Hangcha Counterbalance Forklift Guide
1. What Is a Counterbalance Forklift?
A counterbalance forklift is a type of forklift truck specifically designed to handle heavy loads in industrial and warehouse settings. It is one of the most common types of forklifts used in various industries due to its versatility and ability to maneuver in tight spaces.
The term "counterbalance" refers to the weight at the rear of the forklift, which balances the load being lifted at the front. This design allows your forklift to lift heavy objects without tipping over.
Here are the key features and components of a counterbalance forklift:
Counterbalance Design
Counterbalance forklifts have a heavy counterweight at the back of the vehicle, balancing the load weight at the front. This design allows the forklift to lift loads vertically without the need for extended support legs or outriggers.
Types of Counterbalance Forklifts
There are 2 main types of Hangcha counterbalance forklifts: electric and internal combustion.
Electric Counterbalance Forklifts:
An electric Hangcha counterbalanced forklift can be safely used indoors.
Electric forklifts are powered by electric batteries and emit zero emissions, making them suitable for indoor use. They are quieter than IC forklifts and produce no exhaust fumes, making them environmentally friendly.
Hangcha has a complete line of Lithium-ion electric forklifts that offer even more great benefits over traditional lead-acid batteries. These include:
Opportunity charging during breaks and lunch hours
Faster charging speeds
No watering of batteries needed
No equalization charging needed
Consistent power throughout the charge
Hangcha counterbalance forklift Lithium-ion technology is so advanced that their electric forklifts can compete with similar internal combustion engine forklifts for power and performance.
Internal Combustion (IC) Counterbalance Forklifts:
Internal combustion forklifts are powered by gasoline, diesel, or propane engines. They are suitable for outdoor use and can handle heavy loads efficiently.
This type of forklift is not usually suitable for indoor use as it can give off harmful fumes. However, propane forklifts can be used inside and outside if there is proper ventilation in your facility.
Three-Wheel and Four-Wheel Counterbalance Forklifts
You can get either three or four-wheel models of Hangcha Counterbalance forklifts.
Three-Wheel Counterbalance Forklifts:
3-wheel forklifts are perfect for narrow aisles and tight spaces.
Three-wheel forklifts have a single drive wheel at the back and two front wheels for stability. They are highly maneuverable and ideal for tight spaces.
Four-Wheel Counterbalance Forklifts:
Four-wheel forklifts have two drive wheels at the front and two additional wheels at the back for stability. They offer better stability when lifting heavy loads and are suitable for a wide range of applications.
Counterbalance Forklift Parts
Here are some of the main parts of a forklift along with a brief explanation about what each does.
Mast
The mast is the vertical assembly on the front of the forklift that raises and lowers the load. It consists of interlocking rails and rollers that allow the forklift to lift loads to various heights.
Forks
The forks are the horizontal arms that slide under the load. They can be raised and lowered for loading, unloading, and transporting goods.
Hydraulic System
Counterbalance forklifts use a hydraulic system to control the movement of the mast and forks. The hydraulic system allows for smooth and precise lifting and lowering of loads.

You need specific training for the type of forklift you will be operating.
Operating a Hangcha counterbalance forklift, like any other type of forklift, requires strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of operators and those working in the vicinity. Here are the top five safety tips for operating a Hangcha counterbalance forklift:
Proper Training and Certification
Operators should undergo comprehensive training programs and obtain certification specific to the type of forklift they will be operating.
Your training should cover both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including safe operating practices, load handling, and emergency procedures.
Pre-Operation Inspection
You need to conduct a thorough pre-operation inspection of your forklift before each use. Check for any signs of damage, leaks, or worn-out components.
Ensure that all safety features are functioning properly including:
Lights
Horns
Brakes
Steering
If any issues are identified, you should report them immediately and do not operate the forklift until it has been properly inspected and repaired by qualified personnel.
Stable Loads and Weight Capacity
Never lift a load above your forklift’s weight capacity.
Always adhere to the forklift's load capacity limits specified by the manufacturer. Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity or try to lift unbalanced or uneven loads, as this can cause the forklift to tip over.
Ensure that the load is stable, centred on the forks, and secure before lifting or moving.
Safe Driving and Maneuvering
Follow safe driving practices, including observing speed limits, especially in congested or tight spaces. Keep a safe distance from pedestrians, other forklifts, and obstacles.
Use horns and warning signals when approaching blind corners or intersections. When turning, use the appropriate turning radius to avoid tipping over. Always drive in reverse when the load obstructs your view.
Pedestrian Awareness
Be vigilant about the presence of pedestrians and other workers in the area. Use designated walkways and avoid driving the forklift in areas where pedestrians are present, if possible.
Establish clear communication protocols, such as hand signals or designated zones, to alert pedestrians and other workers when the forklift is in motion. Encourage eye contact and ensure that pedestrians are aware of the forklift's presence before proceeding.
Additionally, your operators should wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as the following to enhance their safety while operating the forklift:
Hard hat
High-visibility vest
Steel-toed boots
Gloves
By following these safety tips and practicing vigilance, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and create a safer working environment when operating your forklift.

1. LPG Forklift Engines
The Hangcha forklift engine meets North American emission standards
Hangcha's XF Series pneumatic tire forklifts are equipped with GCT K21/25 LPG (liquefied petroleum gas also known as propane) engines.
Both the GCT K21 and GCT K25 engines are made by Nissan and are two of the most popular forklift engines around. These engines are only used in forklifts.
GCT K21:
The K21 is a 2.0-litre liquid-propane gas or gasoline-powered motor with 4 cylinders. It is used in forklifts that have a capacity of 2,500 lbs or lower.
GCT K25:
The K25 is used in heavier-duty models and has a 2.5-litre engine. It is a high-power and high-torque engine that will give you excellent fuel economy.
Both the GCT K21 and K25 engines comply with North American EPA emissions standards, Tier 2.
Although they meet these environmentally-friendly standards, that doesn't mean that they are short on power. These heavy-duty forklifts have all the power and torque you need to get the job done.
In addition, this type of Hangcha forklift engine is also electronically controlled to increase your fuel economy and give you a lift truck that is incredibly reliable.
This type of Hangcha forklift engine is also electronically controlled. This means that any issues with your engine will be displayed on the LCD instrument panel so you will know the status of your engine at all times.
This will let you get any maintenance done as soon as possible so that small issues won't develop into larger, more costly repairs.
2. Diesel Engines
The diesel Hangcha forklift engine is powerful and reliable.
Here are two of the diesel forklift engines that Hangcha uses.
Kubota V2607:
Hangcha's XF Series Pneumatic Tire diesel forklifts feature the Kubota V2607 diesel engine. This incredibly powerful Kubota diesel engine is Tier 4F compliant.
Tier 4 refers to engines that are designed to significantly decrease emissions in off-highway equipment such as forklifts and bring them up to the standards of highway trucks and buses.
The engine uses common rail fuel systems, diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), and diesel particulate filters (DPF) to meet Tier 4F compliance. This engine helps you get the maximum efficiency and reliability possible in a diesel forklift.
DEUTZ:
The Hangcha 4-wheel drive rough terrain forklift is equipped with a DEUTZ engine. This 3.6-litre engine is Tier4F-compliant and produces its peak power (74.3hp) and torque (390Nm) at engine speeds as low as 1300rpm giving you great responsiveness.
This powerful Hangcha forklift engine is not only reliable, but it is also easy to maintain.
3. Lithium-ion Powered Forklifts
You can get a lithium-ion Hangcha forklift engine in a wide variety of models.
The Lithium-ion Hangcha forklift engine is the most innovative and impressive of all. Hangcha offers a complete lineup of Lithium-ion powered forklifts. Here are some of the amazing benefits of investing in a lithium-ion Hangcha forklift engine.
Lower Total Cost of Ownership:
Lithium-powered forklifts will give you a lower total cost of ownership over Internal Combustion or lead-acid electric forklifts because of the following:
They last longer.
They charge faster.
They use less energy.
Even though Internal Combustion or lead acid battery forklifts are usually cheaper to purchase than lithium-ion, they will cost you more to maintain and run over the lifespan of your forklift.
Depending on your usage you may save more than $20,000 by purchasing a Hangcha Lithium-Ion forklift.
Virtually Maintenance Free:
Lithium-ion forklifts are virtually maintenance-free. Unlike lead-acid batteries, you never need to do the following:
water them,
check their fluid levels
clean them
Having fewer or no maintenance tasks will save you both time and money.
Charge Much Faster:
Hangcha's lithium-ion forklifts can be fully charged in as little as 2 hours, and they don't need to cool down after charging like lead-acid batteries do.
It can take 8 to 10 hours to charge a lead-acid battery vs under 2 hours for a Lithium Ion Battery. This means no battery changes are needed and your operation gets the work done!
Lithium-ion batteries can be charged during breaks and lunch hours.
You can also take advantage of opportunity charging so that your forklift can be operated for consecutive shifts.
Easier to Charge:
Hangcha's lithium-ion batteries are much lighter and easier to remove and often come with onboard charging. Some Hangcha Lithium forklifts don't require a special charging station, so they save you time and space.
Hangcha's Lithium batteries Last Longer:
Lithium-ion forklift batteries manufactured by Hangcha can last up to 20,000 hours or 10 years, so if you use your forklift 8 hours a day, it will last about 2,500 days! And they come with a 3, 5, or 10-year Battery warranty depending on the model.
Lead-acid batteries, on the other hand, typically last between 1,000 to 1,500 cycles. That means that if you charge your forklift once a day, then your battery will last 1,000 to 1,500 days.
No Equalization Charging:
Lithium-ion forklift batteries do not need equalization charging, unlike most lead-acid batteries. Equalization charging can take an additional 3 or more hours at a low stream of power plus your additional cooling time.
Save Energy:
Lithium-ion forklift batteries keep a constant voltage level during the entire discharge cycle. This means that you can save as much as 50% in energy costs compared to lead-acid batteries.
Lithium-ion forklifts can save you time and money.
This also means the forklift will operate faster and more efficiently for longer each and every day.
High Energy Density:
Hangcha's lithium-ion battery packs have double the energy density of a lead-acid battery of the same dimensions. In addition, the voltage supply is stable throughout the energy discharge giving you longer run times.
Can Operate in Hot and Cold Temperatures:
Because of Hangcha's electrical heating element, their lithium-ion forklifts can run in both hot and cold applications. When compared to a lead-acid powered forklift, lithium-ion batteries can heat up to 32 degrees F in one-third of the time it would take a lead-acid battery.
Environmentally Friendly:
Lithium-ion batteries do not release harmful emissions into the environment like IC forklifts do so you can safely use them indoors. They are more energy efficient when charging and discharging and they are completely recyclable.
A Lithium-ion Hangcha forklift engine is better for the environment than and IC engine.

Load capacity refers to the maximum load or weight that your forklift can safely carry. You need to purchase a forklift that can handle the weight of loads that you need it to.
Every forklift is designed with a specific lifting capacity and exceeding that capacity can have dangerous consequences. There are, however, a number of factors that can reduce your forklift's load capacity.
Higher Lift Heights: Your forklift's load capacity will decrease at higher lift heights. Since you need a multi-stage mast to reach higher lift heights and because of the construction of a multi-stage mast, your load capacities will go down.
Lifting loads that are too heavy at higher heights could damage your equipment, cause it to malfunction, and even result in a serious accident.
Adding Attachments: If you add an attachment to your forklift after you purchase it, that attachment will have its own rated maximum capacity.
Adding attachments can affect your load capacity
The maximum capacity that your forklift can carry is determined by the lowest maximum capacity of your components.
For example, if your attachment has a capacity of 5,000 lbs but your forklift has a capacity of 6,000 lbs, then you can only lift 5,000 lbs.
Longer Load Centre: If you are lifting a load that has a longer load centre, then your load capacity will also be decreased. You need to know what your load center dimensions are and the maximum rated capacity for them.
Make sure you reduce your load weights when your load centres are larger than usual.
2. Pneumatic and Cushion Tires
Another one of the Hangcha forklift specifications you might be wondering about is the types of tires listed. The two main types of tires are pneumatic and cushion.
Pneumatic Tires
Hangcha forklift specifications: Pneumatic tires work well on uneven, rough surfaces.
Pneumatic forklift tires are very similar to car tires. They have a very thick tread that will give you great traction over uneven or loose surfaces.
There are basically 2 types of pneumatic tires: air-filled pneumatic tires and solid pneumatic tires.
Air-filled Pneumatic Tires: An air-filled pneumatic tire has an airtight inner core filled with pressurized air and covered by a tread that is usually reinforced with steel belting or other materials. They give you a more comfortable ride, so they are a good choice if your operators are working long shifts.
Solid Pneumatic Tires: Solid pneumatic tires, on the other hand, are made of solid rubber or sometimes filled with foam instead of air. This makes them more puncture-proof and durable than air-filled tires, but they don't give you as smooth of a ride.
Solid pneumatic tires are a good choice if you are using your forklift on rough surfaces such as on a construction sites or in a lumber yard where your tires could get damaged easily.
Cushion Tires
Cushion tires are made of solid rubber.
Cushion tires are quite different than pneumatic tires and are better suited to different applications.
Solid rubber: Cushion tires have a smooth outer surface and are made of solid rubber that is formed around a metal band. They are your best option for use on smooth surfaces found in warehouses and retail settings. Their hard exterior makes them resistant to chipping.
Smaller & Easier to Maneuver: Cushion tires are smaller than pneumatic which makes them easier to maneuver. They can fit on a smaller forklift frame and have a much tighter turning radius, so you can use them in narrower aisles. In addition, they have lower ground clearance.
Less Expensive: Because cushion tires are smaller than pneumatic tires, they don't require as much material to make. That is why they are usually cheaper to purchase. They will also usually last longer than pneumatic tires, especially if you keep your floors clean and avoid using your forklift outside on rough terrain.
3. Types of Masts
The mast is the part of your forklift that is made up of your forks and an elevation mechanism that is operated by a hydraulic system. There are 4 different types of forklift masts to choose from: simplex, duplex, triplex, and quad.
Simplex or Single-Stage
The simplex or single-stage mast is a standard type of mast that uses a stationary outer rail and sliding inner rail with chains to lift the carriage and forks. The height that you can lift is limited by the maximum extension of the inner rails.
This type of forklift is typically used for lower lifting heights such as lifting cargo onto the back of a truck.
Duplex or Two-Stage
A duplex, also known as a two-stage mast, is designed with a hydraulic cylinder in the middle of the mast assembly. It helps to push your load up while the mast itself stays stationary. When the carriage gets to the top of its inner rails, there are two supporting side rails that help to complete the lifting.
A duplex mast is a great choice for applications such as double stacking your loads, freight cross-docking, and manufacturing component delivery.
Triplex or Three-Stage
A three-stage mast has 2 sliding rails.
A triplex or three-stage mast has two sliding rails and a single stationary rail. It is designed with a large hydraulic ram in the middle of the mast assembly that does most of the lifting.
It also has secondary hydraulic cylinders that lift the center sections and a chain system that pulls the inner section when the mast is fully extended.
You often see triplex masts on reach trucks. This design lets the forklift reach and extend to greater distances.
Quad or Four-Stage
A quad, also called a four-stage mast, has four sets of rails and chains to raise and lower its loads. They can reach much higher heights and require advanced training to operate them.
A quad mast works similarly to a triplex mast, but it has a powerful hydraulic secondary cylinder rail that gives it even more extension.
4. Opportunity Charging
Opportunity charging is great if you run continuous shifts.
Opportunity charging refers to charging your forklift battery for short periods of time throughout the day instead of charging it to its full capacity all at once. In essence, you are charging the battery whenever you get the "opportunity."
Times when you can use opportunity charging include:
During shift changes
During your operator's lunch or coffee breaks
During other pauses in the workday
There are many great benefits to opportunity charging. Opportunity charging lets you continuously use the same battery throughout multiple shifts.
If you have a multi-shift operation, then opportunity charging will allow you to keep running without having to stop to charge or swap your batteries. This means that you won't have to purchase extra batteries, or set aside extra downtime for charging, and you can use the same forklift for multiple shifts.
Lithium batteries do not need to be fully charged.
While you can do opportunity charging with some types of lead acid batteries, Lithium-ion batteries are better suited for this practice.
This is because, unlike lead-acid batteries which need regular full charges to prevent sulfation, lithium-ion batteries don't need to get a full charge and there is no risk of sulfation.
In fact, lithium-ion batteries actually do better and have a longer lifespan when they are not fully charged.
5. Soft Landing System
A soft landing system is one of the great Hangcha forklift specifications.
Hangcha's soft landing system will automatically reduce the lowering speed of the forks when the height from the ground to the forks is less than 100mm.
This is an effective and safe way to protect both your load and your forklift from hitting the ground too hard and causing damage.
