What Is a Counterbalance Forklift?

A counterbalance forklift gets its name from its design. It is heavily weighted in the rear so that when it lifts an incredibly heavy load, the weight in the back can "counter" the front weight so that the forklift doesn't tip over. The two weights balance each other out and give the forklift stability.

Counterbalance Forklift Models

There are many different types of counterbalance forklift models to choose from. Each one has certain advantages which makes it suitable for specific applications. The various models can be categorized by fuel source, types of wheels, and lifting capacities.

Counterbalance Forklift: Electric, Propane, or Diesel?

You can choose the type of fuel that your counterbalance forklift uses. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

Electric Counterbalance forklift

An electric counterbalance forklift is great for indoor applications

Advantages:

An electric counterbalance forklift is your best choice for indoor applications. This is because electric forklifts do not cause harmful emissions like propane and diesel models.

They are also the best choice for working inside enclosed spaces such as unloading transports or shipping containers. Electric forklifts are also much more environmentally friendly than forklifts with internal combustion engines.

Electric forklifts are also the quietest type of counterbalance forklift and they cost less to maintain.

Certain models of lithium-ion-powered electric forklifts charge while you are operating them and only take about 2 hours to fully charge. Given this, they can be used for double and triple shifts without the need to purchase a second battery as you do with a lead-acid battery.

Lithium-ion batteries also don't need to be watered and carefully maintained like a lead-acid battery does, making them virtually maintenance-free.

Lithium-ion forklifts are virtually maintenance free

Disadvantages:

Lead-acid forklift batteries are large and cumbersome and they need to be carefully maintained. They also take about 8 to 10 hours to charge and another 8 hours for them to cool down before you can use them again. So you have to have more than one forklift battery to rotate if you want to do double shifts with your equipment which can be quite expensive.

Lithium-ion-powered counterbalance forklifts are more expensive to purchase upfront than propane forklifts, however, their total cost of ownership is much lower.

Electric forklifts don't perform as well in cold or wet locations.

Best for: Indoor applications and enclosed spaces

Propane Counterbalance forklift

Propane can be used indoors and outdoors

Advantages:

Propane-powered forklifts produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions and have a lower carbon content than diesel-powered models.

Because of their lower emissions, you can use them in both indoor and outdoor applications, however, you would still want to have proper ventilation if you are using them inside of a warehouse. They are also more eco-friendly than a diesel forklift.

Propane-powered forklifts are usually less expensive to purchase upfront than an electric forklift and it is faster and easier to change a propane tank than it is to change and charge a lead-acid battery.

Disadvantages:

Propane forklifts cost more to run than electric ones and they don't have as good of rear visibility due to the position of their propane tank. In addition, really cold temperatures may cause them to be less reliable.

Best for: Indoor and outdoor applications

Diesel Counterbalance forklift

A diesel counterbalance forklift will usually last longer than a propane or electric model

Advantages:

Diesel is much cheaper to purchase than propane. Diesel engines are generally more powerful than both electric and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) engines. Diesel forklifts also have a lower total cost of ownership compared to propane forklifts. Diesel engines generally last longer as well.

Disadvantages:

Because of their high dangerous emissions, diesel forklifts are not suitable for indoor applications. Diesel forklifts also are the most expensive to purchase.

Best for: Outdoor applications

Counterbalance Forklift: Cushion or Pneumatic?

Counterbalance forklifts also come with a choice of tires. You can purchase an electric, propane or diesel forklift with your choice of tires. Here are the different tires available.

Cushion Tires

Cushion tires work best for indoor applications

Advantages:

Cushion forklift tires are made from solid rubber and are attached directly on the wheel of your forklift. They are also smooth and do not have the deep treads found on pneumatic tires.

Because cushion forklift tires sit lower to the ground, they will give you a smaller turning radius. This means that they have exceptional maneuverability.

Disadvantages:

Cushion tires have a difficult time traveling over the uneven surfaces found outside, such as dirt and gravel. Because cushion tires have a lower clearance than pneumatic, they are unable to maneuver over rough surfaces.

Best for: Cushion forklift tires are best for indoor applications. This type of tire is designed to work best on even surfaces such as warehouse flooring.

Pneumatic Tires

Pneumatic tires are best for rough terrain

Advantages:

An air-filled pneumatic tire has an airtight inner core filled with pressurized air and covered by a tread that is usually reinforced with steel belting or other materials. The inside pressure of the tire is greater than the outside air pressure, which means that the tire will stay inflated even with the heavy weight of the vehicle pressing down on it.

Pneumatic tires are made out of very durable rubber and are constructed with a deep tread that makes them more durable than cushion tires. The deeper treads on a pneumatic tire are perfect for gripping uneven surfaces outside.

Air-filled pneumatic tires are filled with air, which cushions your ride and will give you a smoother overall operating experience. The air helps to absorb the bumps when going over potholes and other obstructions, making your operator’s ride much more comfortable. This absorbing effect will also help to lengthen the lifespan of your forklift as it will protect your trucks from the hard, constant jarring of the terrain.

Solid pneumatic tires are made of rubber or sometimes filled with foam instead of air. This makes them more puncture-proof than air-filled tires, but they don't give you as smooth of a ride.

Solid pneumatic tires resist punctures

Disadvantages:

Pneumatic tires can get punctured and will need to be repaired or replaced. They are also more expensive to buy than cushion tires and they are not suitable for warehouse floors. Because of their size, pneumatic forklifts usually have a larger turning radius, making them less maneuverable than a smaller cushion forklift.

Best for: If your forklifts are to be working on uneven or rugged terrain, such as gravel, pneumatic tires are your best choice.

You can also use pneumatic tires indoor for extra comfort for your operators, however, if you are working in tighter spaces and require greater maneuverability, you may want to choose a cushion tire.

Buying a used forklift is similar to buying a used car. There are many choices out there, and they all may look okay at a first glance, but how can you know that you aren't buying a lemon that's not going to last?

Here are some guidelines to follow.

Parts to Inspect When Purchasing a Used Forklift

When purchasing a used forklift, there are some key parts or signs that you should look for that will indicate the quality of the unit that you are looking at.

Check for signs of wear on the fork heels

Check the Forks

The forks are one of the most important parts of your forklift. You want to make sure that they are in good shape and are sturdy enough to handle the loads that you require. When you are inspecting a used forklift check for:

1. Capacity:

One of the most important features to look at is the capacity. Capacity means how much weight your pallet jack can lift. Pallet jack capacities can range anywhere from 3,000 to 8,000 lbs.

Before you buy a pallet jack, make sure that you calculate the weight of goods that you are going to need it to lift and transport. Forklift Lithium-Ion Battery

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) is an "advanced battery technology that uses lithium ions as a key component of its electrochemistry." The electrodes inside a lithium-ion battery are made from lithium and carbon.

Because lithium is a highly reactive element it is capable of storing a large amount of energy in its atomic bonds. This means that lithium-ion batteries have a very high energy density.

How a Forklift Lithium-Ion Battery Differs from a Lead AciD BATTERY

There are several differences between a forklift lithium-ion battery and the common lead acid battery, here are some of the main ones:

Battery Management System: Lithium-ion batteries have a battery management system that protects the battery from getting an under-charge and an overcharge. Lead acid batteries do not have this feature.

Usable Capacity: Lithium batteries have a greater usable capacity. You can use 80% of the power in a lithium battery before it is considered to be flat. The lead acid battery on the other hand only lets you use between 30 and 40% of its power before it is considered flat.

Power Storage: A lithium-ion battery can store 150 watt-hours of electricity in 1 kilogram of battery, however, a lead acid battery can only store about 25 watt-hours per kilogram.

Cost: Lithium batteries are considerably more expensive than lead acid batteries.

Weight: Lithium batteries weigh about 1/3 of the weight of a lead acid battery, which makes them much easier to handle. This is because lead makes up 90% of the lead acid battery whereas only 3% of the lithium-ion battery is made up of lithium.

Temperatures: Lithium batteries are sensitive to temperature so they don't work well in extremely cold temperatures.

Power Output: Lithium batteries offer a larger power output per kilogram than lead acid batteries.

Charge Time: A lithium-ion battery can receive charge at a much higher rate than a lead-acid battery so their charge times are much quicker.

Lifespan: A forklift lithium-ion battery has a much longer life expectancy than a lead acid battery.

Forklift Lithium-Ion Battery: MAINTENANCE

The forklift lithium-ion battery requires very little maintenance, however there are a few things that you should do in order to ensure that it lasts a long time and that it charges correctly.

After you have finished charging your forklift lithium-ion battery you need to cover the charging gun and the dust cover. If you don't cover these you may find you have problems when you try to charge again as the dirt and debris that builds up might prevent your charging gun from inserting all the way into position.

If your gun isn't inserted all the way you won't get a complete connection and it will return an error code, therefore, your battery will not charge. Dust can also wear away the surface on your battery connections and will cause a poor connection.

It is also a good idea to regularly clean the charger connectors to clear away any dust, debris or water that might get on them.

Forklift Lead Acid Battery: Maintenance

A forklift lead acid battery is much more difficult to maintain because of its extreme size and weight (they weigh about as much as a mini van) and because it contains harmful acid which can be extremely dangerous if mishandled.

They also need to be watered. According to the Canadian Safety Association, your employees must be trained to safely handle and move batteries using the proper equipment.

The Ministry of Labour's study done in 1996 revealed that the main reason for forklift accidents such as collisions, shifting loads, and tip-overs, was due to lack of an effective safety program.

They found that workers were not trained properly, there was inadequate supervision and the work environments were not set up with safety in mind. The following is a list of forklift safety tips that will address these issues.

1. Provide Proper Training for All Your Employees

The OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act) requires that anyone who will be operating a lifting device needs to be competent. In order to be deemed "competent," you must:

• Be qualified in terms of your knowledge, training, and experience to organize your work and its performance

• Be familiar with the OHSA and the rules that apply to your work

• Know about any possible or actual dangers related to health and safety in your workplace

It is your responsibility as an employer to make sure that every forklift operator in your facility takes forklift training and are deemed "competent" before they operate a forklift. Training should be both practical and in-class.

Each forklift operator should perform a pre-shift inspection of their vehicle before they begin each shift.

This is a thorough inspection that should help you identify any potential safety risks so you can have them addressed before you use your forklift.

• The condition of your tires: ensuring there is no excessive wear

• Your fluid levels: making sure they are topped up

• The presence of any fluid leaks: such as water, oil, or hydraulic fluid

• The condition of your forks: making sure they are straight and not cracked

• If pedestrians wander into the path of a forklift

Watch where you are going: When you are driving your forklift, always look in the direction that you are going. If you can't see in front of you because of the size of your load, then drive in reverse.

Make your presence known: Use your horn when you come to a blind corner or intersection or use forklift safety lights to warn others of your presence.

• Overhead and side clearances are sufficient to all for the safe operation of your forklifts. This includes areas such as loading docks, doorways, and in rooms

• Floors, passageways, and aisles are all clear and free from any obstructions, debris, spills, or other hazards

• Your facility has adequate ventilation so that vapours form refuelling and the operation of your forklifts don't accumulate

All forklifts are not the same and not every forklift will work for every application. There are a wide variety of different forklifts designed to suit different operations. So, how can you know which one is the best forklift for your needs?

The main things that you need to consider when choosing the best forklift include:

• The type of power it uses

• Where your forklift will be used

• The dimensions of your facility

The Type of Power You Need

There are different types of power used to run forklifts: electric, propane, gasoline, and diesel.

When using propane forklifts indoors:

• Make sure that your facility has proper ventilation

• Make sure that you keep your propane forklift engines well maintained

• Make sure that you change the propane tanks outside or in a well-ventilated area away from anything that could ignite the gas

• Only allow trained individuals to handle, refill, and store the liquid propane fuel

Perform a Forklift Inspection Before Each Shift

One of the best forklift safety practices that every operator should adopt is doing a pre-shift inspection of your forklift before you start each shift to make sure that everything is working properly and that your truck is safe to operate.

You should do both a visual and operational inspection of your forklift and if you notice anything that is wrong, do not ignore it. Tell your supervisor immediately so that the issue can be looked after.

A best forklift safety practice is to check your machine before each shift

Visual Inspection:

During your visual inspection, you should take a look at the following things:

Your working environment: Make sure that the floor you will be working on is clear of any debris and that there are no obstructions overhead. Make sure that are no objects nearby that you might hit as you drive and verify that there is a functioning fire extinguisher present.

Your engine: Check your oil, fuel, and radiator water levels if you are operating an LPG (liquid propane gas), gasoline, or diesel forklift.
.
Your battery: Make sure that your battery is fully charged and is securely in place. Check your cables for any exposed wires and make sure your battery plug connections are tight, clean, and in good condition. Make sure the vent caps are not clogged and the electrolyte levels in the cells are correct.

Your hydraulic system: Check that bolts, nuts, guards, chains, and hydraulic hose reels are tight and that they aren't damaged or missing.

Your hoses: Make sure that all of your hoses are secured and not loose, crimped, bent, worn, or rubbing.

Your tires: Check your tires for any signs of excessive wear or damage. Make sure that the tire pressure is proper if you have pneumatic tires.

Your forks: Take a look at your forks to ensure that they aren't bent, cracked, or damaged and that the positioning latches are in good condition.

In addition, check that:

• Your carriage teeth are not chipped, worn, or broken

• There are no damp spots around your forklift that would indicate a leak

• Your chain anchor pins are in food condition and not loose or bent

Operational Inspection

Your horn: Make sure it is working and loud enough to be heard over environmental noise.

Your brakes: Check that all of your brakes are working well, including your floor brakes, parking brakes, and your deadman seat brake.

Your clutch: Test out your clutch and gearshift to make sure that it shifts smoothly without jerking or jumping.

Your dashboard: Check that all of the lights on your control panel are working.

Your steering wheel: Make sure that you can move your steering wheel easily and smoothly.

Your lifting and tilting devices: Check that your lifting mechanism is moving smoothly by raising it to its maximum height and then lowering it. Then check that your tilt mechanism is working well by tilting the mast forward and backward all the way.

Your hoses and cylinders: Make sure that they are still not leaking now that you have done your preliminary inspections.

Noises: Listen for any unusual noises.

Only Trained Personnel Should Operate Your Forklift

Proper training is an essential best forklift safety practice. No untrained person should be allowed to operate your forklift. You must not allow anyone to hop on for a ride either.

Best Forklift Safe Driving Practices

While you are operating your forklift, you should follow these best driving practices:

• Do not drive too fast and decrease your speed when going around corners

• Keep your hands, arms, feet, legs, head inside your truck at all times

• On flat surfaces drive with your forks as low to the ground as possible and tilted backwards

• Try not to make any sudden stops

• Keep watching in the direction that you are travelling

• Look out for wet and oil spots, loose objects, holes, rough terrain, etc.

• Watch out for pedestrians and other vehicles in your vicinity

• Sound your horn when going around a corner or to warn of your approach.

Forklifts and Blind Spots

Take note of any blind spots that you have in your vehicle with and without a load. If someone is crossing your route, stop driving, lower your forks to the floor and wait for the way to be clear before proceeding.

Be extra careful driving on slight inclines

Driving on a Sloped Surface

If you are operating your forklift on an incline, you should always point your forks downhill if you are not carrying a load, and point them uphill if you are carrying a load.

So this means that you will have to drive backwards down ramps when you have a load so that the load doesn’t fall off and drive and drive backwards up a ramp when you aren’t carrying a load. You should adjust the tilt of your forks to match the slope's gradient.

Never try to turn your forklift on a slope; wait until you are on level ground.

Best Forklift Steering Practices

Never turn your steering wheel sharply if you are traveling fast. Make sure to support your load by the front wheels and turn your forklift with your rear wheels.

Always follow your load capacities. If you overload your forklift, it will be very difficult to steer.

Best Forklift Loading Practices

Make sure you know the manufacturer's recommended maximum load limit of your forklift and of its forks. These numbers will be on your data plate on your machine.

Never exceed these maximums. They are there for your safety and for the safety of your forklift.

Your forklift data plate will show you the maximum capacities of your lift truck

Position your load according to the recommended load centre. Never try to counterbalance an overload by adding extra weight.

You should also keep your load close to your front wheels to keep it stable. Keep your mast in an upright position and level your forks before inserting them in the pallet.

How To Raise and Lower a Load Safely

Wait until your forklift is fully stopped and braked before you attempt to lift your load. Check that you have enough overhead clearance and stay clear of any overhead power lines. Lift your load straight up and then tilt it back slightly

Stay on your forklift while your load is raised as your truck is less stable in this position. Don't let anybody walk or stand near or under the elevated load. No one should walk under a raised forklift mast even if there is no load on it.

Do's and Don'ts of Forklift Service

According to the Ministry of Labour, forklift owners need to keep their lifting equipment in "good condition to prevent mechanical or operational failures."

Also according to the Ministry of Labour, you need to "review preventative maintenance and inspection reports and follow the manufacturers' instructions for recommended maintenance schedules and practices."

Here are some of the most essential forklift service recommendations as outlined by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).

Forklift Service Do's

1. Follow your manufacturer's maintenance and servicing schedule. Your manufacturer will outline when each type of service should be done.

It is important to have it done when recommended to avoid costly repairs and to keep your forklift running smoothly.

2. When working on lead-acid batteries or battery-charging equipment, always wear the proper personal protective equipment including:

• Safety goggles

• Face shields

• Aprons, gloves, and rubber boots

3. Always attach a chain hoist to the counterweight before you try to remove it.

4. Always cover the top of your battery with insulating material and always handle your battery with care.

5. Securely support your forklift hood upright or remove it completely before you begin working on it.

6. Always keep your work area clean and tidy, cleaning up any liquids such as hydraulic fluids or oil that may have been spilled. Tidy up your parts, cans, tools and other obstacles as well.

7. Make sure that your area is well ventilated before you run LPG, gas, or diesel forklifts.

8. Use a hoist or leverage tools when lifting or moving heavy parts and equipment.

9. Ensure your forklift truck or forks are securely supported by approved blocks before you begin to do any forklift service beneath it.

Forklift Service Don't s

1. Don't begin removing the wheels of your forklift until you have securely placed your forklift on blocks so that it doesn’t move when you are working on it.

2. Don't let hoisting chains, tools, or other metal objects come in contact with your battery terminals.

3. Don't let any unqualified person service or maintain your forklift equipment. This includes working on attachments that you are unfamiliar with.

4. Don't start up your forklift or begin driving it until you have found out why it is in for servicing. Don't start it when it is on a lift hoist or wheel stands.

5. Don't start any repairs before first checking the operator's daily checklist. At the beginning of each shift, your operator must do a pre start checklist. Refer to this list for any issues that were detected.

6. Don't start up your engine until you have checked that you have removed all of your tools and extra parts.

7. Don't light a match, smoke, or weld if you are in or near a battery charging area or refuelling spot.

Forklift Service: Things to Inspect

The following are some additional tips and things to inspect as recommended by the CCOHS:

1. Take a close look at the bolts holding the counterweight to the body of your forklift. If any bolts look worn out or if any are missing, you need to replace them.

2. During your annual inspection of if you have noticed any cracks appearing before this inspection, you should do magnetic particle testing.

This type of testing is non-destructive and will help you discover any defects of cracks at or near the surface of the metal.

3. Use magnetic particle testing to inspect other parts of your forklift such as your hoses, couplings, fittings and connections to the cylinders in the main mast assembly, as well as your tilt control system.

4. Take a close look at your forks to make sure that none of the sections are twisted, bent, distorted or damaged. If you see any defects, you should test them out.

5. Test to see that your forklift is able to lift and handle the maximum recommended capacity limit.

Types of Forklift Service Report Inspections

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety recommends three different types of forklift service report inspections: a planned maintenance inspection, an annual planned maintenance inspection, and a lifting capacity inspection.

All of these inspections need to be done by a "trained, qualified maintenance technician."

Planned Maintenance Inspection:

Your forklift manufacturer will probably have a recommended interval for carrying out your planned maintenance inspection. If they do not, then this inspection needs to take place about every 200 hours.

Annual Planned Maintenance:

Once a year or every 2000 hours (whichever one comes first), you should perform an annual planned maintenance inspection.

Listing Capacity Inspection:

A lifting capacity inspection needs to be carried out as often as your forklift manufacturer recommends it - at least once a year.

This will determine whether or not your forklift is capable of lifting and carrying the maximum load that is specified on its nameplate.

In addition to annually, this type of inspection also needs to be done each time the forklift is purchase by a new owner and before it is being used for the first time.

The Annual lifting inspection needs to be carried out by a competent person.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act defines a competent person as someone who is trained, knowledgeable, experienced and qualified to thoroughly examine your lifting equipment, and has the appropriate and theoretical knowledge of the equipment.
