you are looking to buy.

2. What fuel type should you choose? Electric, propane or diesel

Where you need to use your forklift will also determine the type you should purchase. Do you want to use your forklift indoors, outdoors, or both?

Electric forklifts:

Electric forklifts are your best choice for indoor applications or if you need to use your forklift around food as they give off zero emissions.

Some electric forklifts do not function well outdoors as they are susceptible to extreme temperature changes and wet conditions. However, some electric forklifts are now designed to be able to handle working in outside conditions.

Propane forklifts:

Propane is also an option for indoors, however, you need to make sure that you have proper ventilation at your facility.

Propane is a good choice if you need your forklift to operate inside and outside making them great for warehouses and material handling industries.

Diesel forklifts:

Diesel forklifts are not a good option for indoor applications due to their harmful emissions.

They may be a good choice if you need a powerful option to work outside in construction or at a rail or shipping yard.

3. What capacity do you need?

Knowing the capacity that you need will also help you determine the best forklift for you. To determine the capacity you should get, you will need to know what size of loads you typically need to move and how high you need to lift those loads.

Purchase a forklift that has the capacity to lift the loads you need it to

It is important to purchase a forklift that has the capacity to lift the loads that you need it to. Purchasing one that has a lower capacity than you need can be dangerous to your operators and to your equipment as it could become unstable and tip over.

Lifting more than the maximum capacity could also cause damage to your forklift causing it to wear out faster or causing your forks to break..

4. Should you choose lithium or lead-acid?

Lithium-ion electric forklifts have many advantages over lead-acid ones including:

Faster Charging Speeds:

Lithium-ion batteries charge much faster. For example, Hangcha's lithium-ion forklifts take 2 hours to fully charge compared to charging a lead-acid battery truck for 8-10 hours and allowing it to cool down for another 8-10 hours.

Lithium batteries are virtually maintenance free

Less Maintenance:

You do not need to do the manual maintenance for a lithium battery like lead-acid battery packs require. For example, lithium-ion batteries do not need to be watered or have acid level checks performed. They are virtually maintenance-free.

Can Be Used in Cold:

Some lithium-ion batteries, such as those available from Hangcha can run in cold applications because they are designed with an electrical heating element. When compared to a lead-acid powered truck, the batteries in the lithium-ion heat up to 32 degrees F in one-third of the time it would take the lead-acid powered truck.

Lithium forklifts are much more environmentally friendly than lead-acid

Environmentally Friendlier:

Lithium-ion batteries do not release harmful emissions into the environment or use acid and they have twice the service life when compared to lead-acid powered forklifts. They are also substantially more efficient when charging and discharging and are completely recyclable.

5. What size of forklift should you buy?

Make sure that the forklift you purchase can easily maneuver in the space that you have. You need to take a look at the following:

  • How much space do you have to maneuver around?

  • How wide are your narrowest aisles?

  • Will you be loading and unloading trailers?

If your space is tight, then choose a model designed for narrow aisles.

The following types of forklifts are great for smaller spaces:

6. Should you choose cushion or pneumatic tires?

The main difference between pneumatic and cushion tires is the tread. Cushion tires are smooth, while pneumatic tires have a deep tread. Cushion tires are a better option for indoor applications and pneumatic work better on outside, uneven, or rough surfaces.

Pneumatic Tires:

Pneumatic forklift tires are very similar to car tires. They have a very thick tread that will give you great traction over uneven or loose surfaces.

There are essentially two types of pneumatic tires: solid pneumatic tires and air-filled pneumatic tires.

Pneumatic tires are great for outdoor applications

Air-filled Pneumatic Tires:

An air-filled pneumatic tire has an airtight inner core filled with pressurized air and covered by a tread that is usually reinforced with steel belting or other materials.

Solid Pneumatic Tires:

Solid pneumatic tires, on the other hand, are made of solid rubber or sometimes filled with foam instead of air. This makes them more puncture-proof and durable than air filled tires, but they don't give you as smooth of a ride.

Cushion tires are smooth and solid

Cushion Tires:

Cushion tires are made of solid rubber and are usually much smaller than pneumatic tires.

Cushion tires give you a lower centre of gravity and smaller turning radius, so they are better for inside applications where space is limited, whereas pneumatic tires are better for outdoors.

You can, however, use pneumatic tires inside, especially if you want extra comfort for your operators.

7. Should you rent or buy your forklift?

If you need to use your forklift every day then purchasing a new or used forklift is your best choice.

If you only need your forklift for shorter busy seasons, then renting may be a better option.

Electric Forklift: Questions & Answers

1. How much does an electric forklift cost?

The price that you pay for your electric forklift will depend on the type, make, and capacity that you choose.

Electric pallet jacks can cost $2,500 to $7,000 + depending on the capacity and features.

Basic electric counterbalance forklifts can cost $20,00 to $45,000 and up depending on their capacity and features.

Lithium powered forklifts will usually cost more than lead-acid forklifts. However, your total cost of ownership will be lower with a lithium forklift because they last longer.

Here is a handy calculator that you can download for free to determine the total cost of ownership of each type of forklift.

If you are looking for the best quality electric forklift for the best price, then take a look at Hangcha. Their new electric forklifts are as good and often better than other top brands, but they are priced much lower.

An electric counterbalance forklift can cost $20,000 to $45,000 and up

2. What is the best electric forklift?

The best type of electric forklift is one that is powered by a lithium battery rather than a lead-acid one, for many reasons including:

  • Longer Lifespan: Lithium-ion batteries last much longer than lead-acid batteries. For example, lithium-ion forklifts manufactured by Hangcha can last up to 20,000 hours so if you use it 8 hours a day it will last 2,500 days.

  • No Battery Watering: Lithium batteries never need watering! However, if you have a lead-acid battery, you need to keep the right amount of water in it in order for it to work properly.

  • No Battery Cleaning: Lithium batteries never need cleaning or need to have their acid level checked. They are virtually maintenance-free.

  • Faster Charging Speeds: Lithium-ion forklift batteries can be fully charged in as little as 2 hours and don't need to cool down after charging. It can take 8 to 10 hours to charge a lead-acid battery plus another 8 hours for cooling.

For a complete list of why lithium is your best choice for an electric forklift, download the free PDF: "13 Reasons Why Every Forklift Fleet Should Be Switched to Lithium"

Lithium batteries are easy to maintain

3. How much power does an electric forklift have?

With the advancement of technology and the use of lithium-ion batteries, it is now possible to get electric forklifts that have the strength to handle heavier loads. You can now get models that have lifting capacities ranging from 4,000 lbs to 35,000 lbs.

However, the more lifting capacity a forklift has, the larger the forklift needs to be. Therefore, you should choose a model that will give you the best balance between power and size.

Some electric forklifts can lift up to 35,000 lbs.

4. Why are Some forklifts electric?

Two of the main reasons why there are electric forklifts are:

They’re safer:

Many industries need to use forklifts indoors, so electric forklifts are your safest option as they don't produce harmful emissions like fossil-fuel powered forklifts do.

They’re better for the environment:

Fewer emissions also means that electric forklifts are environmentally friendly. In addition, lithium-powered electric forklifts don't use acid, and they have twice the service life when compared to lead-acid powered electric forklifts, which means less waste.

Electric forklifts are also substantially more efficient when charging and discharging and are completely recyclable, making them even better for the environment.

Electric forklifts are safer to use inside and are better for the environment

5. What does lithium-ion mean?

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) is an "advanced battery technology that uses lithium ions as a key component of its electrochemistry." The electrodes inside a lithium-ion battery are made from lithium and carbon.

Because lithium is a highly reactive element, it is capable of storing a large amount of energy in its atomic bonds. This means that lithium-ion batteries have a very high energy density.

The following video explains the main differences between a lithium-ion battery and a lead acid battery.

Lithium is an advanced battery technology

6. Why choose an electric forklift over a propane or diesel one?

Indoor applications:

An electric forklift is your best choice if you need to use your forklift indoors as it doesn't give off harmful emissions. Propane forklifts can also be used indoors if you have the proper ventilation.

Working around food:

If you use your forklift around food products, then you will also want to choose an electric one because it won't produce harmful fumes that could contaminate your products.

On-board charging:

You may think that a propane or diesel forklift is a better choice because you can do consecutive shifts without having to stop to charge your forklift.

However, many of Hangcha’s lithium-ion forklifts are also equipped with onboard chargers, which means that you don’t have to stop working while your forklift is charging.

This feature will help you reduce downtimes and increase productivity.

Electric forklifts are safer for working aroung food

7. How long does it take to charge an electric forklift?

The time it takes to charge an electric forklift will depend on the type of battery you have. A lithium-ion battery can receive charge at a much higher rate than a lead-acid battery so their charge times are much quicker.

Lithium-ion forklift batteries can be fully charged in as little as 2 hours and don't need to cool down after charging. It can take 8 to 10 hours to charge a lead-acid battery plus another 8 hours to cool down.

Lithium batteries charge faster than lead-acid

8. Are electric forklifts cheaper to run than gas ones?

Yes. Even though electric forklifts cost more to purchase initially, their operating costs are much lower and they generally have a longer lifespan, which means you will have a lower total cost of ownership. The cost for fossil-fuels is much higher than the cost of electricity to charge your batteries.

Total Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric

Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric: Even though a propane forklift is cheaper to purchase than an electric one, the electric model will end up costing you much less over the time that you own it. Find out why.

An electric forklift could save you as much as $7,000 or more in operating costs over a 5-year period.

Check out the following chart to see the savings.

Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric

In our Total Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric article, we'll break down the total cost of purchasing and maintaining these two types of forklifts.

We have over 40 years in the forklift business, and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you so that you get the perfect forklift for your needs.

In our Total Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric article, will show you how even though a propane forklift is cheaper to purchase than an electric one, the electric model will end up costing you much less over the time that you own it. Let's show you why.

Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric

Electric forklifts have a much lower total cost of ownership than their propane counterparts. Let's take a closer look at the above example to prove our point.

Propane (LPG) forklifts have an internal combustion (IC) engine and will cost you much less to purchase new than a comparable electric one.

In our chart above, Forklift Operating Cost Propane vs Electric, the New Komatsu IC FG25ST (LPG) costs $23,000 to purchase where the New Komatsu Electric FB25SH cost $34,000 to purchase.

That's $11,000 more. However, the electric forklift will actually cost you $7,120 less to own and operate after only 5 years. How can that be?

Here's why.

An electric forklift will have a lower cost of ownership than a propane one

Electric Forklifts Cost Much Less to Operate

When you factor in both maintenance and fuel costs that you will incur over the time that you own your forklift, an electric one will actually cost you less.

Maintenance Costs

You will spend much less in maintenance costs for your electric forklift over a comparable propane model. We do the math below to show you how this is possible!

LPG Fuel (liquid petroleum gas):

On average, a propane forklift will cost you about $1.15 per hour that it’s in service to keep it properly maintained. Therefore, in our example where our forklifts are used for 120 hours per month, the cost to maintain the propane forklift would be about $138.

120 hours in service x $1.15 maintenance cost per hour = $138
per month

Electric Forklift:

On average, an electric forklift will cost about $0.90 per hour that it’s used to keep it properly maintained. So, if we look again at our example electric forklift that is used for 120 in a month, the total cost to maintain it would be $108.

120 hours in service x $0.90 maintenance cost per hour = $108
per month

An electric forklift will have lower monthly fuel and maintenance costs

Fuel Costs

You will spend much less in fuel costs for your electric forklift over a similar propane one. Let's take another look at our above example to discover why.

LPG Fuel (liquid petroleum gas):

Petroleum costs about $2.00 per gallon to purchase (prices fluctuate - for the current average price per city in Canada, click here).

Our propane forklift in the above example has an 8 gallon tank. After 120 hours of operation in a month, this forklift will go through about 20 tanks per month. Each tank of fuel will cost $16.00, so the total cost of fuel for this forklift will be $320.

20 tanks x $16.00 per tank = $320.00

Electric Battery: An average electric forklift battery will use 4 Kilowatts to charge it after each hour it is used.

The average cost of electricity is about $0.10 per Kilowatt hour. This forklift is used for 120 hours in one month. Therefore the cost to charge its batter each month would be about $48.00.

120 hours x 4 Kilowatts x $0.10 = $48.00

Therefore, your fuel costs to run an electric forklift will be about $272 less every month.

The above graph shows total maintenance, fuel and purchase price costs per month

Total Monthly Expenses

As you can see from the above graph and following chart, the electric forklift costs much less, $302 less, to operate per month than the propane unit.

Even when you factor in the higher purchase price of the electric unit, spread over 60 months, the electric forklift will still cost you $118.66 per month less than the propane one.

Spread over the entire 60 months of ownership, your savings will be an incredible $7,120. If you own your forklift longer than 60 months, your savings will be even greater!

An electric forklift will still cost you $118.66 per month less than a propane one

Here is a list of the top forklift rental frequently asked questions. Click on each question to discover the answer.

Top Forklift Rental FAQ

1. How much does it cost?

The price that you pay for a forklift rental will depend on the type of forklift you want and how long you are planning to rent it. A smaller capacity forklift will cost less than a larger capacity one.

Some forklift rental locations will offer you a large fleet discount if you are renting multiple units and they may also give you a reduced rate if your equipment is being serviced by them.

Forklifts that handle heavier capacities will cost more to rent

2. Why would you want to rent a forklift?

Here are a couple of good reasons why you would want to rent a forklift:

1. Your Equipment Is Being Serviced or Repaired: Renting equipment while yours is being serviced or repaired means that you won't suffer any downtime. Some forklift dealers will even offer you reduced rental rates if you are getting your forklifts serviced by them.

2. Cashflow Is Tight: Another reason why you might rent a forklift is if you don't have enough money to purchase one. A lower monthly payment might seem more affordable and suit your budget better.

It is a good idea, however, to compare what it would cost to purchase a new or used forklift from a company that offers financing.

This would also give you a regular monthly payment and it might be a better option as once your payments are done, you will own your forklift.

Renting is a great option when your forklift is getting serviced or repaired

3. When would you rent instead of buying?

There are a few situations where renting a forklift would be preferable to buying one:

1. Temporary Busy Season: Renting equipment during a temporary busy season is a good idea as it lets you get the extra equipment you need without having to invest in forklifts that will sit around idle for the rest of the year.

2. Test Out Equipment: Another great reason to rent is if you want to test out a new type of equipment before you buy it.

For example, maybe you think that investing in a reach truck would help to improve your productivity.

You could rent one for a few months to see if it does and then decide whether or not it would be worth purchasing one.

Renting will let you test out a type of equipment before you buy it

4. How long do you have to rent your forklift?

Some forklift rental companies will give you a choice of rental time. You can do short-term or long-term rentals including contracts that are:

  • Daily

  • Weekly

  • Monthly

If the company that you’re dealing with doesn't give you the option that you need, try another company. You don't want to have to rent a forklift for more time than you actually need it.

Get a forklift rental contract for the time the you
need it

5. Is there such a thing as rent to own?

Yes. Some forklift rental companies will have a rent-to-own option. This is a great alternative if you don't want or don't have the money to purchase a forklift just now.

When you rent to own, a portion of your rental payments will be used as payments towards the purchase of your equipment.

If your goal is to purchase a forklift eventually, get a price on how much it would cost to finance it with a monthly payment. You may be surprised at how little it could cost you.

For example, Hangcha makes high-quality forklifts at unbelievably low prices, In fact, they have the best prices in the industry, so you actually may find that financing a new Hangcha forklift would be a better value than opting for a rent-to-own one.

It's best to ask your forklift dealer about all of your options and have them choose the best one for you.

Financing a new Hangcha forklift could be a better value than doing a rent-to-own option

6. How can you get a better rental price?

Often if you need to rent more than one unit, your forklift dealer will give you a fleet discount.

If you are renting so that you can keep production going and avoid costly downtime while your forklift is being serviced, then take it to a forklift dealer that offers rental units that you can use at a reduced rate.

7. Who is responsible for maintenance?

Most forklift rental companies will be responsible for doing any maintenance on their equipment. It is a good idea to double check with the company that you are renting from though, to make sure that this is the case.

Not being responsible for the maintenance of your rental equipment is a great advantage of renting over owning as it removes that extra expense for you.

Forklift rental companies usually take care of any regular maintenance costs

8. What types of forklifts can you rent?

Most forklift rental dealers will offer you a selection of different forklifts in varying sizes and weight capacities. Some of the most common types of forklifts that you can rent include:

If they don't have the type of forklift you need, then shop around. You don't want to be stuck using a forklift that can't handle the weights that you need it to. This could be dangerous for your operators and harmful to the equipment.

You also don't want to be paying for a higher capacity forklift than you actually need. Rent your forklift from a reputable dealer that offers you a wide variety of forklifts

Rent from a dealer who has a wide variety of forklifts to get the one you need

9. Do forklift rental places deliver your forklift to you?

Some forklift rental places will offer you free delivery of your forklift to your location. They will also pick it up when your rental time is up.

Make sure that you verify with them that they do deliver and ask if it is free or if there is an additional charge for this service.

Follow these steps to reduce manufacturing costs

6 Steps to Reduce Manufacturing Costs

1. Reduce Forklift Operating Costs

Rent Temporary Forklifts:

You can reduce manufacturing costs by lowering your total overhead costs. Find ways that you can reduce big capital purchases, such as purchasing new forklifts.

For example, you may find that you can actually save money by renting additional material handling equipment during your peak seasons instead of purchasing extra equipment that you don't need to use all year long.

Invest in Electric Forklifts:

Whenever possible, choose an electric forklift over one that burns fossil fuels. Even though the initial purchasing cost can be higher with electric forklifts, your total cost of ownership is usually much less.

This total cost of ownership calculator can show you how much you could save by switching to an electric forklift.

large electric pneumatic forklift.jpg

PUrchase electric forklifts to save money

Choose a Lithium-Ion Battery:

If you want to save even more on your forklifts costs, choose an electric one that is powered by a lithium battery instead of a lead-acid one. Lithium batteries are virtually maintenance-free so you don't have to pay someone to water and maintain them and they don't require a lengthy cooling down time.

They are also 50% more energy-efficient than lead-acid batteries. Here’s another calculator that you can download to discover how much you could save using a lithium-powered forklift.

Automation:

You can reduce manufacturing costs by finding ways to automate processes and thereby producing products at a faster rate.

Invest in AGV (automated guided vehicle) forklifts that will efficiently operate without a paid operator. Automated forklifts can run as long as they are needed without taking breaks.

Check out this AGV forklift in action

2. Lower Your Cost for Materials

The materials that you use in the manufacturing of your product make up a large portion of your manufacturing costs. Here are a couple of ways to lower your cost for materials.

Use Economic Order Quantity (EOQ):

Economic Order Quantity is a formula that helps you figure out your optimal quantity of materials to order.

EOQ will enable you to only order the amount of materials that you actually need thus lowering the cost of placing and receiving an order. By using an EOQ you won't be tying up too much of your cash flow in inventory that you don't need yet.

Getting the right balance of materials to order is a skill, but the EOQ formula can help. The following video will show you how you can set up this formula in an Excel spreadsheet for easy calculations

Learn how to calculate the right amount of materials to order

Deal with the Best Raw Material Suppliers:

Another way that you can reduce manufacturing costs is by finding suppliers that will give you the best prices for the materials.

This doesn't mean buying inferior materials. Instead, you try to find suppliers of the quality of raw materials and ask them to give you a quote. You can then choose the one with the best material at the best price. You can also look for suppliers who offer a discount on bulk purchases.

In addition to local suppliers, you can also look online to find appropriate suppliers. Websites such as Alibaba, Global Sources, and eWorldTrade help suppliers and customers locate each other.

3. Encourage Higher Efficiency Rates from Your Staff

Encouraging higher efficiency from your workers is another area where you could reduce manufacturing costs. Here are some creative ways to get your staff to work more efficiently:

Give Proper Training: Provide specialized training that will teach your workers to work more efficiently.

Offer Great Incentives: Offer great incentives to your staff such as bonuses or time off to those who produce an average unit faster than the normal rate.

Provide Ergonomic Equipment: Provide ergonomically designed equipment and work areas that will help your workers to work better, longer, and with fewer injuries.

Encourage Innovation: Reward employees who figure out any cost-reducing techniques in production and use their ideas.

keep-employees-happy.jpg

Provide your employees with ergonomically designed equipment

4. Reduce Accidents and Loss

Reduce Accidents:

Accidents and injuries can add to your manufacturing costs. Not only do you want your staff to be safe, but you also don't want to have to pay for the downtime and product damage caused by avoidable accidents.

Providing proper safety training for your staff and proper safety equipment around your facility can help to decrease the number and severity of workplace accidents.

Reduce Loss:

You can lose inventory either by misplacing it or by theft. Make sure that you employ a clear labelling and storage procedure to ensure that your materials and products don't get misplaced.

To prevent theft:

  • Hire security staff to check out employees and visitors entering and leaving your facility,

  • Keep your doors locked and put in a key card system.

  • Install a security system

  • If you are not running around the clock, employ a security guard during off-hours.

The following video explains how a key card system works.

A key card system can help reduce manufacturing costs

5. Cut Down on Waste

As a plant manager, you need to conduct periodic checks to find out what is causing excess waste and develop an effective plan to reduce the waste. Here are some different kinds of waste in a manufacturing setting that you could try and avoid:

Producing Too Soon: Producing products before they are needed means you are tying up your cash flow and your product could get damaged while it is being stored.

Overstocking: Overstocking your inventory with more products than you need also ties up your cash flow.

Production Delays: Production delays that make your staff and machinery wait around during the manufacturing cycle wastes time and money.

Unnecessary Movement: Moving people and products around unnecessarily wastes time and resources.

Defects: Defective products that need to be repaired while still under warranty wastes time and resources as well.

worker-safety.jpg

Production delays waste time and money.

6. Reduce Forklift Downtime

Reducing forklift downtime can help you reduce manufacturing costs. Here are some ways to cut down on forklift downtime.

Keep Your Equipment Maintained:

One of the best ways to reduce forklift downtimes is to make sure that your equipment is well maintained. You should follow the manufacturer's guidelines for regular maintenance and get any small issues repaired as soon as they come up.

Keeping your forklifts properly maintained and serviced will go a long way in preventing huge repair bills or having to replace damaged equipment. Regular maintenance can catch a small problem and get it fixed before it becomes a larger, much more costly one.

Rent Temporary Forklifts:

While your forklifts are being serviced or repaired, temporarily rent others so you don't have to stop working. A reputable forklift dealer will provide you with rental units at discounted rates while they are servicing them.

Use Onboard Chargers:

You can also use forklifts with onboard chargers so that they don't need to be out of service for charging times. In addition, purchase forklifts with faster charger times such as lithium-ion forklifts. They can fully charge in as little as 2 hours compared to a lead-acid battery which takes 8-10 hours.

Follow these helpful steps to reduce warehouse operating costs

How to Reduce Warehouse Operating Costs

Step 1. Reduce Forklift Operating Costs

Your Forklifts play an important part in operating your warehouse, however, they can also eat up a sizable chunk of your operating budget. Here are some ways in which you can reduce your forklift operating costs.

Invest in electric forklifts:

Whenever possible, choose an electric forklift over one that burns fossil fuels. Even though the initial purchasing cost can be higher with electric forklifts, your total cost of ownership is usually much less.

This total cost of ownership calculator can show you how much you could save by switching to an electric forklift.

electric-counterbalance.png

An electric forklift will cost less over the time that you own it

Choose a lithium-ion battery over a lead-acid one:

If you want to save even more on your forklifts costs, choose an electric one that is powered by a lithium battery instead of a lead-acid one. Lithium batteries are virtually maintenance-free so you don't have to pay someone to water and maintain them and they don't require a lengthy cooling down time.

They are also 50% more energy-efficient than lead-acid batteries. Here’s another calculator that you can download to discover how much you could save using a lithium-powered forklift.

Lithium batteries don’t need to cool down after they are charged

Choose the Right Type of Forklift:

Choosing the right type of equipment can greatly increase your efficiency. For example, investing in a double pallet stacker can allow you to handle two pallets at the same time or investing in a reach stacker can allow you to make the most of your warehouse space by being able to install higher shelving.

You could also invest in AGV (automated guided vehicle) forklifts that will efficiently operate without a paid operator. Automated forklifts can run as long as they are needed without taking breaks.

Step 2. Prioritize Employee Retention

Controlling employee costs is another great way for you to reduce warehouse operating costs. One often-overlooked way to reduce employee costs is to make sure that you keep your employees happy and don't lose them.

It actually costs more to hire and train a new employee than it does to keep paying an experienced employee. On average, it could cost you as much as 6 to 9 months of salary to replace a salaried employee, so keeping your employees happy can save you considerably.

Some ways that you can promote employee retention include:

  • Offer a good benefits program

  • Foster a healthy environment that listens to employee feedback

  • Conduct exit interviews and act on issues that come up

Reduce warehouse operating costs by focusing on employee retention

Step 3. Optimize Your Space

Space is very expensive so you want to be able to store as much product in as little space as possible.

Keep your aisle widths smaller by using narrow aisle material handling equipment. Store your inventory according to size, so you can reduce the aisle dimensions of inefficient aisles.

Keep your aisles as narrow and tall as possible for maximum storage space, making sure that you have the right type of racking for safety.

order-pickers2.jpg

Maximize your warehouse space with narrow aisles and high shelving

Step 4. Keep Your Inventory Safe from Loss and Damage

Inventory Loss:

You can lose inventory either by misplacing it or by theft. Make sure that you employ a clear labelling and storage procedure to ensure that your products don't get misplaced.

Using technologies such as Radio Frequency (RF), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Warehouse Management System (WMS), Voice Directed Picking (VDP), and Pick to Light (PTL) can help you keep track of your inventory.

To prevent theft, hire security to check out employees and visitors entering and leaving your facility, keep your doors locked, and put in a key card system. You can also install a security system and if you are not running around the clock, you could employ a security guard during off-hours.

Inventory Damage:

To keep your products safe from damage, make sure they are properly packaged and train your employees on safe handling practices as well as forklift safety practices.

Use a clear labelling and storage procedure to ensure that your products don't get misplaced

Step 5. Cut Down on Energy Costs

Energy costs can also add up quickly. Here are some energy-saving tips that you can implement to help reduce warehouse operating costs.

  • Install additional windows to let in lots of natural light, thus reducing your need for extra interior lighting. The light can also help to heat up your space in winter.

  • Reduce your water use by installing automatic flush low-flow toilets and hands-free faucets.

  • Make sure your warehouse is properly insulated

  • Install an automated lighting system

Use natural and automated lighting to reduce energy costs

Step 6. Reduce Forklift Downtime

One of the best ways to reduce forklift downtimes is to make sure that they are well maintained. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for regular maintenance and get any small issues repaired as soon as they come up.

While your forklifts are being serviced or repaired, temporarily rent others so you don't have to stop working. Reputable forklift dealers will provide you with rental units at discounted rates while they are servicing them

You can also use forklifts with onboard chargers so that they don't need to be out of service for charging times.

Purchase forklifts with faster charger times such as lithium-ion forklifts. They can fully charge in as little as 2 hours compared to a lead-acid battery which takes 8-10 hours.

Heavy duty forklifts can handle extremely heavy loads

Heavy Duty Forklift Information

1. What Is a Heavy Duty Forklift?

A heavy duty forklift has a similar function to a regular warehouse forklift, however, it is capable of lifting much heavier loads. In addition, it can lift its loads much higher off the ground than a regular warehouse forklift.

Heavy duty forklifts can be 10 ft or more in length and they almost always have an internal combustion engine, giving them more power. However, with the development of lithium battery technology, you can also purchase electric heavy duty forklifts that can handle loads of 25,000 to 35,000 lbs.

Heavy duty forklifts are also referred to as:

  • Industrial forklifts

  • Large capacity forklifts

  • High capacity forklifts

  • Heavy forklift trucks

You can now purchase electric heavy duty forklifts that can handle loads of 25,000 t0 35,000 lbs.

2. Industries that Typically Require a Heavy Duty Forklift

Here are some of the most common industries that use heavy duty forklifts due to the weight of the materials that they handle:

  • Automotive manufacturers

  • General manufacturing

  • Oil and gas production

  • Wind power

  • Nuclear energy stations

  • Shipyards and Railways

  • Marinas

  • Construction companies

  • Mining companies

  • Pulp and paper industry

  • Steel and aluminum producers

  • Farms

3. Why Are Load Capacity and Lifting Height Important?

Load Capacity:

There are a wide range of load capacities when it comes to forklifts. Load capacity refers to the maximum weight that a forklift can safely lift.

It is a good idea to choose a forklift that has a lifting capacity that is greater than you think you are going to need so that you aren't caught in a situation where your safety is at risk. If a forklift carries more than its maximum lifting capacity then it can become unstable.

For example, if most of the loads that you transport are around 20,000 lbs, but you may at times need to lift a load that is 30,000 lbs, then it is better to choose a forklift that can handle 30,000 lbs.

Lifting Height:

Lifting height refers to the vertical distance that a forklift’s mast can raise its loads. Different forklift models have different load lifting heights. You want to make sure that your forklift is going to be able to lift your loads to the height that you require.

You should figure out how high you need your loads lifted before choosing your forklift. Measure your worksite and get a forklift that can reach that high.

Choose a forklift that can safely lift the loads you need to lift

4. Heavy Duty Forklift Attachments

If you want to increase your heavy duty forklift's capabilities and flexibility, you can purchase special attachments such as:

Booms: give your forklift the ability to lift from above instead of below

Clamps: enable your forklift to move oddly shaped items safely

Fork extensions: allow you to lift larger loads

If you are looking for special attachments that will increase your forklift’s capabilities, contact us.

5. Pros and Cons of Buying New or Used

If you are looking to purchase a heavy duty forklift, you might be wondering if it is better to go with a new or used model.

Used Heavy Duty Forklifts:

If money is tight, then buying a quality used heavy duty forklift is your best option. The great thing about heavy duty forklifts is that they are durable and they generally last longer than lighter forklifts.

Make sure that you go to a dealer that has a good reputation for quality used forklifts and make sure that they offer you a warranty so that you can purchase with confidence.

An example of a great used vehicle warranty is a 30-day full warranty that covers your forklift, front to back, for a full 30 days after your purchase. If anything goes wrong with it, the dealer will fix it for you, free of charge.

Another great way to ensure that you are getting a quality used forklift is to purchase from a dealer that certifies their equipment. Certifying means that they have thoroughly checked over the forklift to make sure that it is in great condition before they sell it to you. Certification helps you know that you are getting the best quality equipment possible.

Buying used can be a wise investment. Just like a brand new car, the moment you drive your new forklift off the lot, it loses value. Quality used forklifts depreciate at a much slower rate so they are often the better choice.

Purchase your used forklift from a dealer with a good reputation

New Heavy Duty Forklifts:

The biggest disadvantage of purchasing a new heavy duty forklift is the price. However, some new forklifts, such as those manufactured by Hangcha, are priced significantly lower than other new forklifts.

You will not only be getting one of the highest quality trucks available but you will be surprised at how incredibly low they are priced.

In fact, their prices are so amazing that it often is a better deal to buy one of their new models than a pre-owned model from another manufacturer.

An automated forklift is a type of automated guided vehicle (AGV) that can carry loads along the floor of your facility without having a driver onboard. Learn more.

There are several advantages as well as disadvantages to using automated forklifts. Click on each link below to learn more.

If you are looking for an automated forklift, contact Forklift Hub today.

AGV-forklifts.png

There are many pros and cons to using an automated forklift

What Is an Automated Forklift?

Instead of being driven by an operator, an automated forklift is controlled by a computer. Automated forklifts use a combination of sensor-based guidance systems and computer software to control their movement.

Automated forklifts are like portable robots on wheels. They are used in industries to transport heavy loads around buildings like factories or warehouses. They can also be used to tow objects like trailers filled with materials and finished products. They can then be unattached from the trailers and move on their own.

Automated forklifts can be used to tow trailers

Advantages of an Automated Forklift

Lower Operating Costs:

An automated forklift runs on its own, so you don't need to pay a driver to operate it and you don't need to pay for the driver to be trained.

24/7 Operation:

An automated forklift can also run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It doesn't need to take lunches or coffee breaks, making it incredibly efficient.

Pick up Unpalletized Loads:

An automated forklift that has a side clamp is able to pick up loads that aren't stored on pallets.

Limited Clearance:

Automated forklifts can safely maneuver down aisles that have limited clearance and that would be difficult for a human driver to navigate safely.

Because they don't need to have the space to accommodate a driver, they can be made smaller than regular forklifts.

This would make them a great choice for working in tight spaces.

Labour Shortages:

Reliable, permanent, and seasonal workers are sometimes difficult to find and afford. If you are having trouble filling positions due to labour shortages, then investing in automated forklifts could be your best answer.

AGV's are great for doing repetitive, low-value tasks that are difficult to hire a worker to do for you.

Disadvantages of an Automated Forklift

High Purchase Cost:

The biggest disadvantage of purchasing an automated forklift is the high price tag. However, you need to take into consideration your total cost of ownership when deciding whether or not it is a good investment.

The fact that you don't need to pay an operator and that it can run 24/7 will decrease your total cost of ownership and make it a much more attractive option.

Check out an automated forklift in action

High Maintenance Cost:

If your automated forklift breaks down, it will probably cost more to repair as you will need to take it to a highly skilled mechanic who is properly trained.

In addition, replacement parts will also be higher than traditional forklift parts. However, as this technology becomes more common, the cost of parts and repairs should decrease.

Flexibility:

In order to change the route that you want your automated forklift to take, you will have to reprogram it which could take some time. If you are using a regular forklift, your driver can quickly change routes as soon as they are told.

agv-heavy-load.jpg

Automated Forklift Usages

There are many ways that you can use an automated forklift. Here are some of the more common ones:

  • Pulling trailers or carts with heavy loads on flat ground or ramps

  • Transporting loaded pallets over long distances for put-aways, load staging, and cross-docking

  • Pick-up and drop off, end-of-aisle, end-of-line, and conveyor picking applications

  • Automatically stack and take away empty pallets

Why Choose a Hangcha Automated Forklift?

If you want a forklift that is as cutting edge as your industry, then choose an automated forklift from Hangcha. They are made for industrial use and they use advanced AGV automation technologies.

Hangcha AGV based intelligent logistic systems have been used in a wide variety of industries including:

  • Automotive

HIGH POSITIONING ACCURACY:

Accuracy is a key consideration when you are looking to use automation in your industry. Hangcha's heavy-load AGV has an incredible positioning accuracy of ±5mm. It can also stack and take away empty pallets automatically to help increase your efficiency.

UNMANNED OPERATION:

This AGV model has great features that will give you genuine unmanned operation including:

If you are considering making a forklift lifting capacity modification, here are some things to consider. Click on the links to learn more.

1. Legally, any forklift lifting capacity modification needs to be approved by the forklift manufacturer. Learn more.

2. Every forklift is designed with a specific lifting capacity and exceeding that capacity can have dangerous consequences. Learn more.

3. Forklift Lifting Capacity Modification: What You Need to Know

1. Legally any forklift Lifting Capacity Modification Needs to Be Approved by the Forklift Manufacturer

According to Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.S.O, section 7, if you want to make any forklift lifting capacity modifications, it needs to be approved by your forklift's manufacturer.

Any alteration that you make to your forklift that could affect its rated capacity or compromise the safety of your operators has to be approved by the manufacturer in advance.

If you are unsure about whether or not an alteration is okay or not, it is best to consult with a qualified forklift truck professional who can help you make that decision. In addition, any modification that you make needs to be done by a qualified engineer.

forklift-inspection.jpg

Any forklift lifting capacity modification needs to be done by a qualified professional

2. Every forklift is designed with a specific lifting capacity and exceeding that capacity can have dangerous consequences

Forklifts are designed with a maximum lifting capacity and if you attempt to lift a load that is heavier than the maximum amount, you could have serious and even fatal consequences. Learn more about forklift safety in our free downloadable eBook.

Dangers of Modifying Forks:

For example, an inexperienced mechanic might try to modify the forks on a forklift by adding load-bearing chains to the tips so that they can handle heavier loads. If they drill holes through the fork tips to hold the chains, then the structural integrity of the forks will be permanently compromised.

This is because drilling a hole removes the load-bearing material of the fork. Having holes drilled in your forks will modify your forklift’s lifting capacity, however, it will be difficult to determine what that capacity actually is now.

It’s not a good idea to modify the forks on your forklift

Dangers of Modifying the counterweight:

Another dangerous forklift lifting capacity modification that is sometimes attempted is to try and increase the size of the forklift's counterweight so that it can lift more without tipping over.

This too is a dangerous modification because the counterweight plays a very important role in keeping your forklift stable. If you change the weight or the size of your counterweight, then you will also be altering the center of gravity of your forklift.

This means that making a simple turn or doing a low lift could shift the center of gravity and cause your forklift to easily tip over endangering your driver, any workers in the vicinity and your load.

electric-counterbalance.png

Trying to increase your forklift’s counterweight can make it dangerously unstable

3. Alternatives to Making Forklift Lifting Capacity Modifications

Contact a Professional:

Instead of modifying your existing equipment and risking the safety of your workers, contact a professional who could advise you about which forklift attachments and accessories can safely be added to your current equipment. It is also a good idea to have a professional do the installation for you.

Rent Equipment:

If you only need to have a modification for a one-time load or for a short period, then consider renting the equipment you need instead of modifying your current equipment. You can rent material handling equipment that is designed for the lifting that you need for both short and longer-term periods.

For example, Wayco offers daily, weekly, and monthly contracts for renting a vast array of forklifts for both indoor and outdoor use with lifting capacities from 3,000 to 80,000 lbs, at highly competitive rates. We'll even deliver it to your location and offer you our rent-to-own program if you decide that you need the equipment permanently.

forklift rental waterloo.png

You can rent equipment with the right lifting capacity

Purchase the Right Equipment:

If you need a forklift that can handle heavier loads than your current equipment, instead of doing a forklift lifting capacity modification, you should consider trading in your current forklift for one that has a higher capacity.

For example, at Wayco we take trade-ins and we have a large selection of quality pre-owned forklifts that you can choose from. Our pre-owned trucks have a great 30-day warranty and we also offer financing on both our new and used forklifts.

In addition, you could also consider purchasing a new forklift. Depending on the brand that you choose, you may find that purchasing a new forklift will give you better equipment that will last longer for you than buying used.

For example, our Hangcha forklifts are priced significantly lower than other brands yet they are just as good, if not better than other brands. Often it makes more sense to purchase a new Hangcha forklift than another pre-owned model.

What are the Best Forklifts for the Retail Industry?

The retail industry has some very unique challenges when it comes to moving products quickly and efficiently. Limited space is one of the biggest concerns.

Read on to find out which forklifts can help you keep your products moving at the speed required to ensure success.

1. Best Forklifts for the Retail Industry on Your Sales floor - Electric Walkie Pallet Jacks

pallet-jacks.jpg

Electric walkies will work well on your sales floor

Electric walkie pallet jacks are your best choice for use on your sales floor. You can easily use walkies to move your stock from your backroom to your sales floor with minimal disruption to your customers.

Walkies work well in a retail setting because they are smaller and can maneuver around the tighter spaces in your store. They are also narrow enough so that your customers will not be bothered by them if you need to put out merchandise during opening hours.

They will also help your staff be more efficient as you can move larger, heavier boxes back and forth at one time instead of having to carry small loads of product by hand.

The handles help you control the speed, steering and lifting and because you are walking, it is not going fast enough to be a safety issue for customers or other staff.

2. Best Forklifts for the Retail Industry In Your BackRoom - Electric Walkie Pallet Jacks and Stackers

pallet.jpg
walkie-pallet-jack.jpg

Best forklifts for the retail industry: Pallet jacks do the heavy work for you

Walkies and stackers are the best forklift type for the retail industry backroom setting. Most backrooms are notoriously small and crowded, so you need to choose a forklift that will work well in this type of situation.

You can easily use walkies and stackers to move your stock onto both lower and higher-level shelving. Choosing an electric model as opposed to a manual one will make this job much easier and more efficient for your staff as your forklift will do all the heavy lifting for you.

Walkies are also highly maneuverable, making them easy to navigate around the tight corners and aisles in your backroom.

Stackers are one of the best forklifts for the retail industry

3. Best Forklifts for the Retail Industry In a Small Warehouse: 3-Wheel Electric Counterbalance Forklifts & Reach Trucks

If you have a small warehouse for your retail business then a 3-wheel electric counterbalance forklift would be a good option. 3-wheel forklifts are more maneuverable and require less space to operate than 4-wheel forklifts.

Due to their slender, 3-wheeled design, they have a much tighter turning radius than a traditional 4-wheel forklift.

In addition, you can choose a stand-up version that has the operator stand up instead of sitting in a cab. Doing away with seating means that the dimensions of this type of forklift are even smaller, making it great for fitting into tighter spaces.

If you have a smaller warehouse with elevated storage areas, you will usually require a forklift that is designed to lift to higher heights. A reach truck is designed to reach higher than traditional forklifts so it is perfect if you have tight, high spaces to reach in your warehouse.

reach-truck.jpg

Reach trucks are one of the best forklifts for the retail industry in tight spaces

4. Best Forklifts for the Retail Industry In a Larger Warehouse: 4-Wheel Electric Counterbalance Forklifts

If you are retailing heavier products and require more lifting capacity for your forklift, then a 4-wheel electric counterbalance forklift is a great choice.

With the advancement of technology and the use of lithium-ion batteries, it is now possible to get electric forklifts that have the strength to handle heavier loads. You can now get models that have lifting capacities ranging from 4,000 to 35,000 lbs.

However, the more lifting capacity a forklift has, the larger the forklift needs to be, so you should choose a model that will give you the best balance between power and size.

A 4-wheel electric forklift is great for larger warehouses

5. Best Forklifts for the Retail Industry For Online Businesses - Order pickers

order-pickers.jpg

One of the best forklifts for the retail industry is an order picker

Online retail business is growing rapidly and the competition is fierce. If you run an online business, you know how important it is to get your customers' orders processed and sent to them as soon as possible. That is where order pickers can help.

Order pickers can lift workers and loads to high locations to select the products you need quickly and efficiently. They make it possible for you to maximize the space in your warehouse, by giving your staff safe and easy access to your higher shelving.

What Are the Best Forklifts for the Meat Processing Industry?

Today we are going to take a look at what types of forklifts are the best for the meat processing industry. If you are handling meat, then you have unique challenges to overcome, such as:

  • The need to have incredibly fast turnarounds to prevent your meat from spoiling

  • The need to do frequent wash-downs to make sure that your facility meets health regulations

  • Working in a cold storage environment to preserve your meat

When choosing the best forklift for the meat processing industry and the one that suits your needs best, it is important to make sure that the equipment you choose will be able to withstand the conditions outlined above.

Here are some great options and why they would make a good choice.

1. Why Walkie Pallet Jacks Are One of the Best Forklifts for the meat processing Industry

Transporting Plastic Pallets and boxes in tight spaces:

Plastic pallets and boxes are almost always used when handling meat instead of wood because they cannot nest bacteria and/or parasites that could contaminate the meat. Walkie pallet jacks are a great choice for transporting these plastic pallets from one location to another in your facility.

Pallet jacks are a great solution if you need to move and stack pallets full of meat in smaller spaces such as inside walk-in refrigerators or freezers.

A small walkie pallet jack can handle the full weight of your skids and they are easy to maneuver in tight spaces.

Fast Turnaround Times:

When you are working with meat, you need to make sure that your turnaround times are as fast as possible, as it is perishable. You also want to make sure that you can transport it quickly to refrigerated areas to keep it from spoiling.

Investing in a double pallet jack will enable you to handle twice as many pallets in the same amount of time, thus increasing your efficiency and decreasing your turnaround times.

Double pallet jacks will let you handle twice as many pallets

No harmful fumes:

Pallet jacks are electric-powered which means that they don't give off harmful fumes which can easily contaminate meat and be harmful to workers in enclosed spaces.

Loading and Unloading Deliveries:

Another great benefit of pallet jacks is that they are great for unloading and loading deliveries from a truck. Time is of the essence, especially on warm summer days, to get your product off of the delivery trucks and to your refrigerated areas.

Pallet jacks can help you move your foodstuffs quickly to keep them from spoiling

2. Why Rider Pallet Jacks Are One of the Best Forklifts for the meat processing Industry

rider-pallet-jack.jpg

Rider Pallet Jacks

Greater efficiency:

Rider pallet jacks have all of the great benefits of a walkie pallet jack, however, they have the added advantage of allowing the operator to ride on the back of the truck, thus increasing their comfort and productivity.

If you are working in the meat industry, you understand that time is money, especially as meat has a relatively short shelf life. Therefore, choosing material handling equipment that is going to speed up your processes is very important to the success of your business.

Rider pallets still have a relatively small design so they can work well in tight spaces.

Rider pallet jacks can help increase your efficiency

Fuel Source:

Rider pallet jacks are electric, which makes them the perfect choice for operating indoors and around food as they don't give off harmful fumes. If you choose one with an onboard charger, then you can also greatly reduce any downtime for recharging your battery.

3. Why Electric Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the meat processing Industry

Electric forklifts don’t give off fumes that could contaminate meat

safe Fuel Source:

As stated before, you need to be careful that you don’t produce harmful fumes around meat.

If you choose an electric forklift instead of one that is fueled by propane or diesel, you will not have to worry about harmful emissions contaminating your food or harming your workers and customers.

Limited Space:

If you require a larger forklift for your purposes, but space is tight in your meat-processing facility, you can choose a 3-wheel forklift.

Doing away with seating means that the dimensions of this forklift are even smaller, making it great for fitting into tighter spaces.

4. Why Lithium-ion Electric Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the meat processing Industry

Fast Turnaround Times:

As stated, it is important to make sure that the equipment you choose for your meat processing facility is going to give you the fastest turnaround times possible.

If you choose an electric forklift that has a lithium-ion battery, then your charging times are much faster (2 hours vs 8-10 hours for a lead-acid battery forklift).

In addition, your maintenance will be much less complicated than if you purchase a lead-acid battery electric forklift as they need to be watered and more carefully looked after. You will also save on the space required for a forklift battery charging station.

Many of Hangcha’s lithium-ion forklifts are also equipped with onboard chargers which means that you don’t have to stop working while your forklift is charging. This feature will help you reduce downtimes and increase productivity.

Li-ion batteries charge much faster than lead-acid batteries

Heavy Lifting Capabilities:

If you need more lifting capacity for your forklift, then a lithium-powered electric counterbalance is a great choice. You can get models that have lifting capacities ranging from 4,000 to 35,000 lbs.

However, the more lifting capacity a forklift has, the larger the forklift will be, so you should choose a model that will give you the best balance between power and size.

Food-safe Fuel Source:

In the past, in order to get a forklift with higher lifting capacities, you would need to purchase one with an internal combustion engine that would burn fossil fuels like propane or diesel.

Your only choice then for inside applications would have been a propane fuel forklift because it burns cleaner than diesel and can be used indoors as long as you have proper ventilation to counteract any emissions.

However, with the advancement of technology and the use of lithium-ion batteries, it is now possible to get electric forklifts that are safe to use inside and have the strength to handle heavier loads.

Able to withstand Constant washdowns:

If you are working in the meat processing industry, you know that you are required to be constantly washing down and cleaning your facilities. This means that your equipment needs to be able to withstand these very moist conditions. Not all electric forklifts are able to handle wet conditions. You’ll need to choose an electric model that can work in wet and cold conditions.

Hangcha's XC Series electric forklift, for example, uses lithium-ion power and has been designed with an IPX4 water resistance rating, making it resistant to water splashes from any direction. Therefore, it is suitable for a meat processing plant.

Furthermore, if you need your forklift to unload trucks outside of your facility and then bring them inside, then an electric forklift that is water-resistant is a great choice as you can’t guarantee the weather outside.

choose an electric forklift that is also water resistant

*Tip: cushion tires are best for tight spaces

Make sure you also choose an electric forklift that has cushion tires. Cushion tires are smaller than pneumatic tires, which means that your forklift will be lower to the ground, thus decreasing its turning radius even further. In addition, cushion tires are better suited for indoor flooring as well.

Why Reach Trucks Are One of the Best Forklifts for the food manufacturing Industry

High Reaching Capabilities:

Most food manufacturing locations have limited storage space and often have shelving that is higher than traditional forklifts are able to reach.

Reach trucks are the perfect choice for these situations as they are specially designed with small spaces and high shelving in mind. A reach truck will be able to quickly access the products that you need, when you need them.

Lifting Capacities:

Reach trucks usually have lifting capacities of 2,500lbs to 5,000 lbs. This is helpful as skids of food and beverages can be very heavy so you need equipment that can lift heavy loads up to greater heights.

Roof and rack heights vary among different food manufacturing facilities. Make sure that you purchase a forklift that can reach high enough to accommodate for your highest racking.

Reach trucks can access mich higher products than an ordinary forklift

Accessibility and Speed:

If you are working in the food industry, you understand that time is money, especially as your products will often have a relatively short shelf life. Therefore, choosing material handling equipment that is going to speed up your processes is very important to the success of your business.

IF YOU CHARGED IT CORRECTLY AND IT IS STILL NOT HOLDING A CHARGE YOU NEED SOMEBODY TO COME AND INSPECT THE BATTERY TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. CONTACT US VIA THE BUTTON BELOW TO HAVE US COME CHECK ON IT TODAY!

Did you know that a forklift battery is like a rechargeable battery; it has a finite lifespan! Chances are your battery is going to give you problems at some point in time. Your battery lifespan depends on you and your application.

The frequency and amount of use in which the battery has been charged will impact the lifespan and will help you get the most out of your investment. There are many ways a battery can fail, that can be catastrophic or unrecoverable. If your forklift battery is no longer holding charge, Get in Touch with ForkliftHub for servicing. We provide a forklift BATTERY CARE program.

battery not holding charge?

Forklift batteries are much the same as the lead acid batteries seen in cars, although forklift batteries are a lot heavier, larger and more difficult to repair or refurbish. Forklift batteries are deep-cycle batteries and for this reason they can be discharged to lower levels without causing damage.

There are a number of steps that are very important to get the most life out of your battery, like cleaning, replacing fluids and removing sulfation. These can be done by the worker but refurbishing the battery is best left for a professional who has experience.

Other Common Problems Associated with a Forklift Battery

Forklift batteries are very expensive and are often replaced far too soon because of improper care and neglect. Below is a list of common problems associated with forklift batteries that occur over time.

2. Short Circuit

A common type of short circuit occurs when the positive and negative terminals of a battery are connected with a low-resistance conductor, like a wire. With a low resistance in the connection, a high current will flow, causing the delivery of a large amount of energy in a short period of time.

A “shorted” lead acid battery has the capability of delivering an extremely high current, 100 to 1000 times the typical discharge current used in most applications. The following are signs that your forklift battery has a short circuit.

  • Very low cell voltage and specific gravity during recharging and discharging

  • Low gassing while charging

  • Extreme rise of electrolyte temperature during the charging phase

  • Fast drop of gravity after charging

3. Sulfation

Sulfation, a build-up of lead sulphate crystals, is the number one cause of early failures of lead-acid, sealed AGM or flooded (wet cell-filler caps) batteries. Sulfation is the accumulation of a crystalline form of lead sulphate on the plates of lead–acid storage batteries.

sulphated battery can lead to loss of cranking power or longer charging times. Sulfation can be avoided if the battery is fully recharged immediately after a discharge cycle.

The lead sulphate crystals are broken down (more or less successfully) in the charge cycle. Sometimes some crystals remain, or sometimes a battery is left partially discharged where the crystals of lead sulphate harden and reduce the capacity of the battery to be charged. This is what desulfation is about.

  • While charging, the voltage and electrolyte temperature are much higher than the standard

  • Gassing is accelerated from charging and the gravity does not rise to normal

  • Voltage drops quickly while discharging

  • In some extreme cases, plates may become whitened

4. Excessive self discharging

Selfdischarge is a phenomenon in batteries in which internal chemical reactions reduce the stored charge of the forklift battery without any connection between the electrodes.

Selfdischarge decreases the shelf life of batteries and causes them to initially have less than a full charge when actually put to use. Self-discharge is caused by improper handling. Self-discharge can be thought of as energy leaking from your battery which leaks about 5% of capacity per month.

At higher temperatures, the rate typically doubles, so store batteries in a cool place when possible. Remember to always wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when working on batteries.

  • A quick drop in gravity after charging

  • The charging capacity of the battery significantly reduced

Important Forklift Battery Facts

An important part of keeping your warehouse operations running smoothly is proper maintenance of your forklift batteries. When a lift truck battery is down, that usually means one of your forklifts is down and you are losing productivity. First here are some facts about forklift batteries:

  • A maintained, fully charged battery will provide about six hours of use, equal to an eight-hour shift with breaks included.

  • Batteries have a lifespan of approximately 1,500 cycles lasting up to 5 years. Each charge takes a cycle out of a battery.

  • Mismatched batteries and chargers can cause major damage to the battery and the forklift.

  • Batteries must have adequate water. Typically, they need water added after five to ten charges, and only after they have been fully charged, to prevent a boilover.

  • “Remember, the battery is the fuel tank of the forklift. Look after it and it will look after you.”

Proper Battery Care

This video shares some tips on how to get the most life out of your battery and the do’s and don’ts when handling your battery and charger.

Battery maintenance is an extremely forgotten yet important factor; as knowing a little about forklift maintenance will go a long way. Proper battery care and watering can help extend the life of your industrial battery.

Every day large, heavy and expensive batteries power electric forklifts and inevitably need to be recharged. Waiting too long or making the wrong connection can cost your organization time and money.

Let ForkliftHub keep track of your maintenance so it is done on time. To get the most out of your investment, machine operators should know and practice the proper care and maintenance of forklift batteries. Here are seven simple tips for proper battery maintenance:

  1. Keep the battery dry, clean, and free from corrosion

  2. Check that the battery charger cables are not damaged or showing heat damage.

  3. Keep flames and metal away from the battery top

  4. Keep vent caps tightly in place

  5. Maintain proper water level (about one-half inch below the battery cap opening)

  6. Add water only after the charge cycle. Add approved water only— never add acid

  7. Set up a watering schedule either weekly or bi-monthly to ensure proper water levels

  8. Avoid charging during break times and lunch breaks because each time you connect the battery to a charger, it uses one of its life cycles

  9. Inspect for any defects or malfunctions, and have your battery service provider repair them as needed

  10.  Wash and service your battery semi-annually to help control acid and corrosion

Remember to check the fluid level approximately every five charge cycles, be sure to check the forklift battery fluid levels by opening up the battery.

Charging and Recharging

An electric forklift is designed to operate for one shift and then be charged on the next shift, overnight or if it is discharged more than 30%. It is up to the user to ensure that proper charging occurs so the battery performs as it was designed to.

Charging an electric forklift battery is not complicated; it just requires safety precautions and a consistent, orderly process. Properly charging a battery is all about doing it at the right time and for the right amount of time. Use these tips when charging your forklift battery:

  1. Have a specific designated area for battery charging. Always charge a battery in a well-ventilated area

  2. Keeping a battery water log will help support a warranty claim.

  3. Battery should be at 80% depth of discharge before charging; charging prior to the 80% can reduce battery life

  4. If the battery overflows, rinse overflow will help prevent corrosion

  5. Ensure the charger matches the voltage and amperage of the battery.

  6. Avoid overcharging the battery which can reduce the battery life

  7. Charge in proper temperature, extreme cold and heat can reduce service life

  8. After charging cycle add water if needed. Use distilled or pure water to bring the electrolytes to the proper level. Equalize batteries regularly.

  9. Never interrupt a charge cycle if it is unnecessary. It is suggested that once a charge has started, it should be allowed to finish.

  10. Ensure the charger is turned off before connecting or disconnecting the battery.

Remember, a discharged battery that sits for extended periods will promote hard sulfation and reduce the run time and life of the battery.

FAQ – People Also Ask…

What does it mean to equalize a battery?

An equalizing charge is nothing more than a deliberate overcharge to remove sulphate crystals that build up on the plates over time. Left unchecked, sulfation can reduce the overall capacity of the battery and render the battery unserviceable in extreme cases.

What does equalizing a battery do?

Equalizing is an overcharge performed on flooded lead acid batteries after they have been fully charged. It reverses the buildup of negative chemical effects like stratification, a condition where acid concentration is greater at the bottom of the battery than at the top.

Do you charge a battery after adding water?

The best time to water your batteries is always at the end of the charge cycle. However, if the electrolyte level is extremely low or the plates are exposed to air, add some water to cover the plates before starting the charge cycle

Can you put tap water in a battery?

Add distilled water to any cells in which the level of electrolyte isn’t touching the bottom of the fill port. Use only distilled water. The minerals in tap water will eventually reduce a battery’s capacity. If your battery is one of the so-called low-maintenance varieties, you may not see any filler caps

Why does the battery need to be recharged in a well-ventilated area?

Because batteries release oxygen and hydrogen gases when they are charging, the areas should be well–ventilated with a fume hood or an exhaust fan to prevent explosions due to the build-up of those gases. Using the proper tools and procedures, personnel can ensure the battery is stable during movement and doesn’t fall.

How many volts are in a forklift battery?

The forklift battery may require ten times more current output (measured in amperes) than the golf cart battery charger can provide. Voltages of 12, 2436, and 48 volts became convenient standards as industrial electric vehicles evolved

In order to extend their lifespan, forklift batteries must receive the right care, at the right time. If you follow a few simple steps, you can get the most from your batteries for years to come and prevent your battery from not holding a charge.

There are three most important things to ensure your battery life!

  1. Keep the battery charged

  2. Keep the battery watered

What Are the Best Forklifts for the Robotics Manufacturing Industry?

Today we are going to take a look at what types of forklifts are the best for the robotics manufacturing industry. You’ll discover our suggestions will apply to industries that use robotic devices to manufacture their products and those industries that manufacture robotic devices.

When choosing the best forklift for the robotics manufacturing industry and the one that suits your needs best, it is important to consider factors such as:

  • The size of the forklift

  • Its lifting capabilities

  • Its function

  • Its fuel source

Here are some great options and why they would make a good choice.

Why Narrow Aisle Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the Robotics Manufacturing Industry

Size:

If you have any type of robotic automation in your facility then your space is probably quite limited. It’s a good idea in this situation to purchase a forklift that can handle tight corners and narrow passageways.

Just by their name, you can immediately tell that a narrow aisle forklift is going to work well in really tight spaces. Both reach trucks and order pickers are specially designed with small spaces and high shelving in mind.

Lifting Capacities:

Narrow aisle reach trucks usually have lifting capacities of 2,500lbs to 5,000 lbs. Roof and rack heights vary between facilities. You want to purchase a forklift that can reach high enough to accommodate for your highest racking.

The great thing about a reach truck is that they are able to reach much higher than an ordinary forklift, so if you need to access products or materials at great heights then a reach truck is a great choice.

Reach trucks can access mich higher products than an ordinary forklift

Accessibility and Speed:

If you have already invested in robotics for your industry then you already understand that time is money. Choosing material handling equipment that is going to speed up your processes is very important to the success of your business.

Investing in a Narrow aisle order picker is another way that you can speed up your processes by giving you faster access to the products and materials that you need.

Fuel Source:

Reach trucks and order pickers are usually electric, which makes them the perfect choice for indoor applications as they don't give off harmful fumes. If you choose one with an onboard charger, then you can also greatly reduce any downtime for recharging your battery.

If you want to be environmentally friendly and get rid of the hassle of maintaining and watering a lead-acid battery, then you can choose a narrow aisle forklift that is powered by a lithium battery instead.

Narrow aisle forklifts work great in tight spaces

Why 3-Wheeled Electric Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the Robotics Manufacturing Industry

Size:

Similar to the narrow aisle forklift, 3-wheel forklifts are more maneuverable and require less space to operate than 4-wheel forklifts.

3-wheel-stand-up.jpg
3-wheel-compact.jpg

Fuel Source:

If you need your forklift to work in tight spaces and indoors, then you will also need to make sure that you choose the correct fuel source. If you choose a 3-wheel forklift that is electric instead of being fueled by propane or diesel, you will not have to worry about harmful emissions.

In addition, if you choose an electric forklift that has a lithium-ion battery, then your charging times are much faster and your maintenance will be much less complicated than if you purchase a lead-acid battery electric forklift. You will also save on the space required for a forklift battery charging station.

cushion tires:

Make sure you also choose an electric forklift that has cushion tires. Cushion tires are smaller than pneumatic tires, which means that your forklift will be lower to the ground, thus decreasing its turning radius even further. In addition, cushion tires are better suited for indoor flooring as well.

The following video will show you a demonstration of all of the great features of this 3-wheeled electric forklift by Hangcha:

Why Electric Counterbalance Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the Robotics Manufacturing Industry

Lifting Capabilities:

If you need more lifting capacity for your forklift, then an electric counterbalance is a great choice. You can get models that have lifting capacities ranging from 4,000 to 35,000 lbs.

However, the more lifting capacity a forklift has, the larger the forklift will be, so you should choose a model that will give you the best balance between power and size.

Fuel Source:

In the past, in order to get a forklift with higher lifting capacities, you would need to purchase one with an internal combustion engine that would burn fossil fuels like propane or diesel.

Your only choice then for inside applications would have been a propane fuel forklift because it burns cleaner than diesel and can be used indoors as long as you have proper ventilation to counteract any emissions.

However, with the advancement of technology and the use of lithium-ion batteries, it is now possible to get electric forklifts that are safe to use inside and have the strength to handle heavier loads.

4-wheel electric.jpg

Indoor/Outdoor Versatility:

If your robotics manufacturing industry requires your forklift to operate both indoors and outdoors, an electric model can work quite well, especially if it has been designed to work in wet and cold conditions. Hangcha's XC Series electric forklift, for example, uses Li-ion power and has been designed with an IPX4 water resistance rating which means it is resistant to water splashes from any direction making it suitable to use outside.

Furthermore, if you need your forklift to pick up raw materials that are stored outside of your facility and then bring them into the production line, then an electric counterbalance forklift that is water-resistant would be a great choice for you.

FAQ's for Pneumatic Tires

If you are in the market for a new forklift and are wondering if you should choose one with pneumatic tires, keep reading and we'll answer all of the most frequently asked questions about pneumatic tires to help you make the right choice.

  1. What Are Pneumatic Tires?

Pneumatic tires are very similar to car tires. They have a very thick tread that will give you great traction over uneven or loose surfaces. There are basically 2 types of pneumatic tires: solid pneumatic tires and air-filled pneumatic tires. Air-filled pneumatic tires are filled with either air or foam.

2. What Is the Difference Between Pneumatic and Cushion Tires?

The main difference between pneumatic and cushion tires is the tread. Cushion tires are smooth while pneumatic tires have a tread. Cushion tires are made of solid rubber and are usually much smaller than pneumatic tires.

Cushion tires give you a lower centre of gravity and they won't mark your warehouse flooring, so they are better for inside applications, whereas pneumatic tires are better for outdoors.

3. Do Pneumatic Tires Go Flat?

Just like your car tire, a pneumatic forklift tire that is filled with air can go flat if it gets punctured by a sharp object like a nail. For this reason, you may want to invest in solid pneumatic tires that are filled with foam instead of air or are made with solid rubber wrapped around a steel band.

Solid pneumatic tires are puncture-resistant and are a great choice if you are using your forklift on surfaces with lots of sharp objects like construction sites or lumber yards.

4. Are Pneumatic Tires Good?

Pneumatic tires are good if you are using them for the right type of application. They are more rugged and will grip better than cushion tires so they are your best choice for outdoor applications. They also tend to last longer than cushion tires.

rough-terrain-forklifts.png

Pneumatic tires are more rugged and will usually last longer than cushion tires

5. Can you put pneumatic tires on any forklift?

You should only put pneumatic tires on forklifts that are designed for pneumatic tires. Your forklift frame, axle, and lifting capacity is designed with a specific type of tire in mind. Putting pneumatic tires on a cushion forklift, for example, could cause a safety hazard.

If you are unsure whether or not your forklift can handle pneumatic tires, check with the manufacturer.

6. Can You Fill Air Pneumatic Tires with Foam?

Foam will better protect your pneumatic tires from punctures in environments where sharp objects are present. Depending on your tires, you may be able to fill them with foam instead of air. The following video shows you how it is done.

Discover how pneumatic tires are filled with foam

Once your tires have been filled with foam, they usually take two to three days to cure. Foam-filled tires can often be used with your existing wheels as well. You should, however, follow the manufacturer's instructions and have them filled by a professional local dealer.

7. What is the difference between Air pneumatic and solid pneumatic tires?

An air-filled pneumatic tire has an airtight inner core filled with pressurized air and covered by a tread that is usually reinforced with steel belting or other materials.

The inside pressure of the tire is greater than the outside air pressure, which means that the tire will stay inflated even with the heavy weight of the vehicle pressing down on it.

You can easily recognize an air-filled pneumatic tire because they will have a valve where you can fill them with air. Cushion and solid pneumatic tires don't have a valve.

Solid pneumatic tires, on the other hand, are made of solid rubber or sometimes filled with foam instead of air. This makes them more puncture-proof and durable than air filled tires, but they don't give you as smooth of a ride.

air-filled pneumatic tires.jpg

Solid pneumatic tires are more puncture-proof than air-filled ones

8. Is it easy to get the right air pressure for pneumatic tires When you are inflating them?

It can be quite difficult to get the proper tire pressure you need for your application when you are inflating your pneumatic tires. Variations in air pressure can greatly affect your tire's performance and it is quite tricky to achieve the perfect pressure.

9. Which type of forklift tire costs more: Cushion of Pneumatic?

Pneumatic tires are usually larger than cushion tires and are generally slightly more expensive to purchase. However, they are usually worth the extra investment because they are more durable and tend to last longer.

Because pneumatic tires give your forklift a smoother ride, they can also make your forklift last longer as the different components are not being shaken around as much.

air-filled pneumatic tires2.jpg

pneumatic tires are larger and more expensive than cushion

10. Will Different Temperatures Affect the performance of pneumatic tires?

If your pneumatic tires are filled with air, then a change in temperature could affect their performance. Hotter temperatures will cause the air inside your tires to expand whereas colder temperatures will cause them to deflate.

As a result, you can experience poorer handling. This is because If your tires deflate, they will flatten slightly meaning that more tread will be in contact with the road.

11. Can you use pneumatic tires indoors?

Even though pneumatic tires are used outside more often, you can use them inside, especially if you want extra comfort for your operators.

However, if you are working in tighter spaces and require greater maneuverability, you may want to choose a cushion tire. Pneumatic tires are larger and therefore have a larger turning radius than smaller cushion tires.

Pneumatic tires can be used inside but they have a larger turning radius
