How To Get Your Forklift To Lift More Weight? Think Again!

How To Get Your Forklift To Lift More Weight? Never try to lift above your forklift’s capacity

1. It's not safe.

Don't lift loads that exceed your forklift's capacity:

Your forklift's maximum capacity is set in order to keep you and your load safe. If you exceed the maximum capacity and carry a load that is even slightly heavier than your limit, you are risking having your forklift tip over which is incredibly dangerous.

Forklift tip-overs can injure or even kill someone:

Forklift tip-overs are dangerous for many reasons, including:

  • Your operator could be injured or even killed

  • Other workers could be injured or killed if the forklift or its load falls on them

  • Your load itself could get severely damaged or destroyed costing your company a lot of money to replace it.

  • You could do damage to your facility itself (i.e. racking knocked over or damaged, walls damaged if a heavy load hit them, etc.)

Having your forklift lift more weight can result in injuries or even death

Additional factors that can cause a tip-over:

Even if you are carrying a load that is at the maximum capacity or slightly under, you could still tip over if:

  • Your load shifts for some reason

  • You have to brake suddenly

  • You are moving your load on a slope

  • You get hit by a crosswind

It is always safest to carry loads that are under your maximum capacity limit.

2. It could damage your forklift.

Trying to get your forklift to lift more weight could do irreparable damage to your forklift

Not only could workers get injured and products get damaged if you try to get your forklift to lift more weight, but you could also damage your forklift itself.

Forks break:

The forks on your forklift are designed to lift a maximum weight. If you try to lift more than that amount you will risk bending or even breaking your forks.

Metal wears out faster:

If you constantly exceed the capacity of your forklift the metal parts of your forklift including the chains, forks and kingpin, located near the rear axle, will experience metal fatigue and will wear out at a faster rate than if you lift only recommended weights.

Stress on the hydraulics:

Your hydraulic system is also designed with a maximum weight capacity. Lifting over this capacity will put extra stress on your hydraulics and cause it to fail or wear out faster as well.

3. It's illegal to make a forklift lifting capacity modification that's not approved by the forklift manufacturer.

How to get your forklift to lift more weight? Make sure you do it legally

According to Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.S.O, section 7, if you want to make any forklift lifting capacity modifications, it needs to be approved by your forklift's manufacturer.

Any alteration that you make to your forklift that could affect its rated capacity or compromise the safety of your operators has to be approved by the manufacturer in advance.

If you are unsure about whether or not an alteration is okay or not, it is best to consult with a qualified forklift truck professional who can help you make that decision. In addition, any modification that you make needs to be done by a qualified engineer.

What is meant by capacity and data plates?

The data plate contains important information about your forklift

Capacity:

The load capacity is the recommended maximum weight that your forklift is designed to carry. Lifting above the recommended capacity of your forklift is dangerous and will damage your machine.

You should figure out ahead of time the weight of the loads that you want your forklift to be moving and lifting prior to purchasing a forklift and make sure that you get one that can handle the weights that you need it to.

Data plates:

The data plate is a metal plate attached to a forklift that contains important information about the particular forklift, including:

  • Load capacity

  • Fuel type

  • Model number

  • Serial numbers

  • Manufacturer's name

  • Truck weight

  • Tire type and size

Safe ways to lift heavier loads.

How to get your forklift to lift more weight? Rent heavier equipment

Rent equipment:

If you only need to have a modification for a one-time load or for a short period, then consider renting the equipment you need instead of modifying your current equipment. You can rent material handling equipment that is designed for the lifting that you need for both short and longer-term periods.

For example, Forklift Hub offers daily, weekly, and monthly contracts for renting a vast array of forklifts for both indoor and outdoor use with lifting capacities from 3,000 to 80,000 lbs, at highly competitive rates. We'll even deliver it to your location and offer you our rent-to-own program if you decide that you need the equipment permanently.

Purchase Equipment:

How to get your forklift to lift more weight? Purchase different equipment

If you need a forklift that can handle heavier loads than your current equipment can on a more regular basis, you should consider trading in your current forklift for one that has a higher capacity.

For example, at Forklift Hub we take trade-ins and we have a large selection of quality pre-owned forklifts that you can choose from. Our pre-owned trucks have a great 30-day warranty and we also offer financing on both our new and used forklifts.

In addition, you could also consider purchasing a new forklift. Depending on the brand that you choose, you may find that purchasing a new forklift will give you better equipment that will last longer for you than buying used.

For example, our Hangcha forklifts are priced significantly lower than other brands yet they are just as good, if not better. Often it makes more sense to purchase a new Hangcha forklift than another pre-owned model.

Why Choose Forklift Hub?

If you are looking for the best new and used forklift truck dealer, contact Forklift Hub. Heavy duty forklifts can handle extremely heavy loads

Heavy Duty Forklift Information

1. What Is a Heavy Duty Forklift?

A heavy duty forklift has a similar function to a regular warehouse forklift, however, it is capable of lifting much heavier loads. In addition, it can lift its loads much higher off the ground than a regular warehouse forklift.

Heavy duty forklifts can be 10 ft or more in length and they almost always have an internal combustion engine, giving them more power. However, with the development of lithium battery technology, you can also purchase electric heavy duty forklifts that can handle loads of 25,000 to 35,000 lbs.

Heavy duty forklifts are also referred to as:

  • Industrial forklifts

  • Large capacity forklifts

  • High capacity forklifts

  • Heavy forklift trucks

You can now purchase electric heavy duty forklifts that can handle loads of 25,000 t0 35,000 lbs.

2. Industries that Typically Require a Heavy Duty Forklift

Here are some of the most common industries that use heavy duty forklifts due to the weight of the materials that they handle:

  • Automotive manufacturers

  • General manufacturing

  • Oil and gas production

  • Wind power

  • Nuclear energy stations

  • Shipyards and Railways

  • Marinas

  • Construction companies

  • Mining companies

  • Pulp and paper industry

  • Steel and aluminum producers

  • Farms

3. Why Are Load Capacity and Lifting Height Important?

Load Capacity:

There are a wide range of load capacities when it comes to forklifts. Load capacity refers to the maximum weight that a forklift can safely lift.

It is a good idea to choose a forklift that has a lifting capacity that is greater than you think you are going to need so that you aren't caught in a situation where your safety is at risk. If a forklift carries more than its maximum lifting capacity then it can become unstable.

For example, if most of the loads that you transport are around 20,000 lbs, but you may at times need to lift a load that is 30,000 lbs, then it is better to choose a forklift that can handle 30,000 lbs.

Lifting Height:

Lifting height refers to the vertical distance that a forklift’s mast can raise its loads. Different forklift models have different load lifting heights. You want to make sure that your forklift is going to be able to lift your loads to the height that you require.

You should figure out how high you need your loads lifted before choosing your forklift. Measure your worksite and get a forklift that can reach that high.

4. Heavy Duty Forklift Attachments

If you want to increase your heavy duty forklift's capabilities and flexibility, you can purchase special attachments such as:

Booms: give your forklift the ability to lift from above instead of below

Clamps: enable your forklift to move oddly shaped items safely

Fork extensions: allow you to lift larger loads

If you are looking for special attachments that will increase your forklift’s capabilities, contact us.

5. Pros and Cons of Buying New or Used

If you are looking to purchase a heavy duty forklift, you might be wondering if it is better to go with a new or used model.

Used Heavy Duty Forklifts:

If money is tight, then buying a quality used heavy duty forklift is your best option. The great thing about heavy duty forklifts is that they are durable and they generally last longer than lighter forklifts.

Make sure that you go to a dealer that has a good reputation for quality used forklifts and make sure that they offer you a warranty so that you can purchase with confidence.

An example of a great used vehicle warranty is a 30-day full warranty that covers your forklift, front to back, for a full 30 days after your purchase. If anything goes wrong with it, the dealer will fix it for you, free of charge.

Another great way to ensure that you are getting a quality used forklift is to purchase from a dealer that certifies their equipment. Certifying means that they have thoroughly checked over the forklift to make sure that it is in great condition before they sell it to you. Certification helps you know that you are getting the best quality equipment possible.

Buying used can be a wise investment. Just like a brand new car, the moment you drive your new forklift off the lot, it loses value. Quality used forklifts depreciate at a much slower rate so they are often the better choice.

New Heavy Duty Forklifts:

The biggest disadvantage of purchasing a new heavy duty forklift is the price. However, some new forklifts, such as those manufactured by Hangcha, are priced significantly lower than other new forklifts.

You will not only be getting one of the highest quality trucks available but you will be surprised at how incredibly low they are priced.

In fact, their prices are so amazing that it often is a better deal to buy one of their new models than a pre-owned model from another manufacturer.

Trade In Forklift: Find the Best Place

Trade In Forklift: Not All Dealers Offer This

Not all forklift dealers will allow trade-ins towards the purchase of another forklift. However, it pays to find one that does as it has some great benefits, including:

  • Saving you time: Trading your forklift will be a much faster process than trying to sell it yourself.

  • Saving you effort: It is much easier to trade in your forklift than having to do all the work involved in selling it yourself.

  • Guaranteed sale: If you try to sell your forklift yourself, you may not be successful.

  • Getting the right replacement: If you trade in your forklift to a reputable dealer, then they can also help you find the perfect replacement.

A reputable dealer can help you find the perfect replacement equipment

Trade in Forklift: How to Choose the Right Dealer

Here are some steps to follow when you are looking for the right dealer to trade your forklift into.

Step #1: Find a Dealer that Offers Trade Ins

The first step to finding the right dealer to take your forklift trade-in is locating one that is relatively close to you and actually offers trade ins. Go online to search for forklift dealers in your area that offer this service.

If you are having a hard time finding a dealer near you, expand your service to dealerships further away and check to see if they offer pick up and delivery. If they do, then using a dealer that is a bit further away won't matter as much and it will give you a better selection of places to choose from.

Wayco-used-forklifts.jpeg

Search for a dealer that does trade-ins

Step #2: Do Your Research

Once you have a list of dealerships that offer trade ins, then take a look at each one and the type of reputation they have.

You can search online reviews from third-party sites such as Google reviews and the Better Business Bureau to discover what past customers are saying about the company both good and bad. Check out their star rating on Google and how many reviews they have received.

A company that has several reviews with a high rating will be more reliable than a company that has a 5-star rating but only one review.

google-reviews.png

Trade In Forklift: Online reviews will help you find a reputable dealer

Step #3: Talk to Previous Customers

You could actually contact previous customers to see what they think of the forklift dealership. Often online reviews will have company names, so you could call that company to ask about their experience with the dealership. Some possible questions you could ask include:

  • Did you have a trade-in and did you receive a fair price?

  • Are you happy with the quality of the equipment you purchased now that some time has passed?

  • Did you have any issues trading in your forklift?

  • Would you recommend this forklift dealership?

In addition, you could contact the forklift dealership directly to get the names of previous businesses they have sold to so that you could contact them for a reference.

Find out what previous customers think about the dealership

Step #4:Choose a Dealer with Lots of Years of Experience

When you make your choice of where you want to take your trade in forklift, choose a forklift dealer that has been in business for a long time. Lots of years of experience means two things:

1) You will be dealing with a reputable company: For a business to stay in business for any length of time, they need to have a good reputation.

A dealership that treats its customers fairly and has high-quality products and services will be able to stay in business much longer than a business that does not. This is especially true for a smaller, local business that relies heavily on repeat traffic.

2) You can take advantage of their great knowledge: A dealership that has been in business for a long time, will have acquired a wealth of knowledge about forklifts and they will be able to help you make the best choice.

Trade in Forklift: Choose a dealer that has been in business for a long time

Factors that Will Affect Your Trade-in Value

Some of the main factors that will affect how much you get for your trade in include:

  • Load Capacity: Forklifts with larger capacities usually sell for more than those with smaller capacities.

  • Type of Fuel: Electric and diesel models usually sell for more than Propane (LPG) models.

  • Type & Condition of Tires: Speciality tires that are in good condition such as non-marking, foam-filled or razor sipping will increase your price. If your tires need to be replaced then that could lower your price.

  • Hydraulics: If you have extra hydraulic functions that accommodate attachments, then your forklift will be worth more.

  • Mast Size: You can get a higher price if your mast is taller or is specialized.

  • Extra Features and Accessories: Having extra features such as outdoor cabs, non-standard accessories and other special attachments will increase your forklift's value.

  • Supply & Demand: If there are more buyers than forklifts available for your particular model then you can get a higher price, but the opposite is also true. If there are a lot of lifts available and fewer buyers interested then you may receive less.

Benefits of Forklift Trade In Instead of Selling

Doing a forklift trade in instead of selling it privately will save you time, effort, and it will mean that you are guaranteed to sell it. You can get more for your trade in by making sure…

Is it better to do a forklift trade in or should you try to sell your forklift privately? We'll help you answer that question in this post.

Wayco has over 40 years in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

We'll list all the advantages of doing a forklift trade in and also give you some helpful advice so you can get the most out of your trade in. So, let's get going.

used forklifts.png

Learn why a forklift trade in is a great option

Advantages of Doing a Forklift Trade In

1. You Will Save Time

If you want a quick turnaround, then doing a forklift trade in as opposed to trying to sell your forklift yourself is definitely the way to go. This is especially important if you use your forklift in your business and you don't have a lot of time to invest in trying to sell it.

If you are using the profits from the sale to go towards upgrading your equipment, then you will immediately have the cash to put towards another model and your capital won't be tied up.

2. You Won't Have to Do Much

Another great advantage of doing a forklift trade in is that it requires very little effort on your part. Trying to sell your forklift privately on the other hand will mean that you have to take pictures, write up an effective advertisement, post your advertisement online, and then work with anyone who is interested in buying it.

You may have several people who want to come and see it before they decide to buy, so you will need to be available to show it to them and answer all of their questions. If you do a forklift trade in, then the dealer who takes your trade in will be responsible to put in all of the work necessary to sell it. It will be their responsibility, not yours.

sell-my-forklift-truck.jpg

Trying to sell your forklift online will take a lot of time and effort

3. You Will Have a Guaranteed Sale

If you try to sell your forklift privately, there is always the chance that you won't be successful. You could be stuck with a forklift that you just can't sell.

If, however, you trade it in, then you won't have this worry. The dealer will have taken it off your hands and you will have received an amount that you can use towards the purchase of a replacement forklift.

4. You Will Get Help to Find the Right Replacement

Trading in your forklift and then buying from a dealer means that you can take advantage of their expert advice. A reputable dealer will be looking to win you over as a loyal customer, so they will want to give you a fair price for your trade in and help you buy the perfect replacement forklift for your needs. That's how they can stay in business.

If they don't treat you right, then you won't do business with them again and you probably will let as many people as you can know about your bad experience. Reputable dealers will want to keep you as a customer and will want to maintain their good reputation.

On the other hand, if you decide to buy a forklift privately, the person selling may not treat you as fairly as a dealer who wants to stay in business.

A reputable dealer will treat you right in order to keep your business

How to Get the Most for Your Forklift Trade In

1. Give It a Good Cleaning

You probably won't be able to get your forklift as clean as it was when you first bought it, but making it look as clean as possible will help you get a better price.

Thoroughly wash all of the surfaces, inside and out, removing any dirt or visible grease. Take some time to clean around all of the components in the cab, including the seat.

2. Fully Charge the Battery

If it is an electric forklift, make sure that the battery is fully charged and functioning. After the charging is complete, add pure or distilled water to bring the electrolytes to the right level. Also, Including your charger with your trade in will increase the value of your forklift.

Some forklifts now have a convenient onboard charger so you won’t need your charger anyway.

The following video will give you some helpful tips for watering your battery

Learn how to safely water your battery after charging

3. Keep Your Forklift Well Maintained

A well-maintained forklift will fetch a much higher price than one that has been neglected. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer's guidelines for regular maintenance and have your forklift inspected at least once a year.

4. Trade in Your Forklift Before Its Value Drops Too Much

You will get the best value for your trade in if your forklift has been used for less than 10,000 hours and is less than 10 years old. After the 10,000 hour / 10 year mark, the value drops significantly, so it is better to trade it in before this.

Need to Replace your Scrap Forklift? Here Are some Helpful Tips

Before you purchase a pre-owned forklift, there are some things that you should consider and questions you should ask. Here are some tips to help you.

Tip #1: Find out if they offer financing

Some dealers will offer financing not only for their new models but also for their pre-owned ones. A forklift is a large purchase, even if you are buying a used one.

This is a great option if you don't have enough capital to buy a forklift outright, so you can spread out your payments over a longer period of time.

Tip #2: Ask how many hours it has been used

A newer model that has a high number of hours clocked will not be as good of a purchase as one of the same age with fewer hours.

Sometimes you can get a great deal on a demo model that has an incredibly small number of hours.

sm437652687_20200730_094002_2107856_resized_1.jpeg.png

Lower hours is a good thing for a used forklift

Tip #3: Purchase a forklift with a warranty

A warranty gives you some peace of mind, especially when you are purchasing something that is used. A dealer who has put a warranty on their used vehicle must feel quite confident that it is in good shape.

Tip #4: Find out if they offer delivery

Forklifts are heavy equipment and you can't simply drive them down the highway like you can a car. It's very helpful to buy a used forklift from a company that will deliver it to your location.

If you have to arrange for delivery yourself, then you need to consider the cost of delivery and add it to the final price of your equipment.

Tip # 5: COMPARE THE PRICE ON NEW MODELS

You may think that if you buy a used forklift, it will be cheaper than buying a new one and generally that is the case.

However, some new forklifts, such as those manufactured by Hangcha are priced significantly lower than other new forklifts. Hangcha forklifts match or even exceed the quality of other top brands and their low price makes them a great affordable alternative to buying used.

Who Buys Used Forklifts Near Me?

Who buys used forklifts near me? Forklift dealerships and companies that use forklifts. If you sell to a dealership then it will take less effort and will get your money right away, plus...

Who buys used forklifts near me? There are a couple of options including forklift dealerships and companies that use forklifts.

We have been in the material handling industry for over 40 years and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

We'll take a look at your options for selling your forklift and outline the advantages and disadvantages of each. So, let's get started.

Who Buys Used Forklifts Near Me? Options

There are two options if you are looking for someone to purchase your used forklift. You can contact a forklift dealer who will buy it from you and then sell it or you can try to find someone yourself who is looking to buy a forklift.

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.

Disadvantage of selling your forklift to a dealer

Lower Price

Price can be both an advantage and disadvantage when you choose to have a dealer buy your used forklift. You will most likely get a higher price if you sell it yourself, however, if you are not sure about the actual value of your forklift, you may not get the price that you deserve.

However, if you find a local reputable dealer, it will help ensure you get a fair price.

Advantages of selling your forklift to a dealer

No Hassel

The biggest advantage of selling your forklift to a dealer "who buys used forklifts near me" is that it is the easiest route to take. You won't have to invest a lot of time and effort into trying to sell your forklift yourself.

You will get your money right away and you won't have all of the hassles of having to promote your forklift, find potential buyers, and negotiate a price.

used forklifts.png

Who buys used forklifts near me? Contact a local dealership

Fair Price

You might think that the price should be a disadvantage because the dealer will need to get their cut on the sale. However, if you take into account the cost of the time that you will have to take in order to sell your forklift yourself, you will find that difference in price is well worth it.

If you choose a reputable local dealer who has been in the industry for a long time, then you should get a fair price for your forklift. This is because they want to make sure that they maintain a good reputation in the industry.

Trade-in Options

If you are looking to replace your used forklift with a new or newer option, then a dealer can help you get the best selection. Work with a dealer that will let you use your forklift as a trade-in so that you can get the best deal on your purchase.

proindex04-1.jpg

A good dealer will take your old forklift as a trade-in on a new one

Financing Options

If money is tight, dealerships often have a financing option that you can take advantage of that you won't get if you purchase a used forklift privately.

Knowledgeable Advice

Dealerships will also be up-to-date and knowledgeable on the most recent models and features and will be able to help you make the perfect choice for your needs.

A dealership can give you helpful advice when choosing another forklift

Disadvantages of Finding Your Own Buyer

Finding Buyers

If you are selling a used forklift, you will need to find buyers yourself. There are fewer local buyers for forklifts than there are for personal vehicles like cars, so you will want to advertise your forklift to a wide audience.

Selling it online is your best choice for attracting the widest audience. There are a number of popular online sites where you can list your forklift. The top two are Kijiji and Auto Trader.

Where Can I Sell a Forklift.jpg

Who buys used forklifts near me? You can find buyers online

Time

The biggest disadvantage to selling your forklift yourself is that it takes a lot of time and effort. If you need to sell quickly and you don't have a lot of spare time, then you might not want to try to sell your forklift yourself.

Negotiating

There is an art to negotiating when you are selling a used forklift. Be prepared that whatever price you set for your forklift, your potential buyers are probably going to try and talk you down.

You might want to take that into consideration when you are setting your initial price. If you aren't comfortable with negotiating, then you might find this process awkward.

You may find it difficult to negotiate a good price

Advantage of Finding Your Own Buyer

Higher Price

The biggest advantage of finding your own buyer is that you should get more money for it. If you have the time and you are a good negotiator, then you could do quite well on the deal.

How to Set the Right Price for Your Forklift

One of the most difficult parts of selling your forklift is setting the right price on it. You want to get as much as you can for it, but you also want to price it competitively so that it won't take too long to sell.

Research other forklifts for sale:

You can do some research online to see what other similar forklifts are going for. However, you may have a hard time finding many to compare yours too as the selection will probably be limited.

75329 Hyster H50FT .jpg

The condition of your forklift will affect the price

Factors that will affect the price:

When setting your price, you need to take into consideration a number of key factors, such as:

Capacity: The higher the lifting capacity, usually the higher the price for the forklift.

Hours used: Like mileage on a car, if your forklift has higher working hours on it, then that will lower the price.

Type of forklift: Generally an electric forklift will cost more than a propane one.

Forks: If your forks have cracks, bends or if they show signs of wearing in the fork heels, then the price will be lower.

Overall condition of the forklift: The overall condition of your forklift will affect the price as well. The lift chains, hoses, mast rails and mast rollers need to be in good shape to get a higher price.

Also, the condition of your tires will affect the price; if your forklift needs new tires then you will get a lower price.

Where Can I Sell a Forklift?

Where Can I Sell a Forklift? You can sell it yourself online or you can go to a reputable dealer - both options have pros and cons. For example, selling online will take time and effort so if you need a quick sale, it might not be your best option.

Where Can I Sell a Forklift?

If you have a forklift that you want to sell, you basically have two choices. You can sell it yourself or you can sell it to a forklift dealer who will then sell it to someone else. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options.

Pros and Cons of Selling Your Forklift Yourself

Pro - Better Price: If you choose to sell your forklift yourself self then the biggest advantage is that you should get a better price.

Con - Negotiating: If you aren't familiar with current forklift prices and you aren't used to negotiations, then you might not get the price that you deserve.

Con - Time: The biggest disadvantage to selling your forklift yourself is that it takes a lot of time and effort. If you need to sell quickly and you don't have a lot of spare time, then you might not want to try to sell your forklift yourself.

Pros and Cons of Selling Your Forklift to a Forklift Dealer

Pro - Price: A reputable forklift dealer that has been in business for a long time will usually offer you a good price for your forklift. This is because they want to make sure that they maintain a good reputation in the industry. The difference in the price that you get selling it yourself will go towards the time the dealer has to invest in selling your forklift for you.

Pro - Fast Sale: The biggest advantage of selling to a dealer is that you will get your money fast and you won't have all of the hassle of having to promote your forklift, find potential buyers, and negotiate a price.

Pro - Options for Replacement: Another great advantage of selling to a dealer is that if you need to replace the forklift that you are selling, you can do the deal all in one place. A dealer can help you choose the right forklift for your needs and will be up to date on the latest models and features available.

Con - Price: The biggest disadvantage to selling your used forklift to a dealer is that you might not get as much money for your forklift as you would if you sold it yourself. The dealer has to make some money selling it to someone else otherwise it's not worth their while to buy it from you.

You can sell your forklift online yourself

Where Can I Sell a Forklift Myself Online?

There are fewer local buyers for forklifts than there are for personal vehicles like cars, so you will want to advertise your forklift to a wide audience. Selling it online is your best choice for attracting the widest audience. There are a number of popular online sites where you can list your forklift. The top two are Kijiji and Auto Trader.

Kijiji:

Kijiji will let you post an ad for free. It will run for 60 days and then you will have to re-post if your forklift hasn't sold by then. However, there are limits to how many ads you can post in each category. If you are posting multiple ads in the same category and you go over the limit, then you will need to pay for the extra ads.

Tip: If you want to sell your forklift faster, you might want to pay to promote it on Kijiji. The cost of promoting your ad will depend on the feature, city and category that you are posting in.

If others are promoting their ads as well then the price will be higher, however, if you are trying to sell your forklift fast, then you might decide that it is worth paying for this service.

You can sell a forklift online through Kijiji and Auto Trader

Auto Trader:

If you want to sell your forklift privately, Auto Trader is a great option. Similar to Kijiji, you can also place a free ad on their site.

Tip: Be sure to take good, clear photos of your forklift from different angles to upload. You are allowed to upload up to 15 photos of your forklift so take advantage of this.

Where Can I Sell a Forklift to a Dealer?

Check Reviews: If you want to sell your forklift to a dealer, make sure that you choose one that has a good reputation. You should do some research online and check out reviews of the dealers that you are considering in order to see if others have had a good experience with that dealer.

Check Websites: Check out their website to see if they sell used forklifts. Some dealers only sell new equipment. A good dealer will also take your used forklift in as a trade-in toward a new model.

Check How Long They’ve Been in Business: You should also take into consideration how long they have been in business. A reputable dealer can stay in business much longer than one that doesn't have a good reputation.

A reputable dealer that has been in the industry for a long time will be very familiar with the prices of used forklifts and will do their best to give you a fair price on yours.

Setting Your Price

Probably the most difficult part of selling your forklift is setting your price. You want to get as much as you can for it, but you also want to price it competitively so that it won't take too long to sell.

There are a number of factors that will affect the price of your forklift, these include:

What to Do When Buying a Used Forklift

Buying a used forklift is similar to buying a used car. There are many choices out there, and they all may look okay at a first glance, but how can you know that you aren't buying a lemon that's not going to last?

Here are some guidelines to follow.

Parts to Inspect When Purchasing a Used Forklift

When purchasing a used forklift, there are some key parts or signs that you should look for that will indicate the quality of the unit that you are looking at.

forklift heel.jpg

Check for signs of wear on the fork heels

Check the Forks

The forks are one of the most important parts of your forklift. You want to make sure that they are in good shape and are sturdy enough to handle the loads that you require. When you are inspecting a used forklift check for:

Cracks: Cracks in the forks could mean that the forklift was used to carry loads over its listed capacity. If the cracks are large and deep, then it could mean that it's unsafe for the forklift to carry loads at full capacity.

Wearing on the Fork Heels: Check that the fork heels are about the same thickness as the upright portion of the fork shank that is attached to the hanger. If they are thinner then that means that they are starting to wear and they won't be as strong as they should be.

Bends: A bend in the forks could be an indication that the forklift was overloaded. If there is a major bend then that Is a sign of concern, however, if it is a minor bend then you could get it straightened out.

forklift mast.jpg

Look over the various parts of the mast

Check the Mast

The mast, also known as the 'upright', does the actual lifting and tilting of your loads, so you want to make sure that it is in good shape. You should take a good look at the following during your inspection:

Lift Chains: Check to see that the lift chains are not missing any links or anchor pins and that there is no visible damage. You should also check that the tension on the chains is equally distributed.

Hoses: Look all over the hoses that run parallel to the lift chains for any signs of hydraulic fluid leaking out.

Mast Rails: Ensure that there are no cracks or welds in the mast rails.

Mast Rollers: Take a look at the shape of the mast rollers, they should be round. If they are more of a compressed oval shape, then that means they are worn out.

tires - 10000.png

Check that the tires are in good shape

Check the Body and Frame

Next, you should take a good look at the overall body and frame of the used forklift. Take a walk around it and look for any visible signs of damage. Take note of the following:

Tires: Check the tires for any signs of wearing. For instance, make sure that there are no chunks of rubber missing from them and if they are pneumatic tires, that they still have a good amount of tread left on them. You should also make sure that they aren't missing any lug nuts.

canopy.jpg

Check the canopy for any signs of damage

Canopy: Make sure that the canopy (the framed structure that surrounds the operator) is free of damage.

You should look for any bends or damage to the supports of the canopy that might mean that it won't be as effective in protecting your operator if there is a rollover or if the load is dropped.

Cab: If the cab of the used forklift has windows, make sure that they are not broken or missing.

Chassis: Take a close look at the chassis to see if there are any cracks, welds, or other signs of modifications.

forklift test drive.jpg

During your test drive, lift and lower the forks to different positions

Test Out the Used Forklift

Once you've done a visual inspection, it is a good idea to actually test out the various features of the used forklift.

Engine: Turn on the engine and listen to see if it makes any unusual noises.

Hydraulic Levers: Lift and lower the loading arms through all the possible positions to ensure that they are working properly and smoothly.

Seat and Seatbelt: Check that the seatbelt fastens properly and that it is in good condition. Move around in the seat to make sure that it is securely fastened to the floor.

Take a Test Drive: Take a test drive of the used forklift to see how well it steers and if the brakes are working well. Make sure you go backwards, forwards and in circular patterns to give yourself a thorough idea of how it handles.

engine.jpg
lead-acid battery.jpg

Look under the hood and check the condition of the battery

Look Under the Hood

Once you have finished your test drive, turn off the forklift and take a look under the hood. You should look at the following:

Belts: Check to see that the belts are not cracked or worn out and that they fit tightly.

Hoses: Ensure that there are no cracks, leaks, or dirt buildup on the hoses in the engine.

Oil: Pull out the dipstick and check the colour and the level of the oil.

Filter: Check to make sure that the air filter is clean.

For Electric Forklifts: Inspect all of the battery connections to make sure that they are in good condition.

For Propane Forklifts: Take a look at the bolts and brackets that hold the propane tank to see that they are solid and in good condition.

This is a great option if you don't have enough capital to buy it outright, so you can spread out your payments over a longer period of time.

Benefits of Buying a Used Forklift Instead of a New One

used Komatsu FG25ST-16 small.png
used Komatsu FB18MU-12.png

There are many great reasons to purchase a pre-owned forklift instead of a new one. They include:

1. Cost Savings:

Buying a new forklift is a huge investment. If your budget is limited, then choosing a used model could be the better option for you. You can often get a used forklift for about half the price of a new one.

2. Buying Power:

If you have a limited amount to spend on a forklift, then you may have to settle for a lower quality forklift if you are buying new. For the same amount of money, you may be able to get a better quality used forklift that will meet your needs better.

You could save a lot of money by buying a used forklift

3. Familiar Design:

Purchasing new often means getting a forklift that is designed differently and will require additional training for your operators. If you purchase used, you can get the type of equipment that your operators are already familiar with.

4. Ease of Finding Parts:

It's often harder to find parts for new forklifts. Because used forklifts have been around longer, it's usually easier to get replacement parts for them.

Find out what’s the best forklift for your industry

Best Forklift for Manufacturing Companies and Construction Sites

Many manufacturers and construction projects require forklifts to handle heavy raw materials such as lumber, steel, concrete, etc. For this reason, you will want a heavy duty forklift with high lifting capacities.

You probably will also want to look for a forklift with pneumatic tires that are designed to easily maneuver over rough or uneven surfaces found outdoors.

  • Wet Disc Brakes

2. EcoMaxx Stärke Heavy Duty Pneumatic Lift Truck

Starke-heavy-duty.jpeg

The EcoMaxx from Stärke is also designed to handle the rugged conditions of a construction site with:

  • Capacity 8,000 lbs to 22,000 lbs

  • Pneumatic Tires

  • Wide View Mast

  • Solid Overhead Guard

  • Rugged Power Train

3. Hyster H155FT

image-asset.png

The Hyster would also make a great addition to your manufacturing or warehouse application with its:

  • 15,500 lb. capacity

  • Diesel Pneumatic Forklift

  • 2 stage mast

  • Dual Tire

Best Forklift for Large Warehouses

If you have a larger warehouse with elevated storage areas, you will usually require a forklift that is designed to lift to higher heights.

If you need your forklift to operate mostly inside your warehouse, then choosing one with cushion tires designed to easily move over smooth, even surfaces is also a good idea.

1. STÄRKE Cushion Forklift XVI Series

Starke_Pro_FG25P_XVI_Series_Front_Left_HiRes.png

This forklift has the power to lift your heavy products high and the tires to work well on a smooth surface. It features:

  • Capacity 4,000 lbs to 7,700 lbs

  • Mast Height:270"

  • LPG, Gas, Diesel, Dual fuel (Gas/LPG)

2. Komatsu FR50 Series Reach Truck

Komatsu-reach-truck.jpg

A reach truck is perfect if you have tight, high spaces to reach in your warehouse. This one features:

  • Capacity 3,000 lbs / 3,500 lbs / 4,500 lbs

  • Up to 380" mast height

  • Single reach or double reach options

3. Stärke LiftMaxx OPS30 Electric Order Picker

Starke_LiftMaxx_OPS30-600x384.png

Order pickers can lift workers and loads to high locations to select products. This electric model features:

  • Capacity 3,000 lbs

  • Excellent ramp and grade performance

  • Low center of gravity for stability

Best Forklift for Retail Stores and Smaller Warehouses

Walkies and stackers are the best forklift type for a retail or smaller warehouse setting. You can easily use walkies and stackers to move your products in your retail store out of trailers to low-level racking or out onto your retail selling floor.

These types of forklifts work well in a retail setting because they are smaller and can maneuver around the tighter spaces in a store.

They also work well because you don't need to move your product over long distances nor do you need to lift it very high.

The handles help you control the speed, steering, and lifting and because you are walking, they aren't going fast enough to be a safety issue for customers or other staff.

1. Stärke LiftMaxx 4500 lb PT45MXA Electric Walkie Pallet Truck

Starke_LiftMaxx_PT30MXA-800x677-1-600x384+(1).png

This walkie pallet is very easy to move around smaller spaces and has:

  • Capacity 4,500 lbs

  • On-board Charger

  • Maintenance Free Batteries

2. Starke LiftMaxx EMSA3300X Semi-Electric Straddle Stacker

Starke_LiftMaxx_EMSA3300X-550-x-657-1-500x384.png

A stacker removes the need to hand bomb products from trailers at street level. This one also includes:

  • Fully adjustable forks and straddle legs

  • Semi-electric / manual push pull functions

  • Powered lift

3. Pre-owned Crown PC3520-60 Walkie Pallet

75214-Yale-Electric-Pallet-MPW060-792x650-600x384.png

If you are on a budget, why not consider purchasing a good used forklift like this one, which has:

  • 6,000 lb. capacity

  • Electric 24V

  • 48″ forks

Tips for First Time Buyers so You Get the Best Forklift

1. Purchase from a well-established supplier: Go to a local forklift supplier who has been in the industry and has a solid, established reputation in the industry. They will know what they are talking about and will be able to best advise you on your purchase.

2. Choose a company that offers great warranties: Make sure you select a forklift that comes with a great warranty. A manufacturer will back up their quality product with a warranty because they know that it is good.

3. Check out online reviews: Go online and check out the reviews of the forklift company that you are considering using and see what their previous customers have to say about them: whether they are reliable, whether their pricing is fair, and if they stand by their products.

Heavy Forklift Trucks: What You Need To Know

Learn about heavy forklift trucks and if that type of forklift is right for your application. They are perfect for construction sites, railway and ship yards, farms and more!

Today we are going to explain what a heavy forklift is.

We have over 40 years experience in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise with you.

In this post, we will describe what a heavy forklift is, how they are used, and what to look for when purchasing one. So, let's get going.

What Is a Heavy Forklift?

A heavy forklift can also be called an industrial forklift or a large capacity forklift. This type of lift truck is used to lift, move, and place very heavy loads. They are usually much larger than electric warehouse forklifts.

komatsu-heavy-forklift.png

Heavy forklifts are also called industrial or large capacity forklifts - Source: Komatsu

They can be 10 ft or more in length and almost always have an internal combustion engine to give them more power. They are often used for industrial and construction applications.

A heavy forklift functions similarly to a warehouse forklift. However, it can lift its loads much higher off the ground than a regular warehouse forklift, and it is capable of lifting much heavier loads.

Lifting capacity

Lifting capacity refers to the amount of weight that a forklift can safely carry. If a forklift carries more than its maximum lifting capacity then it can become unstable.

heavy-forklift.jpg

If you need to move heavy loads, choose an industrial forklift

Industrial forklifts are able to handle incredible weights from 22,000 lbs to 30,000 lbs and higher depending on the model. This makes them great for heavy duty lifting jobs.

Types of Industries that Use Heavy Forklifts

You don't need a heavy forklift for your average warehouse application. They are, however, perfect for industries that have very heavy products and rough terrain.

Warehouses: Even though most warehouses do not require the use of an industrial heavy forklift, if your facility handles extremely heavy products, then an industrial forklift may be a good choice for you.

Construction Sites: You will often see a heavy forklift on a construction site. That's because they are capable of lifting and moving the heavy building materials required, such as concrete and metals. It is also well suited to the rough terrain found on building sites.

Heavy forklifts are perfect for construction site lifting

Railways: Another industry that may use a heavy forklift is the railway. Railways often transport heavy cargo as well as shipping containers, so an industrial forklift is needed to be able to move, lift, load, and unload this type of heavy cargo.

Ports: Like railways, shipping ports and dry docks use heavy forklifts to load and unload their cargo and shipping containers as well.

Farms: Often, an industrial forklift is used on a farm to lift bales of hay. Hay may not be as heavy as the other materials we've mentioned. However, an industrial forklift is needed to lift and place them higher than a regular forklift would be able to.

What to Look for When Purchasing a Heavy Forklift

Maximum Load Capacity:

There are a wide range of load capacities when it comes to forklifts. You should choose a forklift that is able to handle the weights that you are going to be lifting.

It is a good idea to get a forklift that is slightly more powerful than you actually need. This is because if your lift truck is constantly lifting at its maximum weight capacity, it will use a lot of energy and it will be harder on the machine.

For example, if most of the loads that you require moving are around 8,000 lbs, then you should choose a forklift with a maximum capacity of more than 8,000 lbs.

Maximum Lift Height:

forklift-attachments.png

Forklift attachments will make your machine more versatile

Different forklift models have different load lifting heights. Figure out how high you need your loads lifted before choosing your forklift. Measure your worksite and get a forklift that can reach that high.

Forklift Attachments:

You can purchase forklift attachments for your heavy forklift that will increase its capabilities and flexibility.

For example, you can add a forklift boom, which will allow your forklift to lift from above instead of from below. Clamps let you move oddly shaped items safely, and fork extensions allow you to lift larger loads.

Working Environment:

If you need your heavy forklift to operate outdoors on rough or uneven ground, then choose a forklift that can handle these types of surfaces. A rough terrain forklift will be equipped with pneumatic tires that are better than cushion tires for these types of surfaces.

If you are using it on a construction site with sharp debris that could damage your tires, you might also want to get solid as opposed to air filled tires so that they are more puncture-resistant.

Looking for a heavy forklift? Contact Wayco

Consider the places where you will need your forklift to go. If it will be operating in narrow spaces or tight corners, make sure that the model you choose has the maneuverability and is the right size to fit in these spots.

Looking for a Quality Pre-Owned Heavy Forklift? Trust Wayco

If you need additional, heavy forklift equipment, why not consider buying used? Pre-owned heavy forklifts require a much smaller investment to purchase than new, so they make sense if you just need them for a temporary increase in volume.

If you are looking for a high quality, well-priced pre-owned forklift, trust Wayco. Wayco makes it possible to purchase pre-owned heavy forklifts and other forklift equipment with confidence. How do we do that?

Wayco+Logo.png

We thoroughly check every used vehicle

Wayco takes the worry out of purchasing used equipment. Before we sell any pre-owned vehicle, we thoroughly check each one to make sure that it's in top working order.

We certify every used vehicle

We then certify all of our used inventory, so you can be confident that you are purchasing a used forklift that you can rely on to be in great condition!

We offer incredible warranties

At Wayco, we want to make sure that you are completely satisfied with your used forklift purchase.

That's why in addition to inspecting and certifying all of our pre-owned vehicles, we also offer incredible warranties to further assure you that you are purchasing a forklift you can trust.

Looking for the best deal on quality used forklift equipment? Contact Wayco today!

Better Value than New

Buying used can be a wise investment. Just like a brand new car, the moment you drive your new forklift off the lot, it loses value. Quality used forklifts depreciate at a much slower rate so they are often the better choice.

Immediate Delivery

Used forklift equipment can usually be delivered immediately, but if you order new equipment, you often have to wait 4-12 weeks before you get it, depending on the model and the manufacturer. So if you need your equipment immediately, used is the way to go.

“I have used Wayco twice, and both times I experienced excellent customer service. They had the right forklift for my needs at a reasonable price. I will be using their services in the future and recommend you do as well.”

New or Used - Which Is the Right Choice for Your Business

The decision to buy new or used equipment will depend on your particular need and financial situation. There are times when purchasing a previously owned forklift makes more sense than buying brand new.

Used May Offer You Better Value than New:

Buying used can often be a very wise decision. Just like a brand new car, the moment you drive your new forklift off the lot, it loses value. Quality used forklifts depreciate at a much slower rate so they are often the better choice.

You Require a Smaller Investment

If you need extra forklift equipment, why not consider buying used? Pre-owned forklifts require a much smaller investment to purchase than new, so they make sense if you just need them for a temporary increase in volume.

You Can Get Your Used Forklift Faster:

Used forklift equipment can usually be delivered immediately, but if you order new equipment, you often have to wait 4-12 weeks before you get it, depending on the model and the manufacturer. So if you need your equipment immediately, used is the way to go.

Rough Terrain Forklift - What You Need to Know

This comprehensive guide will outline the different types of rough terrain forklift trucks, including how they are used, and where you can find the most affordable pre-owned models.

Today we are going to explain what a rough terrain forklift is.

We have over 40 years in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

This comprehensive guide will outline the different types of rough terrain forklift trucks and how they are used. So, let's get started.

rough-terrain-forklift-truck.jpg

A rough terrain forklift can be used on rough and uneven surfaces.

What Is a Rough Terrain Forklift?

Forklifts are categorized into 7 different classes. Class VII refers to all rough terrain forklift trucks.

A rough terrain forklift truck is one that is designed to operate on rough, natural terrain, unpaved surfaces, and disturbed or dug-up surfaces such as those found on construction sites.

They are also often used for military applications. However, this does not mean that a rough terrain forklift can be operated safely over any type of difficult surface.

Make sure that you consult your owner’s manual to see if your forklift is capable of operating on the type of terrain at your workplace.

Types of Rough Terrain Forklifts

Vertical Mast: The vertical mast forklift has, as its name suggests, a vertical mast that will lift your load up and down vertically.

Variable Reach: This type of rough terrain forklift has a telescoping boom that allows it to reach out in front of your forklift, giving you more flexibility with the exact placement of your load. The larger models are able to reach up to 12m vertically, and 7m or more in front of your machine. They also have lifting capacities of up to 4,540kg.

Truck/Trailer Mounted: This final type of rough terrain forklift is transported to your job site, mounted to the back of a truck/trailer.

Once it is unloaded, it is used to move and unload heavy items from the truck/trailer at the job site. However, not all truck/trailer mounted forklifts are designed for use on rough terrain.

Vertical mast forklifts raise and lower their loads vertically.

Features of a Rough Terrain Forklift

Pneumatic Tires: Rough terrain forklifts are equipped with large, pneumatic tires that help them safely navigate over uneven and very rough surfaces.

Often, these types of tires will be filled with foam instead of air to make them more durable and puncture-resistant around sharp objects like nails or glass found around construction sites.

Learn more about the difference between forklift tires in our post "Forklift Tires: Cushion, Solid Pneumatic and Air Pneumatic."

Internal Combustion Engine: A rough terrain forklift will usually be powered by an internal combustion engine that runs on either gas, diesel, or propane.

Low Profile: Many rough terrain forklifts are designed with a very low profile so they can pass through openings in structures as low as 2m in order to go inside buildings.

Various Steering: You can get rough terrain forklifts with various steering configurations, such as two-wheel and four-wheel steering. There is even a four-wheel crab steering option that lets you turn all wheels in the same direction.

Attachments for Your Rough Terrain Forklift

A wide variety of attachments have been developed to improve the functionality of a rough terrain forklift.

Winches, Booms and Rotating Fork Carriages: Winches, booms and rotating fork carriages are designed to enable your forklift to place its load more accurately.

Articulating Booms: Articulating booms have two separate extendible arms that will allow you to lift your load up and over obstacles or structures in order to place it on an interior roof slope or in the middle of an upper floor.

The following video will demonstrate how a forklift boom attachment works.

A forklift boom can be attached to the front of your forklift to help you place objects more accurately.

Komatsu is a world-leading forklift manufacturer. They build strong and durable rough terrain forklifts that are capable of operating on the toughest of surfaces. Their FH-2 series is specially designed to handle the rigours of any construction site.

Stärke's XVI 20-35 professional series forklifts range from 4,000 to 7,700 lbs in capacity. They are suited to a wide variety of work environments without sacrificing operator comfort or performance.

Hours: Mon to Fri 7:30am to 4:30pm

Today we're going to help you find the best used forklift truck dealer Kitchener has to offer.

We have over 40 years in the forklift industry and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

In this post, we'll take a close look at how you can find the best used forklift truck dealer in Kitchener and the specifics of what to look for. So, let's get started.

Used Forklift Truck Dealer Kitchener: Find the Best

1. Do Online Research and Assess Google Reviews

You can start your search for the best used forklift truck dealer Kitchener has to offer without even leaving your office. Simply go online and take a look at Google reviews for used forklift dealers in Kitchener.

Reading through these reviews will give you a pretty good idea about the customer service and quality of used vehicles that each company has to offer.

If a company has a lot of bad reviews, you probably don't want to use them. However, if their reviews are mostly positive, you can keep them on your list.

2. Seek Out Recommendations from Trusted Industry Colleagues

Contact any local industry colleagues that you trust and ask them for their recommendations of the best used forklift truck dealers that they have used in the past.

It's good to get the opinions of someone you know and can rely on to give you an honest report about the service and quality of equipment that they have purchased.

They will probably also be even more willing to let you know about any bad experiences they have had with used forklift truck dealers in the past.

According to a survey found on Marketingcharts.com, 95% of consumers who had a bad experience said they told someone about it, while only 87% of consumers who had a good experience told someone about it.

Contact trusted colleagues to get their recommendations

3. Set Up a Meeting with Prospective Dealers to Discuss Options

Once you have a short list of potential used forklift dealerships, set up a face-to-face meeting with each one to discuss the different options that they offer.

Meeting in person will give you a better sense of whether this is a company you want to do business with. Write down any questions you may have so that you remember to ask them all during this meeting.

4. Find Out if They Offer Financing

During your face-to-face meeting, ask whether or not they offer financing. Top used forklift dealers will not only let you finance the purchase of new equipment, but will also have this option for their pre-owned line. A used forklift purchase is still a sizeable investment, so being able to finance it is a huge advantage!

Choose a dealership that offers financing and inspects their used vehicles

5. Find out if They Inspect and Certify Their Used Vehicles

One of the big worries when purchasing a used vehicle is whether or not you are getting a "lemon." If the dealership inspects and certifies their used vehicles, you can be more confident that you are getting a quality forklift.

6. Ask About Warranties

Not all used forklift truck dealers will offer warranties. If they do, though, it will give you even more peace of mind that you are buying a quality product.

Find out what their warranty covers and how long it lasts. A really good warranty will cover the larger, more costly repairs.

7. Take a Look at Their Selection of Vehicles

Have a look at their selection of vehicles. See if they have the type of used lifting device that you require, and if they have the lifting capacity to also meet your needs.

8. Assess Follow-up Service and Maintenance options

When choosing the best used forklift dealer Kitchener has to offer, take a look at what they offer in terms of follow-up services and maintenance.

It's a good idea to select a dealership that will not only sell you a used vehicle but will be there when it does need servicing.

In addition, used forklifts, like new forklifts, also need regular preventative maintenance to keep them running in top condition. This also makes sure they are up-to-date with current safety regulations.

Find out if the dealership offers this kind of service and if they follow all Ministry of Labour and the Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations.
