If you have forklifts in your facility, you know that the Ministry of Labour requires that all lift trucks have a lifting device inspection at least once per year.

What is an Annual Lifting Device Inspection?


An annual lifting device inspection or also known as an annual safety inspection is a detailed visual and operation inspection of the forklift by a competent person and must pass the inspection showing it its running properly and safely.

A lifting device is defined as a device that is used to raise or lower any material or object and includes its rails and other supports but does not include a device to which Elevating Devices Act applies as per Section 51 of Regulation 851.

Forklift trucks, cranes, hoists, lifts, elevating platforms are some examples of lifting devices. Lifting devices are used in thousands of workplace for many things, from lifting a worker to lowering a load of skids.

Lifting devices can cause serious worker injury and death and therefore it is important that they comply with the legislation that will protect the safety of your employees and your business.


Who Can Perform the Annual Lifting Device Inspection?


The Occupational Health and Safety Act defines a “competent person” as a trained, knowledgeable and experience qualified person.  To thoroughly examine the lifting equipment you must have appropriate practical and theoretical knowledge of the lifting equipment.

The technician must be able to allow objective decisions to be made during the examinations and must notify the customer of any defects in the lifting equipment which in their opinion could become danger to the workers.

The competent person must be familiar with the Act and regulations that apply to the work and has knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace.
