Find out why these are the best forklifts for the automation industry

What Are the Best Forklifts for the Automation Industry?

Today almost every type of industry uses automation including factories, automotive plants, manufacturers, etc.

When choosing the best forklift for the automation industry and the one that suits your needs best, it is important to consider the size of the forklift, its lifting capabilities, its function, and its fuel source.

Here are some great options and why they would make a good choice.

Why Narrow Aisle Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the Automation Industry

Size:

Just by their name, you can immediately tell that a narrow aisle forklift is going to work well in really tight spaces. If you have automation in your facility then your space is probably quite limited. Choosing a forklift that can handle tight corners and narrow passageways is a great option for these situations.

Lifting Capacities:

Narrow aisle reach trucks usually have lifting capacities of 2,500lbs to 5,000 lbs. Roof and rack heights vary between facilities. You want to purchase a forklift that can reach high enough to accommodate for your highest racking.

The great thing about a reach truck is that they are able to reach much higher than an ordinary forklift, so if you need to access products or materials at great heights then a reach truck is a great choice.

Fuel Source:

Reach trucks are often electric, which makes them the perfect choice for indoor applications as they don't give off harmful fumes. If you choose one with an onboard charger, then you can also greatly reduce any downtime for recharging your battery..

Narrow aisle forklifts work great in tight spaces

Why 3-Wheeled Electric Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the Automation Industry

Size:

3-wheel forklifts are more maneuverable and require less space to operate than forklifts with 4 wheels. Because of their 3-wheeled design, they have a much tighter turning radius than a traditional 4-wheel forklift.

In addition, you can choose a stand-up version that has the operator stand up instead of sitting in a cab which means that the dimensions of the forklift are even smaller, making it great for fitting into tighter spaces.

Fuel Source:

Because they are electric, they are a safer choice for indoor applications, unlike propane and diesel forklifts. If you choose an electric forklift that has a lithium-ion battery, then your charging times are much quicker and they are less complicated to charge than a lead-acid battery powered forklift. You will also save on the space required for a forklift battery charging station.

cushion tires:

Make sure you also choose an electric forklift that has cushion tires. Cushion tires are smaller than pneumatic tires, which means that your forklift will be lower to the ground, thus decreasing its turning radius even further. In addition, cushion tires are better suited for indoor flooring as well.

Check out this 3-wheeled electric forklift by Hangcha in action:

Why Electric Counterbalance Forklifts Are One of the Best Forklifts for the Automation Industry

Lifting Capabilities:

If you need more lifting capacity for your forklift, then an electric counterbalance is a great choice. You can get models that have capacities from 4,000 to 35,000 lbs. However, the more lifting capacity a forklift has, the larger the forklift will be, so it may not fit in your facility.

Fuel Source:

In the past, in order to get a forklift with higher lifting capacities, you would need to purchase one with an internal combustion engine. Your only choice then for inside applications would have been a propane fuel forklift that would require you to have proper ventilation to counteract any emissions.

However, with the advancement of technology and the use of lithium-ion batteries, it is now possible to get electric forklifts that are safe to use inside and have the strength to handle heavier loads.

Indoor/Outdoor Versatility:

If your automation industry requires your forklift to operate both indoors and outdoors, an electric model can work quite well, especially if it has been designed to work in wet and cold conditions.

For example, if you need your forklift to pick up raw materials that are stored outside of your facility and then bring them into the production line, an electric counterbalance forklift will do the trick.

Benefits of Forklift Trade In Instead of Selling

Doing a forklift trade in instead of selling it privately will save you time, effort, and it will mean that you are guaranteed to sell it. You can get more for your trade in by making sure…

Is it better to do a forklift trade in or should you try to sell your forklift privately? We'll help you answer that question in this post.

Wayco has over 40 years in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

We'll list all the advantages of doing a forklift trade in and also give you some helpful advice so you can get the most out of your trade in. So, let's get going.

used forklifts.png

Learn why a forklift trade in is a great option

Advantages of Doing a Forklift Trade In

1. You Will Save Time

If you want a quick turnaround, then doing a forklift trade in as opposed to trying to sell your forklift yourself is definitely the way to go. This is especially important if you use your forklift in your business and you don't have a lot of time to invest in trying to sell it.

If you are using the profits from the sale to go towards upgrading your equipment, then you will immediately have the cash to put towards another model and your capital won't be tied up.

2. You Won't Have to Do Much

Another great advantage of doing a forklift trade in is that it requires very little effort on your part. Trying to sell your forklift privately on the other hand will mean that you have to take pictures, write up an effective advertisement, post your advertisement online, and then work with anyone who is interested in buying it.

You may have several people who want to come and see it before they decide to buy, so you will need to be available to show it to them and answer all of their questions. If you do a forklift trade in, then the dealer who takes your trade in will be responsible to put in all of the work necessary to sell it. It will be their responsibility, not yours.

sell-my-forklift-truck.jpg

Trying to sell your forklift online will take a lot of time and effort

3. You Will Have a Guaranteed Sale

If you try to sell your forklift privately, there is always the chance that you won't be successful. You could be stuck with a forklift that you just can't sell.

If, however, you trade it in, then you won't have this worry. The dealer will have taken it off your hands and you will have received an amount that you can use towards the purchase of a replacement forklift.

4. You Will Get Help to Find the Right Replacement

Trading in your forklift and then buying from a dealer means that you can take advantage of their expert advice. A reputable dealer will be looking to win you over as a loyal customer, so they will want to give you a fair price for your trade in and help you buy the perfect replacement forklift for your needs. That's how they can stay in business.

If they don't treat you right, then you won't do business with them again and you probably will let as many people as you can know about your bad experience. Reputable dealers will want to keep you as a customer and will want to maintain their good reputation.

On the other hand, if you decide to buy a forklift privately, the person selling may not treat you as fairly as a dealer who wants to stay in business.

How to Get the Most for Your Forklift Trade In

1. Give It a Good Cleaning

You probably won't be able to get your forklift as clean as it was when you first bought it, but making it look as clean as possible will help you get a better price.

Thoroughly wash all of the surfaces, inside and out, removing any dirt or visible grease. Take some time to clean around all of the components in the cab, including the seat.

2. Fully Charge the Battery

If it is an electric forklift, make sure that the battery is fully charged and functioning. After the charging is complete, add pure or distilled water to bring the electrolytes to the right level. Also, Including your charger with your trade in will increase the value of your forklift.

Some forklifts now have a convenient onboard charger so you won’t need your charger anyway.

The following video will give you some helpful tips for watering your battery

Learn how to safely water your battery after charging

3. Keep Your Forklift Well Maintained

A well-maintained forklift will fetch a much higher price than one that has been neglected. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer's guidelines for regular maintenance and have your forklift inspected at least once a year.

4. Trade in Your Forklift Before Its Value Drops Too Much

You will get the best value for your trade in if your forklift has been used for less than 10,000 hours and is less than 10 years old. After the 10,000 hour / 10 year mark, the value drops significantly, so it is better to trade it in before this.

cushion-forklift.png

Try to trade in your forklift before it is 10 years old to get the best price

Factors that Affect the Price of Your Forklift Trade In

There are many factors that will affect how much you get for your trade in. These include:

Capacity:

Forklifts with larger capacities sell for more than those with smaller ones.

Type of Fuel:

Electric and diesel models usually sell for more than Propane (LPG) models

Type of Tires:

Speciality tires that are in good condition such as non-marking, foam-filled or razor sipping will increase your price. If your tires need to be replaced then that could lower your price.

Hydraulics:

If you have extra hydraulic functions that accommodate attachments, then your forklift will be worth more.

Mast Size:

You can get a higher price if your mast is taller or is specialized

Extra Features and Accessories:

Having extra features such as outdoor cabs, non-standard accessories, and other special attachments will increase your forklift's value.

Supply and demand:

If there are more buyers than forklifts available for your particular model then you can get a higher price, but the opposite is also true. If there are lots of lifts available and fewer buyers interested then you may get less.

Counterbalance Forklift - Best Models

You can choose from many different models of Counterbalance forklift including electric, lithium-ion, propane, diesel, pneumatic, and cushion tires depending on your needs.

Today we'll take a closer look at the counterbalance forklift.

We have over 40 years in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

We'll let you know what a counterbalance forklift is and which are the best models for various applications to help you choose the right one for your needs. So, let's get going.

ic-pneumatic.jpg
4-wheel-pneumatic 12000-22000.jpg

Learn about the different types of counterbalance forklift

What Is a Counterbalance Forklift?

A counterbalance forklift gets its name from its design. It is heavily weighted in the rear so that when it lifts an incredibly heavy load, the weight in the back can "counter" the front weight so that the forklift doesn't tip over. The two weights balance each other out and give the forklift stability.

Counterbalance Forklift Models

There are many different types of counterbalance forklift models to choose from. Each one has certain advantages which makes it suitable for specific applications. The various models can be categorized by fuel source, types of wheels, and lifting capacities.

Counterbalance Forklift: Electric, Propane, or Diesel?

You can choose the type of fuel that your counterbalance forklift uses. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

Electric Counterbalance forklift

counterbalance forklift.png

An electric counterbalance forklift is great for indoor applications

Advantages:

An electric counterbalance forklift is your best choice for indoor applications. This is because electric forklifts do not cause harmful emissions like propane and diesel models.

They are also the best choice for working inside enclosed spaces such as unloading transports or shipping containers. Electric forklifts are also much more environmentally friendly than forklifts with internal combustion engines.

Electric forklifts are also the quietest type of counterbalance forklift and they cost less to maintain.

Certain models of lithium-ion-powered electric forklifts charge while you are operating them and only take about 2 hours to fully charge. Given this, they can be used for double and triple shifts without the need to purchase a second battery as you do with a lead-acid battery.

Lithium-ion batteries also don't need to be watered and carefully maintained like a lead-acid battery does, making them virtually maintenance-free.

wayco forklifts.jpg

Lithium-ion forklifts are virtually maintenance free

Disadvantages:

Lead-acid forklift batteries are large and cumbersome and they need to be carefully maintained. They also take about 8 to 10 hours to charge and another 8 hours for them to cool down before you can use them again. So you have to have more than one forklift battery to rotate if you want to do double shifts with your equipment which can be quite expensive.

Lithium-ion-powered counterbalance forklifts are more expensive to purchase upfront than propane forklifts, however, their total cost of ownership is much lower.

Electric forklifts don't perform as well in cold or wet locations.

Best for: Indoor applications and enclosed spaces

Propane Counterbalance forklift

Hangcha Propane Pneumatic Forklift.png

Propane can be used indoors and outdoors

Advantages:

Propane-powered forklifts produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions and have a lower carbon content than diesel-powered models.

Because of their lower emissions, you can use them in both indoor and outdoor applications, however, you would still want to have proper ventilation if you are using them inside of a warehouse. They are also more eco-friendly than a diesel forklift.

Propane-powered forklifts are usually less expensive to purchase upfront than an electric forklift and it is faster and easier to change a propane tank than it is to change and charge a lead-acid battery.

Disadvantages:

Propane forklifts cost more to run than electric ones and they don't have as good of rear visibility due to the position of their propane tank. In addition, really cold temperatures may cause them to be less reliable.

Best for: Indoor and outdoor applications

Diesel Counterbalance forklift

Rough terrain forklift.png

A diesel counterbalance forklift will usually last longer than a propane or electric model

Advantages:

Diesel is much cheaper to purchase than propane. Diesel engines are generally more powerful than both electric and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) engines. Diesel forklifts also have a lower total cost of ownership compared to propane forklifts. Diesel engines generally last longer as well.

Disadvantages:

Because of their high dangerous emissions, diesel forklifts are not suitable for indoor applications. Diesel forklifts also are the most expensive to purchase.

Best for: Outdoor applications

Counterbalance Forklift: Cushion or Pneumatic?

Counterbalance forklifts also come with a choice of tires. You can purchase an electric, propane or diesel forklift with your choice of tires. Here are the different tires available.

Cushion Tires

cushion-forklift.png

Cushion tires work best for indoor applications

Advantages:

Cushion forklift tires are made from solid rubber and are attached directly on the wheel of your forklift. They are also smooth and do not have the deep treads found on pneumatic tires.

Because cushion forklift tires sit lower to the ground, they will give you a smaller turning radius. This means that they have exceptional maneuverability.

Disadvantages:

Cushion tires have a difficult time traveling over the uneven surfaces found outside, such as dirt and gravel. Because cushion tires have a lower clearance than pneumatic, they are unable to maneuver over rough surfaces.

Best for: Cushion forklift tires are best for indoor applications. This type of tire is designed to work best on even surfaces such as warehouse flooring.

Pneumatic Tires

rough-terrain-forklifts-10000.png

Pneumatic tires are best for rough terrain

Advantages:

An air-filled pneumatic tire has an airtight inner core filled with pressurized air and covered by a tread that is usually reinforced with steel belting or other materials. The inside pressure of the tire is greater than the outside air pressure, which means that the tire will stay inflated even with the heavy weight of the vehicle pressing down on it.

Pneumatic tires are made out of very durable rubber and are constructed with a deep tread that makes them more durable than cushion tires. The deeper treads on a pneumatic tire are perfect for gripping uneven surfaces outside.

Air-filled pneumatic tires are filled with air, which cushions your ride and will give you a smoother overall operating experience. The air helps to absorb the bumps when going over potholes and other obstructions, making your operator’s ride much more comfortable. This absorbing effect will also help to lengthen the lifespan of your forklift as it will protect your trucks from the hard, constant jarring of the terrain.

Solid pneumatic tires are made of rubber or sometimes filled with foam instead of air. This makes them more puncture-proof than air-filled tires, but they don't give you as smooth of a ride.

rough-terrain-forklifts-5000-7000.png

Solid pneumatic tires resist punctures

Disadvantages:

Pneumatic tires can get punctured and will need to be repaired or replaced. They are also more expensive to buy than cushion tires and they are not suitable for warehouse floors. Because of their size, pneumatic forklifts usually have a larger turning radius, making them less maneuverable than a smaller cushion forklift.

Best for: If your forklifts are to be working on uneven or rugged terrain, such as gravel, pneumatic tires are your best choice.

You can also use pneumatic tires indoor for extra comfort for your operators, however, if you are working in tighter spaces and require greater maneuverability, you may want to choose a cushion tire.

Pallet Jack: Everything You Need to Know and More!

A pallet jack is a very basic type of forklift used to move pallets in warehouses, storerooms, and retail outlets. They can be either manual or electric. Learn what to look for when you are purchasing a pallet jack.

Today we are going to take a look at the pallet jack.

We have over 40 years in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

This post will explain what it is, the different types available and how it can help you improve efficiency in your business. So, let's get started.

light duty lithium battery.jpg
walkie pallet truck.jpg

A pallet jack is a very basic type of forklift

What Is a Pallet Jack?

A pallet jack is your most basic type of forklift. It is essentially a trolley with wheels designed to lift and transport heavy pallets. It has tapered forks that fit into the slots of a pallet.

The forks are then moved manually with a pump handle or electrically to raise and lower your load. The pallet jack is steered by a lever that acts like a "tiller", as well as a pump handle that is used to raise the jack.

A pallet jack can be either pushed or pulled, however, it is generally safer to push it.

Pallet jacks are also commonly referred to as pallet trucks, pallet pumps, power jacks, walkies, pump trucks, scooters, dogs, and jiggers.

Check out this Hancha pallet jack in action

Different Types of Pallet Jacks

Manual Pallet Jacks: Manual pallet jacks are hand-powered and are used to transport light to medium-sized loads over a relatively short distance.

Electric Pallet Jacks: Electric pallet jacks have an electric motor that make lifting and moving much easier. They can be used to move heavier loads and stacked pallets.

Lithium-Ion Pallet Jacks: A lithium-ion pallet jack is an electric pallet jack that is powered by a lithium-ion battery instead of a lead-acid battery. Lithium-ion batteries charge faster and their charge lasts longer. They also have a longer lifespan than a traditional battery.

A Lithium-ion powered pallet jack is easy to charge and maintain

Light Duty Pallet Jack: This type of pallet jack is great if you are moving light loads over short distances. You can also get ones with a compact body that make them even easier to maneuver in tight spaces.

Heavy Duty Pallet Jack: If you need to move heavy loads over greater distances, then you should opt for a heavy duty pallet jack.

Rough Terrain Pallet Jack: A rough terrain pallet jack is designed to be used on uneven ground. They will have a heavy-duty frame and pneumatic tires that can accommodate for rough surfaces.

Rider Pallet Jack: Some models of pallet jacks include a platform that you can ride on. These types of pallet jacks usually more durable and have higher lifting capacities.

How to Choose the Best Pallet Jack for Your Needs

There are a number of different factors that you should consider when choosing a pallet jack, these include:

1. Capacity:

One of the most important features to look at is the capacity. Capacity means how much weight your pallet jack can lift. Pallet jack capacities can range anywhere from 3,000 to 8,000 lbs.

Before you buy a pallet jack, make sure that you calculate the weight of goods that you are going to need it to lift and transport. You don't want to purchase a pallet jack that can't handle the loads that you require as it could cause a serious safety hazard for your operators and increase the risk of it breaking down.

2. Lift Height:

You will also want to check the lift height of the pallet jack. Lift heights can range anywhere from 3 inches to 8 feet off the ground.

If you need to lift your pallets as well as move them, then you should choose one that can accommodate the lift heights that you require.

You should also check the rated capacities of the pallet truck for the various lift heights to make sure that they are sufficient as well. If your pallet jack's load exceeds its capacity for the height you need, then it may tip over causing damage to your goods and possible injury to your operator and surrounding people.

industrial-walkie-stacker.jpg

If you need to lift pallets, choose one that can accommodate the lift heights that you need

3. Fork Length:

Most pallets in North America are 40" x 48", so most pallet trucks come with 48" forks. However, there are pallets of different sizes. If the pallets that you will be using are smaller or larger than the average 48", then you should purchase a pallet truck with the appropriate size of forks.

If your forks are too long, then you will find it really difficult to maneuver your loads where they need to go. If your forks are too short, then they may not be able to support your load, making them unstable and unsafe to move.

4. Weight:

You should also take into consideration the overall weight of the pallet jack, especially if you are going to be using it over surfaces that have weight restrictions such as container floors or lift gates. You need to add the base weight to the weight of the loads you will be carrying to determine if it can be used on these specific surfaces.

On the other hand, a heavier unit can also be a good indicator of the quality of the equipment. Heavier equipment tends to last longer and is usually more durable.

04-2.jpg
light duty gel battery.jpg

Heavier pallet jacks are usually more durable

Where Can You Use a Pallet Jack?

Pallet jacks are great to use in many different applications such as:

  • Warehouses

  • Retail locations

  • Stockrooms

  • Any location where pallets are used

Find the perfect Hangcha forklift for your needs

Hangcha Forklift Categories

Hangcha has 8 different forklift categories designed to suit different operations. All forklifts are not the same and not every forklift will work for every application. The main things that you need to consider when choosing the best forklift include:

The Load Capacity: The load capacity is the recommended maximum weight that your forklift is designed to carry. You should know the weight of the loads that you want your forklift to be moving and lifting when you are purchasing your forklift. Lifting above the recommended capacity of your forklift is dangerous and will damage your machine.

Where Your Forklift Will Be Used: Where you plan to use your forklift (indoors, outdoors, or both) will affect the type that you choose.

The Dimensions of Your Facility: The dimensions of your facility including the height, width, and turning radius of your aisles will play a large role in your selection of the best forklift for your needs.

The Type of Power You Want: You can choose from electric, electric with lithium-ion batteries, or propane-powered Hangcha Forklifts depending on your situation.

Taking all of the above into consideration before you buy will help to ensure that you make the right choice.

proindex04-1.jpg

Load capacity, the power you want, the size of your facility, and where you want to use your Hangcha forklift will determine the type you choose

Electric Hangcha Forklift

Great for Indoor Applications: Electric forklifts are your perfect choice for indoor applications as they don't give off harmful emissions, this makes them safe for indoor use.

Safe for Working Around Food: In addition, if your warehouse stores food products, then electric forklifts are your only option as they won't give off the harmful emissions that are dangerous for food.

3,000 - 10,000lb Capacities: Hangcha electric forklifts come in a range of lifting capacities from lighter-duty models that lift 4,000lbs to larger pneumatic ones that can lift up to 10,000lbs.

Cushion or Pneumatic Tires: You will want to choose an electric forklift with cushion tires if you want to use your forklift indoors as they work well on smooth surfaces and one with pneumatic tires for outdoor applications as they are designed for rough, uneven surfaces.

electric forklifts.jpg

Electric forklifts are perfect for indoor applications

Narrow Aisle Hangcha Forklift

Great for Warehouses: Hangcha's selection of narrow aisle forklifts are the perfect choice for warehouse applications.

Perfect for Small Spaces: It's no good getting a forklift that is too big to fit comfortably into your facility. If your aisles are narrow, then you need to purchase a narrow-aisle model.

In addition to how wide your aisles are, you need to also look at how much space you have at the ends to make sure that the forklift you choose will navigate easily around those corners.

Great for High Racks: Roof and rack heights vary between facilities. You want to purchase a forklift that is going to be able to reach high enough to accommodate your highest racking. Hancha has a great selection of reach trucks and order pickers that can help you get to those hard-to-reach areas.

Hangcha has the best narrow aisle forklifts for those tight spaces

Hangcha Electric Pallet Jack & Stacker

Great for Smaller Loads: Hangcha pallet jacks and stackers are a perfect choice if you need to move smaller loads across shorter distances. They are less expensive and easier to operate than a full-size forklift. If you don't need to reach the lifting capacity of a forklift, then this is a great alternative.

Many Applications: Pallet jacks work well in warehouses, construction sites, and retail operations where you need to move pallets from one location to the next.

IC Cushion Hangcha Forklift

More Power: If you need more power in your forklift, then an internal combustion engine (IC) can provide that for you.

Good for Indoor Use: An IC cushion forklift can be used indoors if you are not storing food products. Hangcha offers a great selection of Propane powered IC cushion forklifts. However, you do need to follow safety procedures to make sure that there is no risk of your workers being exposed to high concentrations of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. When using propane forklifts indoors:

  • Make sure that your facility has proper ventilation

  • Make sure that you keep your propane forklift engines well maintained

  • Make sure that you change the propane tanks outside or in a well-ventilated area away from anything that could ignite the gas

  • Only allow trained individuals to handle, refill, and store the liquid propane fuel

Cleaner Fuel: Propane is a cleaner-burning and usually less expensive fuel than gas or diesel.

IC Pneumatic Hangcha Forklift

Great for Outdoor Applications: The larger pneumatic tires of the Hangcha IC pneumatic forklift will give you the extra traction required for moving over rugged surfaces found outdoors and particularly on construction sites.

Designed for Heavier Loads: Hangcha's IC Pneumatic forklift will give you the extra power and lifting capacities that you need for tackling heavier loads.

Cleaner Fuel: Propane is a cleaner-burning and usually less expensive fuel than gas or diesel.

Rough Terrain Hangcha Forklift

Perfect for Rough Terrains: If you need your forklift to operate on rough terrains, then choose a rough terrain Hangcha forklift. These rugged machines are perfect for the uneven ground found at construction sites, railway yards, and shipyards.

How to Find The Best Forklift for Your Operation

If you want to buy the best forklift for your needs, take into consideration the type of power it uses, the weight of the loads you have, whether you are using it inside or outside & the dimensions of your facility.

Today we are going to explain how you can find the best forklift for your operation.

We have over 40 years in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise and experience with you.

This post will let you know what you should be looking for when trying to purchase the best forklift for your particular needs. So, let's get started.

banner.png

Different forklifts are designed for different applications

How to Find the Best Forklift for Your Operation

All forklifts are not the same and not every forklift will work for every application. There are a wide variety of different forklifts designed to suit different operations. So, how can you know which one is the best forklift for your needs?

The main things that you need to consider when choosing the best forklift include:

  • The type of power it uses

  • The load capacity

  • Where your forklift will be used

  • The dimensions of your facility

Taking all of the above into consideration before you buy will help to ensure that you make the right choice.

forklift-can't-stop-and-has-no-brakes.png

You need to consider a number of different factors when choosing the best forklift

The Type of Power You Need

There are different types of power used to run forklifts: electric, propane, gasoline, and diesel.

Electric Forklifts: Electric forklifts are generally better suited for lifting lighter loads. Heavier loads will run down your battery very quickly so you will need to charge them more often. As well, most electric forklifts don't have enough power to lift heavier loads.

Internal Combustion (IC) Forklifts: Internal combustion engines run on fuels including propane, gasoline, and diesel. An IC engine tends to be much more powerful than an electric one. Therefore, IC forklifts are a much better choice for lifting heavier loads.

heavy-forklift.jpg

Internal combustion forklifts are better for lifting heavy loads

The Load Capacity

The load capacity is the recommended maximum weight that your forklift is designed to carry. You should know the weight of the loads that you want your forklift to be moving and lifting when you are purchasing your forklift.

You need to make sure that you are buying a forklift that can handle the weights that you need it to. Lifting above the recommended capacity of your forklift is dangerous and will damage your machine.

Load capacities range anywhere from 3,000 lbs up to 70,000+ lbs. The recommended maximum load capacity will be written on the data plate of each forklift.

WAYCO-2019-7.jpg

Look on the data plate to find the forklift’s maximum load lifting capacity

Where Your Forklift Will Be Used

Where you plan to use your forklift (indoors, outdoors, or both) will affect the type of forklift that you choose.

Indoor Use:

Cushion Forklifts: The best tire for indoor use is a cushion tire. Cushion tires perform well on smooth surfaces such as warehouse flooring, but they do not do well on rough outdoor surfaces.

Electric Forklifts: If you are only using your forklift indoors, then an electric model is your best option. Electric forklifts don't give off harmful emissions so they are safe for indoor use. In addition, if your warehouse stores food products, then electric forklifts are your only option.

forklift.jpg

Electric forklifts are your best choice for operating indoors

Propane Forklifts: If you aren't storing food products, then you can also choose a propane-fueled forklift indoors, because they are a cleaner burning fuel than gas or diesel.

For more information on safe propane forklift practices, click here. Regular maintenance, tuning of propane-powered engines, and inspection of vehicle exhaust systems for leaks keep the exposure to a minimum.

The exposure limit values for propane fuel may vary from place to place, so contact your jurisdiction for occupational health and safety to find out their recommendations.

Forklift_dealers[1].jpg

Propane forklifts can be used both indoors and outdoors

Outdoor Use:

IC Gas or Diesel Forklifts: Forklifts that use gasoline or diesel should only be used outside. These types of forklifts give off harmful emissions so you should stay away from these if you need to operate your forklift indoors.

Pneumatic Forklifts: Also when choosing a forklift for outdoor use, you should purchase one with pneumatic tires. This type of tire is designed for the rugged and uneven surfaces that you find outside.

image-asset.png

Diesel and gas powered forklifts should be operated outdoors

Both Indoor and Outdoor Use:

Propane Forklifts: If you need your forklift to operate both indoors and outdoors, then a propane forklift is your best choice. However, you need to follow the safety practices outlined in the above "indoor" section when operating your propane forklift indoors.

The Dimensions of Your Facility

The dimensions of your facility should play a large role in your selection of the best forklift for your needs. The following dimensions should be taken into consideration when you make your choice:

The height of your facility: Roof and rack heights vary between facilities. You want to purchase a forklift that is going to be able to reach high enough to accommodate your highest racking.

On the other hand, you don't want to have to pay for a forklift that can reach higher than what you actually need either.

The width of your aisles: It's no good getting a forklift that is too big to fit comfortably into your facility. If you have wide aisles, then you can choose a forklift that is wider. If your aisles are narrow, then you need to purchase a narrow-aisle model.

forklift rental waterloo.png

If your space is limited, you may need to choose a narrow-aisle forklift

The turning radius of your aisles: In addition to how wide your aisles are, you need to also look at how much space you have at the ends and make sure that the forklift you choose is able to easily navigate around those corners.

How Durable the Forklift Is

A forklift is a sizeable investment. However, you shouldn't just consider the purchase price when choosing a forklift.

Maintenance and repair costs add up quickly so it is important to look at the total cost of ownership rather than just purchasing the cheapest forklift you can find.

A lower quality forklift will probably require more repairs and won't last as long as a higher quality one. Take a look at the track record of the manufacturer that you are considering and choose one that is known for its reliable and durable machines.

A good warranty is a good indicator of the quality of the forklift. If a manufacturer is willing to offer a great warranty, they know that their product is great and will be reliable.

Komatsu, for example makes one of the most durable forklifts in the industry and they back it up with the longest warranty as well.

Best Forklift for Large Warehouses

If you have a larger warehouse with elevated storage areas, you will usually require a forklift that is designed to lift to higher heights.

If you need your forklift to operate mostly inside your warehouse, then choosing one with cushion tires designed to easily move over smooth, even surfaces is also a good idea.

1. STÄRKE Cushion Forklift XVI Series

Starke_Pro_FG25P_XVI_Series_Front_Left_HiRes.png

This forklift has the power to lift your heavy products high and the tires to work well on a smooth surface. It features:

  • Capacity 3,000 lbs

  • Excellent ramp and grade performance

  • Low center of gravity for stability

Best Forklift for Retail Stores and Smaller Warehouses

Walkies and stackers are the best forklift type for a retail or smaller warehouse setting. You can easily use walkies and stackers to move your products in your retail store out of trailers to low-level racking or out onto your retail selling floor.

These types of forklifts work well in a retail setting because they are smaller and can maneuver around the tighter spaces in a store.

They also work well because you don't need to move your product over long distances nor do you need to lift it very high.

The handles help you control the speed, steering, and lifting and because you are walking, they aren't going fast enough to be a safety issue for customers or other staff.

1. Stärke LiftMaxx 4500 lb PT45MXA Electric Walkie Pallet Truck

Starke_LiftMaxx_PT30MXA-800x677-1-600x384+(1).png

This walkie pallet is very easy to move around smaller spaces and has:

  • Capacity 4,500 lbs

  • Maintenance Free Batteries

2. Starke LiftMaxx EMSA3300X Semi-Electric Straddle Stacker

Starke_LiftMaxx_EMSA3300X-550-x-657-1-500x384.png

A stacker removes the need to hand bomb products from trailers at street level. This one also includes:

  • Fully adjustable forks and straddle legs

  • Semi-electric / manual push pull functions

  • Powered lift

3. Pre-owned Crown PC3520-60 Walkie Pallet

75214-Yale-Electric-Pallet-MPW060-792x650-600x384.png

If you are on a budget, why not consider purchasing a good used forklift like this one, which has:

  • 6,000 lb. capacity

  • Electric 24V

  • 48″ forks

Tips for First Time Buyers so You Get the Best Forklift

1. Purchase from a well-established supplier: Go to a local forklift supplier who has been in the industry and has a solid, established reputation in the industry. They will know what they are talking about and will be able to best advise you on your purchase.

2. Choose a company that offers great warranties: Make sure you select a forklift that comes with a great warranty. A manufacturer will back up their quality product with a warranty because they know that it is good.

3. Check out online reviews: Go online and check out the reviews of the forklift company that you are considering using and see what their previous customers have to say about them: whether they are reliable, whether their pricing is fair, and if they stand by their products.

3. You Get Added Value to Help You Choose: If you are trying to decide between two identical forklifts that are priced the same, the one that offers the better warranty will give you better value.

Heavy Forklift Trucks: What You Need To Know

Learn about heavy forklift trucks and if that type of forklift is right for your application. They are perfect for construction sites, railway and ship yards, farms and more!

Today we are going to explain what a heavy forklift is.

We have over 40 years experience in the material handling industry and we would love to share our expertise with you.

In this post, we will describe what a heavy forklift is, how they are used, and what to look for when purchasing one. So, let's get going.

What Is a Heavy Forklift?

A heavy forklift can also be called an industrial forklift or a large capacity forklift. This type of lift truck is used to lift, move, and place very heavy loads. They are usually much larger than electric warehouse forklifts.

komatsu-heavy-forklift.png

Heavy forklifts are also called industrial or large capacity forklifts - Source: Komatsu

They can be 10 ft or more in length and almost always have an internal combustion engine to give them more power. They are often used for industrial and construction applications.

A heavy forklift functions similarly to a warehouse forklift. However, it can lift its loads much higher off the ground than a regular warehouse forklift, and it is capable of lifting much heavier loads.

Lifting capacity

Lifting capacity refers to the amount of weight that a forklift can safely carry. If a forklift carries more than its maximum lifting capacity then it can become unstable.

heavy-forklift.jpg

If you need to move heavy loads, choose an industrial forklift

Industrial forklifts are able to handle incredible weights from 22,000 lbs to 30,000 lbs and higher depending on the model. This makes them great for heavy duty lifting jobs.

Types of Industries that Use Heavy Forklifts

You don't need a heavy forklift for your average warehouse application. They are, however, perfect for industries that have very heavy products and rough terrain.

Warehouses: Even though most warehouses do not require the use of an industrial heavy forklift, if your facility handles extremely heavy products, then an industrial forklift may be a good choice for you.

Construction Sites: You will often see a heavy forklift on a construction site. That's because they are capable of lifting and moving the heavy building materials required, such as concrete and metals. It is also well suited to the rough terrain found on building sites.

Heavy forklifts are perfect for construction site lifting

Railways: Another industry that may use a heavy forklift is the railway. Railways often transport heavy cargo as well as shipping containers, so an industrial forklift is needed to be able to move, lift, load, and unload this type of heavy cargo.

Ports: Like railways, shipping ports and dry docks use heavy forklifts to load and unload their cargo and shipping containers as well.

Farms: Often, an industrial forklift is used on a farm to lift bales of hay. Hay may not be as heavy as the other materials we've mentioned. However, an industrial forklift is needed to lift and place them higher than a regular forklift would be able to.

What to Look for When Purchasing a Heavy Forklift

Maximum Load Capacity:

There are a wide range of load capacities when it comes to forklifts. You should choose a forklift that is able to handle the weights that you are going to be lifting.

It is a good idea to get a forklift that is slightly more powerful than you actually need. This is because if your lift truck is constantly lifting at its maximum weight capacity, it will use a lot of energy and it will be harder on the machine.

For example, if most of the loads that you require moving are around 8,000 lbs, then you should choose a forklift with a maximum capacity of more than 8,000 lbs.

Maximum Lift Height:

forklift-attachments.png

Forklift attachments will make your machine more versatile

Different forklift models have different load lifting heights. Figure out how high you need your loads lifted before choosing your forklift. Measure your worksite and get a forklift that can reach that high.

Forklift Attachments:

You can purchase forklift attachments for your heavy forklift that will increase its capabilities and flexibility.

For example, you can add a forklift boom, which will allow your forklift to lift from above instead of from below. Clamps let you move oddly shaped items safely, and fork extensions allow you to lift larger loads.

Working Environment:

If you need your heavy forklift to operate outdoors on rough or uneven ground, then choose a forklift that can handle these types of surfaces. A rough terrain forklift will be equipped with pneumatic tires that are better than cushion tires for these types of surfaces.

If you are using it on a construction site with sharp debris that could damage your tires, you might also want to get solid as opposed to air filled tires so that they are more puncture-resistant.

Used forklift equipment can usually be delivered immediately, but if you order new equipment, you often have to wait 4-12 weeks before you get it, depending on the model and the manufacturer. So if you need your equipment immediately, used is the way to go.

“I have used Wayco twice, and both times I experienced excellent customer service. They had the right forklift for my needs at a reasonable price. I will be using their services in the future and recommend you do as well.”
